1 Antony and the Johnsons - The Crying Light
    (2009)
The black-and-white image of legendary Butoh dancer Kazuo Ohno that adorns the cover of The Crying Light, the third full-length by Antony and the Johnsons, seems to offer a view of a being enveloped in both ecstasy and agony -- or does it? The songs contained here offer something else: a glimpse of a universe beyond the pale of vision, seen only by the individual experiencing it. Neo-classical underpinnings are entwined lovingly with broken pop songs and secretive after-hours cabaret poems. Check the opener, "Her Eyes Are Underneath the Ground". The piano and cello fall together as one slow dancer, alone in the spotlight, keeping memory as time: "In the garden, with my mother/I stole a flower/With my mother, in her power/I chose a flower/I saw six eyes glistening in my womb/I felt you calling me in the gloom/Rest assured your love is pure.... …
  • Will Oldham - New Partner

    Jul 16 2014, 11h53 por walker84

There's a black tinted sunset with the prettiest of skies
Lay back, lay back, rest your head on my thighs
There is some awful action that just breathes from my hand
Just breaths from a deed so exquisetly grand

And you are always on my mind x4

Well, I would not have moved if I knew you were here
Its some special action with motives unclear
Now you'll haunt me, you'll haunt me
Till I've paid for what I've done
It's a payment which precludes the having of fun

And you are always on mind x4
But hello, I've got a new partner riding with me
I'v got a new partner, hello

Now the sun's fading faster, we're ready to go
There's a skirt in the bedroom that's pleasantly low
And the loons on the moor, the fish in the flow
And my friends, my friends still will whisper hello
We all know what we know, it's a hard swath to mow
When you think like a hermit you forget what you know

And you are always on my mind x4
I've got a new partner, riding with me x3

Three songs. That's it. Three songs. No hyperbole contained within; you NEED this record. Bonny Billie, Billy Bon-Bon, Bonnie Billy-Willy, or Will Oldham if you prefer, already released a album less than six months ago, the tepid Wolfroy Goes To Town, and by his prolific nature, we knew he wouldn't be gone too long. He has ANOTHER 10" planned for Record Store Day, several collaborative EPs/singles out in the past month, and MANY compilation appearances scheduled before the end of the year. ...and with his track-record, we know that they will be worth hearing. These three songs do EXACTLY what the majority of Wolfroy didn't; in that they are driving, catchy, funny and somber simultaneously, and feature beautiful melodies and lyrics. …

Fri 24 Feb – Bonnie 'Prince' Billy featuring the Cairo Gang

Seeing an artist live for the first time holds expectations of exactly how they will perform. The persona that you craft in your mind of the performer is nuanced by the way they commit themselves to record. The image is shaped and honed by years of repeat listening intermingled with personal experience and interpretation and whilst it's perhaps trite to extrapolate a whole personality from a single moment, or moments, recorded in time, it so often hits the mark. Shy, withdrawn artists are invariably shy and withdrawn, softly spoken bands with lilting arrangements fill a room, but don't blow you away. Loud, brash frontmen are generally charismatic and everywhere at once.

On occasion, though, that image you've formed is completely shattered by the enigmatic presence that arrives on stage. On this cool, blustery summer's night in Perth, that presence was Will Oldham, in this guise as Bonnie 'Prince' Billy with The Cairo Gang. …

  • My albums of the decade 2000-2009

    1) Bob Dylan - Love and Theft - not just a decent-if-overrated comeback album like Time Out of Mind, but a fullblown Dylan masterpiece, marking the start of a decade where he’s gone from forgotten oldie that the others at high school teased me for liking, back to his accustomed role at the head of the table. I’ll let this album stand for all the interesting-new-albums-by-oldies this decade, such as Lou Reed’s The Raven, John Cale’s Hobosapiens, Johnny Cash’s Unearthed, Nick Cave’s Abattoir Blues etc.

    2) Byungki Hwang – Gayageum Masterpieces vols 1-5 – music must be an obscure subgenre of world music to most kiwis, but as I lived in Korea for over a year it’s become something quite familiar to me. The gayageum is a zither instrument, equivalent to the Chinese zheng or Japanese koto, and Byungki Hwang uses it to conjure an endlessly listenable array of moods, sounds and styles.

    3) Vang Trang Tjeng Dang – The Moon and the Sound of Folk Instruments – I bought this album in Hanoi…

    20. Alice in Chains - Black Gives Way to Blue

This was a great comeback. And I didn't expect it to be. They manage to capture the emotion of the old band without trying to sound like the old band. Credit goes to Jerry Cantrell for managing to pull this all together without embarrassing themselves. Hopefully they are able to follow this up with an album just as good, and I hope it doesn't take another fifteen years to do it.

    19. John Vanderslice - Romanian Names

John is always reliable. I enjoy every single one of his albums, and this is no exception. Songs like "Tremble and Tear" "Fetal Horses" and "D.I.A.L.O." are among some of my favourite John Vanderslice songs ever. The songs range from great to average, but there isn't really a stinker in the bunch. What I really love about this album is the production. It's just to easy to listen to, and the use of synths is great. Really good and understated album.
