I'd definitely say Nirvana's pretty grungy, and even later Soundgarden. Alice in Chains is like some mix of goth rock, doom metal and grunge in my opinion, and Audioslave sucks seven dicks a day.

@ontheupside You're either nuts or too young to know, if you don't think Nirvana is grunge. Do you know what grunge was called before "grunge"? Seattle rock or punk. That was all Nirvana, Gas Huffer, 7 Year Bitch, Mudhoney, Melvins, The Gits. Nirvana's "Nevermind" defined grunge for the mainstream and is one of the few instances MTV didn't fuck up defining a genre.

I'm not a stickler for genres, but this term pisses me off. The popular bands that get lumped with this tag are not even grunge bands. Soundgarden in its early stages fit the bill, but most of the rest simply don't. AIC, Nirvana, Foo Fighters, Audioslave, and The Smashing Pumpkins especially are not 'grunge'. It's a label that got fixed by the popular culture of the time onto big bands that didn't really identify with it. "post-grunge" is even worse. Might as well just call it "nirvana-wannabe"
