  • Top 200 Songs of the Decade: Part 4

    Dez 15 2009, 19h51 por likecrocodiles

    151. Why? - TocarRubber Traits
I love the subtle stuff going in the background of this song, especially the vocals between 1:00 and 1:30.

    152. Animal Collective - Safer
Animal Collective doesn't make songs this weird anymore, unfortunately. There is so much to love here: the looping piano, the assorted screaming ("I'M ALRIIIIIIGHT!" and "Now don't get too freaky on me!"). Also, my last.fm username comes from this song, so I couldn't not include it.

    153. Joanna Newsom - TocarSawdust & Diamonds
If you've been paying attention you'll notice that every track from Ys is on this list. If I had to get rid of one, I guess it would be this one, but that doesn't mean it's not an incredibly good song. The highlight: "I wasn't born of a whistle or milked from a thistle at twilight. No, I was all horns and thorns, sprung out fully-formed, knock-kneed and upright. So enough of this terror, we deserve to know light and grow evermore lighter and lighter..."

    154. And So I Watch You From Afar - TocarSet Guitars to Kill
Wow, this is the most in-your-face post-rock song of recent times. It will blow you away. I expect more great things to come from these guys.

    155. The White Stripes - Seven Nation Army
Maybe the best bassline of the decade.

    156. The Knife - TocarSilent Shout
This is such a sexy song, especially the synth solo.

    157. Rilo Kiley - Silver Lining
Speaking of sexy, how about that Jenny Lewis's voice?

    158. Clap Your Hands Say Yeah - TocarThe Skin of My Yellow Country Teeth
Alec Ounsworth's voice, not so much. But this is an amazing song.

    159. M83 - TocarSkin Of The Night
This would be a great song to drive around at night to, especially if it's windy.

    160. Bon Iver - Skinny Love
I actually prefer Re: Stacks to this, but they're both really good songs.

    161. Passion Pit - TocarSleepyhead
When the EP came out, I listened to this song nonstop. It's funny how Passion Pit seems to be everywhere now. Manners isn't as good as Chunk of Change, but I'm glad they've gained popularity.

    162. Mew - TocarSnow Brigade
Sweet chorus, even if the lyrics are a bit stalkerish. (Much like Tocar156, actually.)

    163. Final Fantasy - TocarSong Song Song
I can't tell whether that's pizzicato at the beginning (he didn't play this song when I saw him live), but however he does it, it's awesome. Almost as awesome as the ending.

    164. Alcest - Souvenirs d'un autre monde
I think this album is slightly overrated (although the lyrics are uniformly excellent), but this track stands out. Very shoegazey.

    165. Mew - TocarSpecial
This song is like a rocket through me. I don't listen to Mew enough, but every time I do, I'm impressed by them.

    166. Muse - TocarStarlight
I can see how a lot of Muse fans hate this. I don't listen to it much anymore (Origin Of Symmetry is more lasting), but for a time I listened to it incessantly.

    167. Dirty Projectors - Stillness Is the Move
Angel Deradoorian joining Dirty Projectors was the best thing that ever happened to them, as evidenced by Bitte Orca.

    168. Oasis - TocarStop Crying Your Heart Out
Admittedly, Heathen Chemistry is far from the best Oasis album, but this song gets me every time.

    169. Rachael Yamagata - Sunday Afternoon
Not as immediately appealing as the majority of Happenstance, but it really makes use of her smoky vocals, particularly the climax.

    170. Fuck Buttons - Surf Solar
Blistering yet danceable. Fuck Buttons is one of the most original bands out there.

    171. The Decemberists - The Tain (Parts I, II, III, IV, V)
Considering how popular The Decemberists are, you'd think this would be better-known. It's totally epic, even though I can't see much of a connection with the Irish mythological epic it's named after.

    172. Franz Ferdinand - TocarTake Me Out
When I first heard this on the radio, I scrambled to find out who this band was. I suspect I wasn't the only one.

