Greetings one and all and welcome to my first recommendation journal! Got a bit bored so I thought I'd write down the ten (or so) albums that I've really enjoyed listening to over the past six months (for those who don't know me I've been off work for six months with a long-term illness so I've had a lot of time to listen to and discover new music!).
Not all of these albums are 'new', just albums that I have discovered and enjoyed lately. I'll also try and give some of my own brief thoughts concerning each band and album but don't expect technical musical terms as I don't have a clue about em! Anyway, without further ado and in no particular order... Mike recommends...

Crom – Vengeance (2008)

German Viking metal in the style of Bathory's Nordland-era albums. Incorporates primarily clean vocals with the occasional background growl and both electric and acoustic guitars. Only one bad track on this album 'A Life Unbearable' which I think wouldn't be out of place on a HIM album. Everything else is top class. Definitely my favourite Viking Metal album for a long time!

Theatres des Vampires – Suicide Vampire (2002)

Italian 'Vampire Metal' with strong symphonic black leanings. To me this album sort of bridges the gap between the almost pure Symphonic Black Metal of the early albums and the more electronic Gothic later albums. Includes some of, in my opinion, TdV's best songs, such as La Macabre Danse du Vampire and Tenebra Dentro. These guys were the first Vampire-themed band I got into since Siebenbürgen and are definitely top draw blood suckers!

Imperial Crystalline Entombment – Apocalyptic End In White (2005)

Not usually into US Black Metal if I'm honest. They always seem to give the impression that they're trying too hard or just make shitty music. Not so with ICE. These guys take the OTT grim and frostbitten theme of Immortal and meld it with the savagery and brutality of 'Panzer Division Marduk'. Not only is this the best US black metal I've ever heard, its also the best Black Metal I've heard from ANY country in over a year...and that includes Norway.

Silverlane – my inner Demon (2009)

German melodic power metal band which includes Subway to Sally drummer Michael Simon (and his very attractive sister). Whilst the first album, Legend of Safar, was good power metal it still wasn't anything particularly special. Not so with My Inner Demon which, in my opinion, once again raises the bar for melodic power metal. The whole album is thoroughly enjoyable from beginning to end with catchy melodies, chunky riffs and furious drumming combined with Ecki Singer's high-pitched but not overly camp vocals.

7 Seals – Moribund – Every Kingdom Has to Pass (2008)

Folk/Power Metal from Germany in the vein of Falconer. This is, I believe, a concept album about the Niebelungen (sp?). I was blown away when I first heard this album. From the opening track it is almost impossible not to listen to it all the way through, especially when the band is joined by Sabrina Grochocki (of Stormgarde) who manages to lift the music to another level.

Magica – Lightseeker (2004)

The second full-length album from the Romanian Power Metal band that features ex-member of Interitus Dei. Lightseeker carries on in the direction set down in the first album, Scroll of Stone, in trying to meld pure, inspiring and catchy symphonic power metal with the classical female vocals of the lovely Ana Mladinovici. The production is much better on this album and it is a brilliant listen from start to finish. Comparison with Nightwish are inevitable, of course, but if you leave your prejudices at the door you should find a really enjoyable album which I think is the Romanian sextet's best to date.

Subway to Sally – Herzblut (2006)

I've really gotten into all this 'Medieval Metal' stuff that seems to be so popular in Germany. This album by veterans of the scene, Subway to Sally, is probably my favourite so far. Includes some great tracks, including Wenn Engel Hassen, Kleid Aus Rosen and my favourite, So Rot. Normally I'm not a fan of unplugged songs but the acoustic version of Kleid Aus Rosen is also fantastic. A great album to listen to whatever your mood.

Crystal Viper – Metal Nation (2009)

Polish classic/power metal outfit Crystal Viper give us this, their third release. This 2009 album is head and shoulders above their previous releases in terms of quality and has some great tracks, including the title track and Gladiator, By the Blade. The vocals of singer Marta Gabriel show that women can sing proper metal, not just operatic stuff!

Within Temptation – The Heart of Everything (2007)

To indulging my newfound love of 'woman metal' I had to include this album. It took me ages to get around to listening to the Netherland's Within Temptation after hearing many unfortunate comments about them being similar to Evanescence. I'm happy to report that this album is actually awesome with only one song (What Have you Done feat. Keith Caputo) bearing any resemblance to that overrated yank band's shocking work. Skip that one, however, and you're left with a pretty sensational album with some great vocal work from the brilliant (and stunning *ahem*) Sharon Den Adel. Favourite song would have to be Our Solemn Hour.

Destroy Destroy Destroy – Devour The Power (2006)

This is the first album from this US band. They bear a lot of resemblance musically to Children of Bodom and other bands of that ilk (but fortunately without the vulgar, effeminate, make-up wearing singer) and with an ancient warrior theme more befitting the likes of Ensiferum and Equilibrium. Don't expect anything particularly ground-breaking from this band, just expect some ball-to-the-wall headbanging metal and a friggin' good time!
