  • 2008 Favorites

    Nov 19 2009, 22h02 por Pris

In anticipation of the 2009 favorites list... and the decade list, here's a belated 2008 albums list, as I wrote it in december 2008... I'd throw LI Jianhong and Harvey Milk in there now, and maybe move up Departement of Eagles, since it has held up so well throughout 2009.

    1. of Montreal - Skeletal Lamping

Usually during the summer, I get into a particular genre of music, tropicalia, PSF bands, krautrock, but in 2008 all I can remember is just playing this record over and over. This plays like an extended Fodderstompf cry for love, hackin’ and wackin’ and smackin’ all over the place. Now I’m a simple jewelcase man, so I should probably get some sort of award for not having destroyed the completely menacing package it comes in. For heaven’s sake, my poor little heart can’t take this much harassment! “We are champions my friend” kept me in the race, and that’s more than you may expect from some explicit disco madness LP.

    2. Fuck Buttons - Street Horrrsing

I didn’t know it at the time(oh boy, here we go), but this was exactly the album I was looking for. The moment where the sparkly opening gets blown up by guitar and noise is so blissful, you won’t even notice that some 20 minutes in the middle of the album exists in stasis. It’s very soothing, I often put it on as background noise during reading.

    3. The Goslings - Occasion

You’ll see Occasion’s giant brother Grandeur of Hair in the best of the decade list, but this one packs plenty of punch on its own. Completely devastating shoegaze with benefits to properly wake up in the morning. Those drizzly workday mornings where you know exactly what’s going to happen, and it’s a terrifying concept, but you have to go through with it, even though the next morni… Well I mean this is a great album ++ would listen again.

    4. No Age - Nouns

Lingering and pounding shouldn’t work well with each other, but here you go. An outstanding 30 minute blast of songs and sounds that surprisingly doesn’t get old. Teen Creeps is the obvious highlight here, the clearest bash to your head, but would it, and the other rockers, have had the impact they do if they weren’t surrounded by so much haze?

    5. Lindstrøm - Where You Go I Go Too

I’m not sure it’s innovative or original, but Lindstrøm’s lush epic made night drives memorable journeys. Road and dark landscapes, endlessly stretching out… as endless and Holland gets anyway, you can probably reach any place you want to go within two hours. Nonetheless, the first track actually makes you feel you’re headed somewhere, which is an achievement for someone headed nowhere slowly. And I love the corny album cover, I’d smile too if I could grow a nice beard.

    6. Department of Eagles - In Ear Park

So, there’s the terrible band name, and side-project status for this, which didn’t raise expectations very high, but I was blown away, as I like this much more than anything by Grizzly Bear. Rooibos tea used to be the only thing that could tame the savage beast that lurks right beneath the surface of this man who wants everyone to forget his birthday, but secretly hopes for a surpriiiise party. Ah dream on golden boy, and throw on In Ear Park again. Soothing. No one does it like you.

    7. Religious Knives - It's After Dark

This record worked very well on very warm days. Songs lamenting the sun and the affirming the fact that it is indeed hot really make you feel as though the band understands your predicament. At least the opener with its prospect of being in Brooklyn after dark works as a refreshment, in fact it sends shivers up and down my spine.

    8. Deerhunter - Microcastle / Weird Era Cont.

What a disappointment this was at first. Cryptograms was my number one the year before, only for me to hear they ditched whatever made me excited about the band, and proceeded to deliver a really straightforward album with just one clear monster jam. Nothing Ever Happens was really a tease, since it showed that they could make with the rock ‘n roll all nite if they wanted to. I shelved it for months, but when I started listening to Mircocastle again, I loved it. The last four tracks make for one of the best 20 minute sequences of songs ever, much like the second side of Brian Eno’s Before and After Science. Bonus disc is just that, though Operation is worthy of single release.

    9. Wolf Parade - At Mount Zoomer

Spencer Krug is the gift that keeps on giving. There’s so much good music coming from his many projects, and it doesn’t look like the well will run dry anytime soon. I feel people slept on Mount Zoomer, but not arriving in a mountain of praise doesn’t have to be a bad thing, especially for an album with as much false modesty as this. All in a day’s work ‘ey lads? The extended last track pulls it over the horizon into the valley of immortals.