    173. Kaki King - TocarThese Are The Armies Of The Tyrannized
Very Mogwai-ish, which is a good thing.

    174. Los Campesinos! - TocarThis Is How You Spell "HAHAHA, We Destroyed The Hopes And Dreams Of A Generation Of Faux-Romantics"
"We have to take the car 'cause the bike's on fire!"

    175. Final Fantasy - TocarThis Is the Dream of Win & Regine
The way Owen Pallett sings "I tried, and tried, and tried to keep the crowds away" is heart-breakingly plaintive.

    176. Muse - Time Is Running Out
Their danciest song, which sort of foreshadowed the direction they went with Black Holes and Revelations.

    177. MGMT - TocarTime to Pretend
Really, there's nothing I can say that hasn't already been said.

    178. Battles - Tonto
Atlas is the best song from Mirrored, by a long shot, but this is much more complex. The ending is a bit slow, but there's so much going on in the first half.

    179. The Antlers - TocarTwo
I pretty much knew in February that Merriweather Post Pavilion was going to be my favourite album of 2009, but in the race for second place, I didn't expect a band I had never listened to before to win. Hospice is mind-blowingly good, though. Most of the compositions are pretty expansive, but this one's really tight, and it works well.

    180. Grizzly Bear - Two Weeks
The video is a bit creepy (see: the uncanny valley), but I always thought Grizzly Bear was a bit creepy anyway.

    181. Spoon - The Underdog
In the wrong hands, this song could end up being pretty campy, especially the horns, but this is Spoon.

    182. Dirty Projectors - Useful Chamber
I'm glad Dirty Projectors haven't lost ALL their wacky experimentalism.

    183. The Mars Volta - Viscera Eyes
I wish you could love a song more than once on last.fm.

    184. The Antlers - TocarWake
One of the expansive compositions from Hospice. Highlights: "letting people iiiiiiiiin," the "don't be scared to speak..." section, and of course the ending.

    185. Animal Collective - Water Curses
Where to start? First of all, this is one of the best EPs I've ever heard. It's got three really strong tracks, and Seal Eyeing isn't bad either. But this track stands out. It's incredibly joyful (I mean, it has the lyric "I want to be like water and slip into your throat and make you feel alive and good"), and there's so much good stuff going on - the jagged synthesizer (or whatever it is) in the background during the "I don't think you know just what you're doing" section drives me crazy. It's really too bad that it would be pretty much impossible to play live.

    186. Rachel's - Water From the Same Source
This song was used in the movie Hancock, for some reason. I didn't complain, though.

    187. Yndi Halda - TocarWe Flood Empty Lakes
It's no TocarIlluminate My Heart, My Darling!, but still awesome. A one-minute condensed version of this song was used in an ad for Fuel TV, and it wasn't half bad, despite being 11 minutes shorter than the original.

    188. Coheed and Cambria - TocarWelcome Home
    Some seriously awesome solos.

    189. Dan Deacon - TocarWham City
The a cappella recapitulation of the chorus near the end never fails to bring a smile to my face. The beginning is kind of reminiscent of TocarIn C.

    190. Stars - TocarWhat I'm Trying to Say
Ultra-catchy, and the lyrics are based on a fairly original conceit, which is rare for a love song.

    191. 65daysofstatic - TocarWhen We Were Younger & Better
This should be a movie soundtrack.

    192. Dido - TocarWhite Flag
Dido has about three good songs, and one incredible song (this one, naturally).

    193. Fleet Foxes - White Winter Hymnal
Such harmonies! I try not to think about the lyrics when I listen to this song though, because they're so depressing and the music is so calming.

    194. Rachael Yamagata - TocarWorn Me Down
Rachael Yamagata basically doesn't have any songs I really dislike, because her voice is so good, but this is her best.

    195. Los Campesinos! - TocarYou! Me! Dancing!
Wow, so twee. I love the spoken-word bit at the end: "And we're all like how Rousseau depicts man in the state of nature: we're undeveloped, we're ignorant, we're stupid, but we're happy").

