So, I decided against going to Otakon this weekend, and instead ended up at Play! A Video Game Symphony. The National Symphony Orchestra was playing, and was conducted by Arnie Roth. Tonight they were preforming at Wolf Trap, right here in Virginia. I love Wolf Trap because it's a sort of indoor/outdoor venue. My mom and I went, and got nice tickets sitting outside on the lawn. TThey had big screens set up so you could see the orchestra, but you could make them out without looking at the screen. During the concert, they would also play videos from the games.

(The order of the songs might be wrong, my memory isn't that great, haha.)
The first half was music from a lot of Square-Enix games. They started out with the Play! Opening Fanfare and then Liberi Fatali from Final Fantasy VIII, both composed by Nobuo Uematsu. The chorus was awesome during Liberi Fatali. Of course, it couldn't be a video game concert without music from super mario bros. (Koji Kondo). They used the screens during this piece to play videos of a bunch of different Mario games, from the NES to the Gamecube. Next was the Suite from Battlefield 1942 by Joel Eriksson. I've never plaed Battlefield, but it was a nice piece. Next, was a piece from Shenmue, which I was surprised to hear. It's one of my favorite games ever, but I didn't think it was really widely known. They played the song Sedge Tree, which is a nice variation on the Shenmue theme. Very nice string solo, too. One of the best pieces of the night was of course Aerith's Theme from Final Fantasy VII. I love the orchestral version of the piece, and the NSO did a great job. After that, was the metal gear solid Main Theme, by Tappy Iwase and Kazuki Muraoka. MGS is another game that I... just haven't gotten around to playing yet. But after hearing the music and seeing the game footage, I think I'll probably be playing it soon. The last song before the intermission was from kingdom hearts. They did a mix of the orchestral versions of Simple and Clean and Sanctuary by Utada Hikaru. That was a real crowd pleaser.

After the intermission, they started out with the Morrowind theme by Jeremy Soule. I love that theme, and I loved hearing it preformed. After that, they played another piece by Jeremy Soule, this time from the new game Prey. It was okay. Then there was the Theme of Laura from Silent Hill 2. (Akira Yamaoka) I haven't played SH either, and the guitarist during this song didn't really impress me. But the next guitarist, for the Chrono Trigger and Chrono Cross piece (Yasunori Mitsuda) made up for it. Then they played a suite from World of Warcraft by Jason Hayes. How could I not like it? The chorus did a nice job with that piece too, especially during the Night Elf theme. After that was Halo. This was what I really was looking forward to. I love the Opening Suite to Halo (Martin O'Donnell andMichael Salvatori). They did a nice job, however... one of the mics was too close to the Bassoon player, so wah wah wah WAAAAAH really stuck out. Yeah. After that was a Zelda suite, which was nice, since it was something my mom recognized too. (Yes, my mom plays video games) Like the Mario theme, they also played footage from various Zelda games. The last song was One Winged Angel from Final Fantasy VII. Man. What an awesome way to end a show. For the encore, they played a new song by Nobuo Uematsu, from a new game called Blue Dragon. Looks like a pretty cute game, and the music was good too. :)

This concert series is touring world-wide, so check and see if they'll be playing near you. It's worth it.
