Lacrimosa at the top makes the most sense. Evanescence, Within Temptation and all their fans are trying to kill the honest and beautiful side of what this word means.

These genre shoutboxes are an endless source of ENTERTAINMENT! Thank you! ...Also, is it me or did Lacrimosa just kick Evanescence's ass off first place? Someone on the Last.fm team is trying to make some sense of the tag me thinks.

You can't tag something as gothic because actually it's not. Gothic is not a genre, it's a culture, and it's from the deep, The clothes, the music, the lyrics can't tell if something it's gothic. but hey, That's just my opinion, and i don't have nothing against evanescence is in this page

"but they're TOO FAR from the original Post-Punk to be considered goth" Yes, I agree! Because there's a difference between Gothic in general and 'goth' as musical style. Goth is a part of the wider gothic movement. You're to narrow if you define gothic only as 'post-punk'. You are constantly refering to the GOTH label. Gothic is more about (this you can find in the wiki of the gothic rock label) "dealing" with dark themes and intellectual movements such as gothic horror, Romanticism, existential philosophy, and nihilism. Something which most gothic metal bands do too. Yes, bands like Bauhaus, The Mission, Joy Division and SoM started this, but this doesn't mean you should restrict gothic to only dark post-punk music. That's like saying contemporary movies aren't movies because they're not silent and not in black and white ...

@ Spookygirl: "Listen right, the main influences of Gothic Metal are Doom Metal and Death Metal and romantic literature. The main influences of Gothic Rock are Hard Rock and Post-Punk. How is that related?" By the fact that SOME gothic metal bands are ALSO influenced or inspired by gothic rock and dark wave, this can ofc also be from this second wave (some have even confirmed this in interviews!) And ofc the guitars etc are different, else it would be the same genre ... Just check and tell me you don't hear the influences: A very obvious is that deep clear male gothic singing voice (no grunting) Tristania - Angelore at 4:00 Theatre of Tragedy - Aegis cd (sometimes almost dark wave imo) Compare Tiamat - Brighter than the Sun from 00:30) to Sisters of Mery - This Corrosion !!!! And don't forget Lacrimosa, Umbra et Imago, Garden of Delight, NFD, ...

Which later bands?? I mean, I can clearly hear influences from The Sisters of Mercy in Tiamat (check Brighter Than The Sun!!) or even in Beseech. And check Moonspell - Opium and Tristania - Angellore, if you can't hear the similarities to gothic rock, you're plain ignorant. Heck, even bands like Lacrimas Profundere, The 69 Eyes, Garden of Delight make it hard to destinguish wether they are pure gothic rock or gothic metal ( GoD's later work is clearly more gothic metal oriented, but does that make them less gothic than their biggest inspriration, The Fields of the Nephilim?)

Goth =/= Gothic. If you're saying 'the only gothic bands here are The Cure, Dead can Dance, Joy Division', then you're refering to the GOTH label, not Gothic in general. Goth (goth rock, deathrock, dark wave, ...) & REAL gothic metal are part of the gothic subculture (isn't gothic metal basically like gothic rock, but a bit harder? take for example Mourning Sun, the latest album from FOTN) But then again, we do have the pollution of bands like Evanescence, Marylin Manson, Nightwish, HIM, Within Temptation, Epica, ... which are clearly NOT Gothic (metal)

Hahaha I just love how half the bands on here are totally UN-goth. It's a joke, right? The only good bands on here are The Cure, Joy Division, and Dead Can Dance.
