Wynton Learson Marsalis (b. October 18, 1961) is an American trumpeter and composer. He is among the most prominent jazz musicians of the modern era and is also a well-known instrumentalist in classical music. He is also the Musical Director of Jazz at Lincoln Center. A compilation of his series of inspirational letters to a young jazz musical student, named Anthony, has been published as To a Young Jazz Musician.
Marsalis has made his reputation with a combination of skill in jazz performance and composition, a sophisticated yet earthy and hip personal style, an impressive knowledge of jazz and jazz history, and skill as a virtuoso classical trumpeter. As of 2006, he has made sixteen classical and more than thirty jazz recordings, has been awarded nine Grammys between the genres, and has been awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Music, the first time it has been awarded for a jazz recording.

I've been repeating myself. Thanks to the comments on my earlier shout along these lines. My ambivalence just hasn't gone away. (I do accept that he's been a great proselytiser for jazz).

Does Wynton ever really let his hair down? So much of his work sounds emotionally dry, despite the great technique. Is Cherokee the closest he comes to out and out excitement?

You just need to listen to all the places he's been- all the folks he's paid attention to. Pops is my link- listen for a little Louis, maybe you'll get it. At any rate, he's a nice young man... .

@LondonLouis: For me it's about the right scenario to listen to it, rather than than the right mind-set. His music is less conventionally 'tuneful' than Miles' (I think) so it's less accessable, but once you get inside it you get that click. I think you just need to persevere and give him a listen once in a while in different places or at different times. For me it was headphones in an empty airport, half way round the world at 2am-ish after a long time with no sleep :) Good luck.

Why do I have difficulty warming to Wynton? I know that he's technically excellent. I also know he's a great supporter of everything to do with jazz. But, I will listen to Miles, and I will nearly always be interested. However, if I then find myself listening to Wynton, I just seem to miss that final emotional click. Obviously, I could be just listening to the wrong tracks. So, a question to you fans: if a Miles lover is coming over to Wynto, what album or, even, tracks would you suggest he listens to? (I genuinely want to warm to Wynton).
