I also appreciate these categories, which are substantially different:

Carnatic(classical music from the south of India)
Qawwali (classical Sufi-inspired singing from Pakistan & Afghanistan)
South Asian (other non-classical non-pop music from the countries south of the Himlayas)
Asian Underground (south- and central Asian music with an electronic element)

    Also:
bhangra (a type of Pakistani pop music)
bollywood (general South Asian popular soundtrack music)

South Asian classical music can be found in these groups:

    Eastern Invasion
    Indian Classical Music
    Sitar
    South Asian Roots

In my opinion, tags such as "world", "ethnic", and "fusion" are meaningless because they are deeply ethnocentric and they fail to provide any useful differentiatiation.

I'm a pianist, guitarist, and bassist, and maybe when I get around to it a violinist and a percussionist. I like to hear new, strange, unusual music, music with unusual harmonies, scales, and playing techniques. Generally, my tastes run along the general lines of punk and post-punk, melodic metal, surf,alt-rock, post-rock,trip-hop, glitch, free jazz, baroque, classical, post-modern, avant-garde, and video game music. Some specific examples are included below. My ventures into glitch, trip-hop, and free jazz have only recently started and I would appreciate music suggestions along those lines and indeed along any of the other lines I've mentioned. In a later post I will lay out what I listen for in music.

  • Favourite tabla players?

    Mar 16 2007, 23h54 por Eyoki

I was just thinking recently about a conversation i had with a friend some time back. He maintained that although Zakir Hussain might be the greatest tabla virtuoso, Anindo Chatterjee was actually the better musician. He said that when he listened to Zakir Hussain he found himself admiring the man's technique, whereas with Anindo Chatterjee he was just caught up in the music.

I like them both and i'm not a great one for choosing, but if i had to then i think i'd go for another tabla player entirely: Bikram Ghosh, whose solo table album Talking Tabla i have had for years and love.

I've also recently discovered Anuradha Pal. It was quite a revelation to discover a female tabla player could be that good. I don't mean that in a patronising way. It's just that it's such a physically demanding instrument.

It's interesting actually that solo tabla recitals have become so popular. Yet it's true that the tabla remains primarily the great instrument of accompaniment and as such, perhaps my friend's right, because that's where Anindo Chatterjee excels.