    10. Indian Jewelry - Free Gold

Nice eclectic set of songs collected for posterity here. Opener Swans makes it clear that they’ve been rocking Soundtracks For The Blind a little, but this is not all the way hero worship. Indian Jewelry carve out their own little world where we walk on water, and actually welcome Africa instead of shooing it into some miserable abyss. Shine dazzle dazzle, and dissolve.

    QUESTIONS:

    1. Which song do you prefer, ..1 or ..30?
+ 30. Videotape is a good song but Reckoner is like "cream your pants and then pass out" good.

    2. Have you ever listened to ..12 continuously on repeat?
    + Yes.

    3. What album is ..26 from?
+ "We Were Dead Before The Ship Even Sank". I might've got the wording wrong.

    4. What do you think about the artist who did ..15?
+ They make good happy time music.

    5. Is ..19 one of your favorite songs?
+ It was last year. Now whenever I listen to it, it reminds me of Christmas in Ohio. I think that's what prevents it from continuing to be one of my favorite songs.

    6. Who does ..28 remind you of?
    + Nobody, really.

    7. Does ..20 have better lyrics or music?
+ Lyrics. If that songs doesn't make you want to cry, you are a communist.

    8. Do any of your friends like ..3?
+ Uh, I'm not sure. I'll have to go ask them, because they definitely exist shut up who says they don't.

    9. Is ..23 from a movie soundtrack?
    + Nope don't think so.

    10. Is ..18 overplayed on the radio?
    + Probably not.

    11. What does ..21 remind you of?
    + Mormons. God they're everywhere.

    12. Which do you prefer, ..5 or ..22?
+ Damn that's a hard call. At the moment I'd say 5 but it's close.

    13. What album is ..17 from?
    + Saturdays = Youth.

    14. When did you first hear ..19?
+ Last winter. Right before I went to spend Christmas in Cleveland. Oh that was a jolly time.

    15. What genre is ..8?
    + Indie, I guess.

    16. What is your favourite lyric from ...3?
+ "Used to be one of the rotten ones and I liked you for that"

    17. What colour does ..4 remind you of?
+ Sepia. In a good way.

    18. Have you ever blasted ..11 on your stereo?
+ Hell yes. There's no better way to show people how cool you are than to blast a song that features a guy yelling about placentas and dirty vaginas.

    19. What genre is ..7?
+ I think Sufjan Stevens is his own genre.

    20. Can you play ..13 on any instrument?
+ Definitely. I love to jam out on my cereal box prize kazoo.

    21. What is your favorite lyric from ..30?
+ I'm not sure if that song even has lyrics. Actually that's not true I'm just too lazy to go look up what Thom Yorke is actually saying.

    22. What is your favorite lyric from ..23?
+"As he went home at the end of the day
In this nature show that rages every day
It was then he heard his intuition say
    We were all basically alone
Despite what all his studies had shown
    That what's mistaken for closeness
Is just a case of mitosis"

    23. Would you recommend ..24 to your friends?
    + Yes.

    24. Is ..2 a good song to dance to?

    + Nope.

    26. Is ..22 more of a nighttime or daytime song?
+ Daytime. But only in fall or winter. Otherwise, night.

    27. Does ..16 have any special meaning to you?
+ It's the song I would always put on before I threw up my last meal. Oh, the memories.

    28. Do any of your friends like ..1?
    + Yes.

    29. Is ..25 a fast or slow song?
    + Slow, mostly.

    30. Is ..5 a happy or sad song?
+ Hm. Sort of more on the sad-ish side, I guess? But it makes me happy.

    31. What is one of your favorite lyrics from ..9?
+ "Up up down down left right left right B A start
Just because we use cheats doesn't mean we're not smart"

    32. Is ..14 better to listen to alone or with friends?
+ Alone. In the dark. While drinking profusely.

    33. When did you first hear ..27?
+ Hm I don't know. Whenever the Hissing Fauna album came out.

    34. Name 3 other songs by the artist who did ..29?
+ Sit Down Stand Up, There There, Karma Police

    35. Do you know all the words to ..6?
    + Nope, I don't.

    36. Does ..28 have better lyrics or music?
+ I think they're pretty evenly matched. Maybe slightly favored toward lyrics.