    196. Stars - TocarYour Ex-Lover Is Dead
"And all of the time you thought I was sad, I was trying to remember your name."

    197.MGMT - TocarThe Youth
This track kind of got overlooked with the popularity of TocarKids and TocarTime to Pretend, but it's my favourite song from the album. The chorus makes it a perfect youth anthem.

    198. Feist - 1234
It must suck for Sally Seltmann, who basically wrote this song, to see how popular Feist has become because of it. I'm just glad it exists, though.

    199. Mew - Tocar156
My favourite Mew song. "Don't you just love goodbyes?"

    200. Yeasayer - 2080
This must be the best Middle Eastern-psych-snap-gospel song I've ever heard!

  • Top 200 Songs of the Decade: Part 2

    Dez 14 2009, 3h16 por likecrocodiles

    51. Gang Gang Dance - First Communion
First of all, Liz Bougatsos has an impossibly cool voice. Second of all, this song is impossibly awesome.

    52. Morrissey - TocarFirst of the Gang to Die
Proof that Morrissey's still got major songwriting chops.

    53. Coldplay - TocarFix You
Frankly, I wouldn't want my bones to be ignited, even by Chris Martin, but this song is still a great anthem.

    54. Sigur Rós - Fljótavík
I like to sing along to this song as a sort of release for all the emotion in it, but just as it reaches its peak, it switches into Hopelandic so I can't sing along, and the emotions just build up. It's rather powerful.

    55. Okkervil River - TocarFor Real
Wow, this is a dynamic song. Highlights are the punchy guitar bits that start about :40 in and Will Sheff singing "You caaaaan't hide..."

    56. Animal Collective - For Reverend Green
Avey Tare's vocals on this song are incredible.

    57. Antony and the Johnsons - For Today I Am a Boy
Even if you're not a wannabe transsexual, you can't help but identify with Antony Hegarty here, because this song is just so stunning.

    58. Mates of State - Get Better
Frankly, I'm mystified as to why Re-Arrange Us got panned by the critics. Every track is a gem of a pop song, and this is the best of them.

    59. Sigur Rós - Gobbledigook
This sounds like Sigur Rós covering Animal Collective. Also, the video is brilliant. This song is perfect to run around naked to (I assume...).

    60. Panda Bear - TocarGood Girl/Carrots
If this song was a food, I bet it would be something tasty.

    61. Wolf Parade - TocarGrounds for Divorce
Part of the trifecta of great 4-minute songs from Apologies to the Queen Mary, along with TocarI'll Believe in Anything and TocarDear Sons and Daughters of Hungry Ghosts. This is the most joyful of them.

    62. TV on the Radio - TocarHalfway Home
I don't know what makes this song so great, but it is. Must be the handclaps.

    63. Daft Punk - TocarHarder, Better, Faster, Stronger
No list would be complete without this song. Somehow, they manage to make one of the catchiest songs ever out of one of the most unmelodious melodies ever.

    64. Thom Yorke - Harrowdown Hill
Brilliant piano, haunting vocals. Yorke's solo work is peculiarly neglected, considering how huge Radiohead is.

    65. Maybeshewill - TocarHe Films The Clouds, Pt. 2
Gotta love when instrumental post-rock bands randomly sing on one track. The vocals complement the piano line in the second half beautifully.

    66. Frightened Rabbit - TocarHead Rolls Off
The most cheerful song about mortality I've heard. "It's not morbid at all, just when nature's had enough of you."

    67. !!! - Heart of Hearts
    Dance-punk at its best.

    68. of Montreal - Heimdalsgate Like a Promethean Curse
Depressing lyrics and happy music: a winning combination.

    69. Andrew Bird - TocarHeretics
Whatever Andrew Bird has for breakfast, I want some.

    70. OutKast - TocarHey Ya!
Hey, a token hip-hop song! But this is too good not to include. Hell, it was even on Rolling Stone's list of the 500 greatest songs of all time.

    71. Imogen Heap - TocarHide and Seek
"Mm, what'd you say? Mm, that you only meant well? Well of course you did." Somehow the harmonizer makes the lyrics better.

