It is not useful at all - "female vocalist" is NOT a kind of music. Björk and Feist only have one thing in common, and that is the fact that they both have a vagina - just like Britney Spears or Leighton Meester, who, by the way, is also being tagged as female vocalist. I am sick to death of trying to listen similar artists to Lily Allen and ending up listening to Peaches, Tina Turner and any other female singer under the sun. I want to listen to similar artists to Lily Allen, not women singing! This tag is messing up the whole fucking lastfm radio, because the Dixie Chicks belong in here, Lily Allen belongs in here, any woman singing belongs in here and that is why it is not useful - the tag won't help you discover new artists similar to Kate Nash, only women who sing. And that is obviously something SO remarkable we have to create a tag, isn't it? Look, a woman who sings!

i never said they had any similarity, they just happen to be of the same gender. but when you look at the list of artists that are most tagged as female vocalists, spears ain't anywhere near the top. any self-respecting music listener wouldn't come to this page and say"gee I like PJ, and Alanis Morissette, maybe i should listen to this britney spears peson" they know what a useless piece of shit her music is. most the of the artists here on this page are of decent quality, something I can't say about spears, Mariah Carey, and Avril Lavigne etc. so i still stand behind my defense of this tag. you can look at any tag on this website and find obvious shit that doesn't really belong there like spears, she's not a female vocalist, she's more of a whore drama queen that can belt out a tune, or at least could, now anything she releases is synthesized shit like that atrocious song "If U Seek Amy"

AEnimia: Britney Spears is a female vocalist too. Yeah, I can see the similarity between PJ Harvey, Britney Spears, and, say, fucking Peaches. Indeed, a very useful tag.

I don't know wtf most of you people are bitching about, the tags on last.fm serve as simple stepping stones so that a person who for example listens to PJ Harvey can find more bands or artists like her. if you were to put pj in a genre(a word you people misrepresent as 'tags)' it would be alternative or some other non-descriptive useless name that only serves to divide bands and their so-called fans and non-fans. tags on lat.fm help others find bands similar to each other in one way or another, something the word genre doesn't do, or at least not very well.

hey kiddies you must not have ever been in the music scene. Female vocalists are rare and kinda deserve a tag. Plus my heart breaks for talented women. So pretend you don't like female singers but you're still seem queer.

Stihdjia, I agree that the difference exists. But why many people use this tag and very few use "male"? A white straight man keeps on being a portait of typical musician. Black vocalists are also different from white (besides such singers as Amy Winehouse or Janis Joplin). But the tag "black" would be considered as absolutely racist.

what is the downside of this tag? this should be an example for everyone. tags don't just have to be genres, be creative with them! it makes it a lot easier to listen to a station without all the songs sounding the same. Ami Os, if you think there isn't a substantial difference between female and male vocalists, you may wanna get your ears checked.

Fucking sexists What about Chinawoman and Amanda Palmer with their unisex voices? there's nothing unique in being a female musician

on the other hand for me it's pretty useless, since the style is to broad musically - only excluding male-vocalists and instrumental bands ~

    abril 2009
  • randName

agreeing with all those that say that there is usually a musical difference btw male and female vocalists - and that people haven't created a male-vocalist tag is an other problem.

    abril 2009
  • TheOnlyRoc

@brainhost: I disagree. Female vocals stand out in a lot of styles of music and are what make them unique. Its not like all female vocals are in pop music. Thats the only problem I have with this is that top artists are mostly pop. The better tags are the ones that are "female fronted ___". It does make a difference.

Adding to that, this shouldn't even be a tag if it doesn't define the style, which it doesn't, and the creator knows it (look at the description).

    abril 2009
  • brainhost

What a dumb tag... So should it be tagged that we have a male or electronic vocalist two? Style is defined by the genre and messages or visions behind the music (even if they're just "to entertain") and not by the gender of the vocalist. The sound of it's voice is important, but not necasserily determined by the gender of the vocalist (see Chiodus).