    37. What album is ..10 from?
    + The Lon Gisland EP.

  • A Quick Rundown

    Nov 10 2009, 3h38 por sunburntkamel

Fri 6 Nov – Night Eternal Above America tour

Secrets of the Moon - The reason I was willing to drive to San Antonio - did not disappoint, with their weird discordant atmosphere, and unrelenting, shapeshifting metal.

Divine Heresy - Dino Cezares does not disappoint, those nimble fingers are amazing. It's a shame I hate their songs/singer so much, and that their emotion is such bland testosterone rage.

Moonspell - I wasn't really sure whether I liked moonspell or not. There seem to be wildly varied opinions about them in the metal world at large. I dunno, I guess I have a soft spot for gothy doomy metal that doesn't overdo it. I liked the show a lot.

Sat 7 Nov – Fun Fun Fun Fest 2009

Young Widows - I missed Coliseum, but for as much as I like Coliseum's nuanced songwriting, Young Widows are much more varied, and had really memorable songs. I need to pay them more attention.

Foot Patrol - Silly songs about foot fetishism. You kinda wonder why the singer doesn't sing in a more well known band, though. His range is pretty solid.

Russian Circles - 3rd time's a charm. Finally got to see them, and they didn't disappoint. They led with Harper Lewis and Station, which already made my show.

After that, we skipped to Frank for some dogs and cocktails.

Ssion - for stumbling randomly onto a blue stage show of a band we'd never heard of, they were pretty damn fun. dancy and silly.

Death - Reunion shows of bands that you've never been into are hard to appreciate.

Yeasayer - Really excellent show. I've only flirted with listening to them, mostly on the back of Bat For Lashes' new album. They were definitely one of the better shows of the day, though.

Fucked Up - I ran over for a brief bit, and their show was absolutely as crazy as I'd heard their shows are. Their frontman cracked jokes about anti-anxiety meds and Eyehategod, and there was a ton of crowd surfing and general shirtless chaos.

Shearwater - I love Shearwater, so it was easy to choose to skip the end of Yeasayer to see them(him), but it was kinda the wrong choice. Very odd set, much more noisy than the other 1.2 times I've seen him this year.

Face to Face - lots of crowd heckling, as usual, but they put on a fun show, of what I heard.

Ratatat - long sound check, but sounded good after they got started. Opted to head to Mohawk for the option of sitting down/air conditioning/cheap beer.

Sat 7 Nov – Fun Fun Fun Afterparty

Twin Tigers - Fast and punky, definitely enjoyed their set. Will have to check them out.

The Octopus Project - Oh my god. I'd listened to them a little, but on record they come across much more chilled. The show was really energetic and electro, vs. the weird organic sounds on their albums.

    Voxtrot - lovely as always.

Sat 7 Nov – Fun Fun Fun Fest Day 2

WHY? - The show was good, they played well, and it was a setlist full of songs I like. The rain definitely dampened it, though.

Coalesce - It's hard to say whether the sound peaking and distorting helped or hurt their set. After seeing so many metal shows, I'm used to being blown away by precision, rather than blasted with noise and emotion. With the downpour, though, it was hard to really get into the mood for that sort of chaos.

We took a quick run to Target for ponchos and dry/warm clothes at this point.

HEALTH - Fortunately, the blue stage was running behind, so we walked in just as they were soundchecking. It amazes me that they would use guitars to control the sounds that they produce. I don't know if that's something they do live, or if they actually make the albums that way. Definitely left them room to spazz out and be awesome, though.

Lucero - we found our way to the front-ish during lucero's set, so we could be close for the following shows on the orange stage. I dunno, lucero is ok in small doses - their songs kinda run together even during a short 40 minute set.

Crystal Castles - The shoving and umbrella waving was too much to deal with, so we backed out of the crowd after lucero, and watched CC from farther up the hill. That was definitely the way to do it, their light show is more than their stage presence, they played mostly in darkness, occassionally silhouetted against their lights.

of Montreal - Oh my god, the costumes, the weird videos, the awesome lyrics, the ninja dancers. So much awesome.

Danzig - I had to, just because I probably wouldn't see him any other way, now that his band isn't really a band any more, it's just whoever can put up with him. I caught Twist of Cain, and some glimpses of his skin tight shirt, and called it good.
