Though the longer, droning tracks on Pink Flag are vitally important, most people's descriptions of the album never even mention them--which is odd partly because they constitute nearly half the album's runtime, and partly because they're blueprints for Wire's next two albums. First, these longer tracks offer up the flipside of the shorter tracks. Both kinds of tracks experiment with punk's conventions by altering song length--the fragments by compressing three-chord punk blur into about a minute, the longer, droning tracks by drawing out the elements of punk and displaying the results. Second, these tracks act as soundscapes that create an environment in which the song fragments exist. Third, and most importantly, they're buffers between the shorter tracks. Too many fragments in a row would rob each track of its individual character, so that the album would sound like one long punk song. Tracks like this ensure that doesn't happen: they allow individual songs to stand out.
