Sanity_Theorist Dezomorphine, you really are a tool to just call Slipknot pop because they have a large fanbase. Frankly I am surprised they became famous at all with their odd mix of styles.

NicholasBellic Alternative is a broad term that i don't like to use. it consists of a large number of subgenres with different elements. the most prominent, commercial, and complained about is nu metal. it has rapping, electronica, and miserably immature lyrics (Limp Bizkit, Slipknot, Korn). it evolved from and dominated the genre rapcore. Industrial metal uses elements of industrial electronic music and synth instruments (White Zombie, Orgy, KMFDM) Heavier grunge and post- hardcore is sometimes lumped in here due to heaviness (Alice in Chains, Helmet, Jesus Lizard) Funk metal is a genre that incorporates groove oriented rhythms, slap bass, and funk drumming (Faith No More, Infectious Grooves, Primus, Clutch [circa 1998-2001]) Groove Metal takes rhythmic inspiration from funk metal, but leaves more metal elements and rejects slap bass and other funk techniques. usually mixed with Punk rock/Thrash Metal (Prong, Pantera)

i think its so difficult to define alternative metal, because its very difficult to define alternative music. What is alternative rock? Pixies and Husker Dü? System of a down and Deftones? Coldplay and Radiohead? Sexpistols and blink-182? Red hot chili peppers? OK, alternative METAL, but i think nu metal is alternative metal too, beacause alternative is all, what is not really "NORMAL".... and to mix rap and rock isn't normal.

the cool part is that nu metal is alternative metal by those very distinctions of influence, so you're only half right. nu metal is alternative metal but alternative metal isn't always nu metal. besides, nu metal is a crappy name. explaining anything about nu metal always sounds like 'new metal' and six times out of ten you just miscommunicated. the alternative metal tag is more useful for those annoying bands.

Alternative Metal isn't nu metal, it came well before that which is why some of the artists are annoying. Helmet, Faith No More, Primus, RATM, Tool, Primus, Mr. Bungle were alternative metal. KoRn were inspired by and started playing in an alternative metal style, but they developed into something different - nu metal, so now every nu metal band gets labelled as alternative metal. SOAD and Deftones are more modern bands often (incorrectly I think) called nu-metal, which do fit into the alternative metal category.