    72. Antony and the Johnsons - Hope There's Someone
The beginning is good, but it's the coda that really makes this song.

    73. Sigur Rós - Hoppípolla
    Whoa.

    74. Radiohead - TocarHow To Disappear Completely
There's a moment near the end of this song where the swirling dissonance fades away and Thom Yorke's vocals can be heard as clear as crystal. It's spine-tingling.

    75. The Fray - TocarHow To Save A Life
See, I listen to radio music too!

    76. Wolf Parade - TocarI'll Believe in Anything
Probably the best song Spencer Krug has ever written, which is saying a lot.

    77. Yndi Halda - TocarIlluminate My Heart, My Darling!
I listen to a lot of post-rock, and this song is by a large margin the best post-rock song I've ever heard. If you haven't heard it, go out and get a copy right now.

    78. Sigur Rós - Inní mér syngur vitleysingur
    Soooo happy.

    79. Arcade Fire - Intervention
The organ might be overdoing it a bit, but this is still a great track.

    80. The Decemberists - TocarThe Island
The Decemberists + proggy synth runs = awesomeness

    81. Broken Social Scene - TocarIt's All Gonna Break
The way Kevin Drew sings "it's all gonna break!" on this track is so great. Almost as great as the trumpet outro.

    82. MGMT - TocarKids
Oracular Spectacular wasn't a great album, but it had a few great songs, this one among them.

    83. Wolf Parade - Kissing the Beehive
    Damn, this is epic.

    84. Grizzly Bear - Knife
It's really hard to pin down what's so appealing about this song. It's something about the atmosphere.

    85. La Oreja de Van Gogh - TocarLa Playa
I guess this should be alphabetized under P, really. When Amaia Montero sings "Te voy a escribir la canción más bonita del mundo," I have a feeling she's referring to this song.

    86. Shakira - TocarLa Tortura
Shakira has a knack for dramatic male-female duets (see also: TocarHips Don't Lie).

    87. The Strokes - TocarLast Nite
A damn good song, if you ask me!

    88. The Wombats - Let's Dance To Joy Division
The lyrics of this song are priceless: "So let the love tear us apart, I found the cure for a broken heart."

    89. The New Pornographers - Letter From an Occupant
There's enough material in this song to make three or four good songs, I think.

    90. Radiohead - TocarLife In A Glasshouse
This is rather jazzy and unlike anything else Radiohead's recorded, but still wonderful, especially the way Thom Yorke sings "Only, only, only..."

    91. Radiohead - TocarLike Spinning Plates
The backing track on this song is amazing.

    92. Phoenix - TocarLisztomania
The best pop song of 2009, in my reckoning.

    93. Biffy Clyro - Living Is A Problem Because Everything Dies
A lot of people hate the intro, but I think it sets the song up nicely. The choral vocals are a nice touch too.

    94. Okkervil River - Lost Coastlines
One of those songs that's impossible not to sing along to, especially when it gets to the "La la, la la la la..." section.

    95. Holy Fuck - Lovely Allen
    Holy fuck!

    96. Vetiver - TocarLuna Sea
A very underappreciated track, one of the most tuneful songs out there.

    97. Belinda - TocarLuz Sin Gravedad
I don't know how the video is supposed to relate to the lyrics, but whatever. Belinda really deserves to be better known outside of Mexico.

    98. The Mars Volta - TocarL'Via L'Viaquez
The part starting with "Sólo tengo una hora..." is really intense.

    99. Patrick Wolf - TocarThe Magic Position
This song puts me in the magic position, whatever that means.

    100. Final Fantasy - TocarMany Lives -> 49 MP
According to the shoutbox for this song, it's "One of the best songs ever fucking created, fucking ever." I'm inclined to agree.

