There is never a time when I want to exclusively listen to male vocalists. But if I'm in the mood for something pretty then I might want to listen exclusively to female vocalists. Not that male vocalists can't make pretty music, just that I find it more soothing to hear a woman sing. I don't understand why this would be sexist. Tags are there as a radio filter or whatever. Enjoying female singer-songwriters or bands fronted by females isn't sexists by any means. Can someone explain this? People keep throwing that out or say this is a stupid tag but I haven't seen anyone back any of this up.

I think the tag is argued against because tags are used much like genres, "female-vocalist " says nothing about the genre of music. I suppose it's useful if you don't want to listen to guys sing though.

In what way does this tag annoy you? Do you hate it when last.fm recommends you female fronted bands because they are tagged "female vocalists"? It isn't necessarily a wise tag but how should last.fm differentiate between bands with a female or male singer other than with this tag.
