Also, even if "indie" and "pop" were meant to be taken literally, then it still wouldn't be an oxymoron. Radiohead are technically independant and are still popular, just as many other bands are.

Indie means independent, so out of the big labels. Indie is not a genre. Pop means a music with cacthy tunes..... and other things, its not a musical style, like rock, metal, jazz, electronic music is, its a characteristic that you can apply to various forms of music. There is rock that is pop, there is pop electronic music, there is some punk rock bands that make pop songs, there is pop rap/r&b songs...... So a artist that is from a independent label can make pop songs, many artists do. This is a valid tad, but people are not using in a valid way, some of those artists on those lists are on big labels.

how is indie pop and oxymoron? when you say pop music people automatically think of, i dunno, britney spears, madonna, katty perry, or something like that. thats why you need to say it is indie pop - pop is genre, while indie is label, or "manner" so to speak. and pop doen't mean it is popular. it started as popular music, catchy tunes, and so, but then later as it progressed people noticed that it is all "similar" kind of music - it isn't rock, isn't classical, isn't hip-hop... it is pop music - meaning it has distinctive style, rather that it is popular. same goes fo rindei - first it was only a label, then people realized that all those so-called indie bands had similar style, and then it became a genre - indie. that's what it is - pop style music done indie way, or indie music done pop way, whatever you prefer, but it is not the same as "pop" or "indie".

I always consider 'indie' a sort of way of doing things, if you get me. Its no longer about the labels or the distinct sounds in my opinion but rather people producing interesting, personal and distinctive music. Bands and artists doing things their own ways and not trying to please any label or company in the process just to shift units. Treating music as a form of expression and art instead of a business There is also nothing wrong with pop or popular music. Just because its pop does not mean its the disposable crap we hear on the radio day in day out for about a month before never hearing it again. Just a shame the best bands no longer become the biggest bands like in the past.

How do you define what "popular music" is; all music is popular, and no music is popular. 'Indie', obviously, comes from 'independent', but that is rarely relevant in what we consider 'indie' music (i.e. practically everything) nowadays; it's just a style. In the same way, there isn't really much "blues" in Rhythm & Blues music nowadays, but that's still what it is, because we call it that. Words only have meaning because of how we use them. And I'm aware this is an unnecessary explanation, but anyway...

correction drloaf that's what it used to mean. indie is no longer just a meaning but a meaning and a sound however it generally more a sound as most ppl still label bands such as bloc party as indie. and also because bands such as the wombats, the kooks, death cab for cutie and such are still labelled as indie even thought theyre all massive it more a description of the sound, that was developed by bands liek pavement and built to spill, nowadays. so much stance is just a more poppy version of this sound. btw i love it XD
