I wouldn't think of prog metal as "stale and dull", but, hey, everyone's entitled to their own opinions - although prog metal is currently going through a dull spot, I guess because of all those simplified deathcore bands. Also, not a big fan of Ulver... :P Arcturus are good, though.

Since I discovered this genre (first listening to Dream Theater), I listen 98% of the time to progmetal and subgenres (like progmetal opera - Ayreon and prog death metal - Opeth). Love this kind of music to the bone.

Progressive DOES NOT mean technical. Progressive Metal can be very technical but the main point of it is that it's more artistic and instead of typical "verse-chorus-verse-chorus" tracks you have long, epic songs with great and meaningful lyrics, fantastic guitar solos etc.