  • New free Instrumental Math/Post-Rock album download release on Lost Children

    Dez 13 2009, 15h16 por LossofaChild

Loss of a Child - Carry Me Home
    Archive.org download
    Torrent download

'Carry Me Home' is the 5th Loss of a Child release and is their most expansive yet, a deeply layered album with flowing and interwoven melodies; contrasting instruments supporting, offsetting, and harmonising with each other and mixed for each to be heard though not necessarily under every listening environment, and certainly not on first listen; experimental through its strict structure and detailed song writing as opposed to the freedom and improvisation of many instrumental acts.

Complex instrumentation hidden beneath simple ideas, dynamism created within the melodies in addition to volume, and the standard multi-instrumental Loss of a Child approach providing many hidden melodic passages requiring repeat listening to find and understand, but each proving that the obvious is not necessarily the best when it comes to musical depth.

There is a FLAC version of ‘Hundred Million Angels’ available for those audiophiles who appreciate the dynamic range of music. Download from here : Carry Me Home FLAC version (be patient, large file size).

There are also alternate versions of the songs available, with varous instruments removed from the mixes so as to hear things you may not immediately hear in the main mix but may appreciate on further listens after you know the sounds are there.

Download from here : Carry Me Home Alternate Versions.

Artwork was designed and produced by Helen Rogers. She can be contacted at hlsrogers @ googlemail.com.

Painting by Numbers - Live Demo

It's always easier to form a band when it's not your first. Painting By Numbers has been a recurring project in the head of its architects long before it actually took shape in autumn 2008.

Antoine Ollivier (Dawnshape) and Gregory Hoepffner (Radius System, Time to Burn, Template) always felt their belonging groups didn't let them experiment as much as they wanted. Soon joined by bandmate Axel Dallou (Radius System), the trio didn't ask too many questions and quickly started making noise, in a language they didn't even speak : improvisation.

Drums, Guitar, Bass, Synth, Samplers, and endless possibilities : Painting By Numbers are devoted to pushing the standards further, fight against their own musical habits, and try to find the right balance between sonic experimentation and pure groove pleasure.

In result of this first year of endless recordings, the parisian trio will is now releasing this "Live Demo", available for free download

It's been a while, but good things come to those who wait. Hailing from opposite ends of Australia, Perth's Tangled Thoughts of Leaving and Sydney's sleepmakeswaves are proud to present you with a shiny new split LP. It's a record from two bands that are very different yet one that finds an equilibrium between the seemingly disparate tendencies of the two groups. Although both bands find common ground in their latent electronic influences, sleepmakeswaves marry these ideas to their characteristic brand of energetic and uplifting instrumental rock while Tangled Thoughts of Leaving pursue a relentlessly improvisatory, innovative path. The results are more foreboding yet no less spectacular, and are all the more reason to watch for their debut full lengths, slated for 2010.

    Tracklisting :

    1. Sleepmakeswaves - Keep Your Splendid Silent Sun
    2. Sleepmakeswaves - We Sing The Body Electric
    3. Sleepmakeswaves - This Is How We Remember (Secret Robot)
    4. Tangled Thoughts of Leaving - A Vexing Predicament
    5. Tangled Thoughts of Leaving - The World Is A Deaf Machine

  • Discoveries (volume V)

    Nov 21 2009, 11h40 por boredmx

    Hi, you non-existent readers!

I have some new - or not so new - music to share with you today on my fifth volume of Discoveries, or should I call it pseudo-re-discoveries this time. Anyway.

    1. The Fallen Host by Blueneck.

This album caught my eye when they used the magic word post-rock in their self-definition album review, sort of. Overall, the album has a very artistic feel, Blueneck are trying to step beyond the boundaries of general rock and experimental music, and succeeds thoroughly - especially with their absolutely stunning track TocarLow, which soon became "the best song I've found this week". It's breathtaking, the simplicity of the song is overthrown by pure emotion. You have got to hear that :-) The other songs are also really good, the album itself follows same melody line/scheme, which is ear-pleasing.

    2. oh, the artists Do Make Say Think and their The Other Truths.

