Seems like the word post-cyberpunk is used for fiction with superficial elements of cyberpunk that are not centered around feral egoism and the high tech low life principle. Heroes of such stories can be good and positive and caring, scientists and governments are working to help the poor and starving, and such. It was probably invented to separate the old cyberpunk noir from newer sci-fi-themed fiction for younger and more tender audience who tend to describe anything with cyber- in it as cyberpunk, which makes looking for dark, grimy cyberpunk a lot harder. Oh yeah, and Renaissance (2005) is great.

Cyberpunk to me is a theme rather than a genre; Matrix being a cyberpunk movie and Half Life being a cyberpunk game. Punk in science fiction, and to me cyberpunk tagged music should be electronic with some attitude and/or cyberpunk themed lyrics.

i think genres are important for example when searching new music or if you like some kind of music much more than others and want to concentrate on that. so there's maybe electro-punk and industrial punk... but who cares! genres aren't for exact classification. it's more like question of focus. industrial, electronic and cyber sound different. i think cyber is the most attracting word for me.. but i don't say all cyberpunk is good. actually i don't even no much cyberpunk. i just WANT to know some. I mean... many of cyberpunk artists here seem not to bee cyberpunk for me. they're too lame. listen to some cybergrind :P there's cyberpunk for you people.

"cyberpunk" has that umbrella aspect of "industrial" it seems. general influence, but doesn't say much by itself anymore, except for the original groups/tracks/books/whatever. different things to different people, in the end. Listen to UV - Codebreaker or Dementia (Medicated), for instance - that's what i'd consider stronger modern cyberpunk influence, but equally Gridlock has that undeniably epic cinematic feel, or Daniel Myer of Haujobb's unmistakeable streams of consciousnesses... anyway, yea, the Gibsonian atmosphere description SYN-FIN mentions is more or less what I'd go by, though I don't tag.
