Why is goth such a hard thing for so many to pin down? Depeche Mode aren't goth, but they're certainly closer to it than HIM or Nightwish. Skinny Puppy aren't goth they're industrial, and VNV Nation isn't even industrial they're EBM/futurepop dance music, despite that every other goth listens to them. London After Midnight and Nosferatu are goth, but that doesn't make them good. The fashion element of goth (and especially countless chains like Hot Topic that have appropriated it and sold it right next to skater and neo-punk clothing) is what has caused more confusion than anything else.