You know you're hearing some really artistic people colliding their musical thoughts and ideas together with that sweet semi-acoustic sound. Yes, I loved You, You're A History In Rust, talk about TocarThe Universe!, jesus, but I find this album a bit better, just because they lost the summer-folk-singing parts, what's left is emotional collision of artistic measures.

    3. Foreword.

Oh, the grace of this mystical band, which released the really beautiful Pneuma with epic tracks like Tocar8105, with the mix of somewhat angsty emo singing and post-rockish song writing. Well now, in this EP, band steps up, and lets themselves more the post-rock approach (longer songs, various breakdowns, etc) and the only song with normal fully sung lyrics is TocarLights & Shapes (which is really moving). Four blissful songs.

    4. the supertalented Oceansize with Home & Minor EP.

Since I am a fan of everything this band released, I was really looking forward to hearing this EP, and it really did pay off - this EP shines with beauty like we once consumed Music for a Nurse with such grace and creativity. The only con of this album, in my opinion, is the second track, which after first two-three listens seemed just too confusing, too arythmic. But overall, this is a superb listen.

    5. The under-appreciated Siegfried: An Original Score.

Those self-contained repetitive chords and motives with a closed interpretation of the movie (which I honestly dislike, I thought there were a lot of better silent movies to write this kind of soundtrack) forms up a two-cd story-like album. I really love how sometimes this album seems a little out of place, deconstructed, not fully connected together, but this disconnection creates an unexpected variety of musical expressions. You have got to love these - even though quite simple - yet beautiful soundscapes.

    6. The Ascent of Everest.

Yes, I know many fans of Godspeed You! Black Emperor are throwing garbage at this band, as if this band tried to rip off the essence of GY!BE. But after some five listens of their album How Lonely Sits the City I think otherwise - yes, maybe this band is heavily influenced and does not hide the affect of those influences, but really - this is some really creative and beautiful stuff. To me this seems like second coming of Yndi Halda (okay, maybe not as creative or fully charged), but less chaotic like ASMZ and GY!BE. Major standout - TocarIf I Could Move Mountains (I) Majesty and Awe (II) Collapse into Understanding (III) Gathered Hearts Rise and Sing at the First Breath of Dawn (okay, the title IS a bit of a rip off.. you know, moving mountains with dawns and gathered sattleti.. uh, oh, hearts).

    7. The Twilight Sad

Boy oh boy, such energy, such vitality in a band. Somewhat "usual" song structures yet again unexpected sound and creative measures. It took me some time to get acquainted with the singers accent, but then again after some time the accent seemed not only fitting, but essential to the music, like a variety of vocals in this music overall. Then again, the guitars and drums creates a beautiful wall of somewhat noisy yet melodic rock - the only definition I find is shoegaze, but of course, modern, updated, accommodated. Please try and find Fourteen Autumns And Fifteen Winters, you will not be disappointed.

    8. This Is Your Captain Speaking.

The album of this band was laid to rest for about a year in my collection, until one day I gave it hope, because I did somewhat knew the album held great essence. Well, the updated listen gave me pleasurable experience, therefore I thought it would be a honorable mention in these journals.

    9. Rediscoveries:

Rediscovery of Yndi Halda. I love their sound, creativity, art forms. I am anxious about their new album which should be coming out.. next year? Really excited.

Rediscovery of Hammock. Yes, I do usually listen to some of their songs, but some time gave me a different perspective towards their more ambient songs/sounds (before I usually listened to songs like TocarLosing You to You (which is, we all know, incredibly nice, I am looking for more tracks with this fresh-winter-christmas-sound)). I guess with time you appreciate the goodness differently.

Rediscovery of my nu-metal era (Deftones, Glassjaw, Far) band, Major Label. Even though in my opinion the band went shitty with their first album, what I love about these guys is their demo tapes. I had incredible chills when listening to Always (k)new which I last did listen about three years ago. Incredible emotion, resembling to the infinite goodness of Main.In.Vine.

    So much this time..
p.s. I'm not sure if you know, my non-existent readers. ASMZ are having their next album february 2010. How awesome is that?
