Absence. I'd been gone too long, and I put out a notice revelations, alterations, all's love, and all's electro in the club (set in 5 min) to see if anyone would come. I had a nice response and there was indeed a lot of charmed words for what I put down.

I had a request for NWA, and my nonplussed reply was all I had onhand was Whodini and Newcleus and I didn't know if that was a consolation... they obliged me by saying they'd love to hear Whodini so I threw it in and I love the funky passage from there to Artefact. The end was also very satisfying. If I'd throw anything out, "Da Funk" was too stale, and "Gate 23" was a really awful choice (my fault for not monitoring beforehand).

The site of mixes over at DeepSoul3.com have always been a great source of music. Chris Edwards & Matt Mollicone have curated some incredible sets on there of cross-genre, balearic and cosmic disco styles.. open minds and deep crates, ripping up boundaries and laying down moods.

Late 70’s – I really couldn’t remember much other than I was strangely fascinated by KISS, but the 1st song I can recall being played was “We Are Family” by Sister Sledge.

1980 to 1986 – For most of the 80’s I was heavily influenced by the radio. Some of my fondest memories was “Rock Me Amadeus” by Falco, “Relax” Frankie Goes to Hollywood, “West Side Girls” by the Pet Shop Boys, and basically anything that Prince did including his work with Chaka Khan. I also got my first taste of early hip-hop with groups like Cameo and Whodini.

1987 to 1988 – I discovered pop/glam metal bands such as Poison, Aerosmith, Bon Jovi, Cinderella, Def Leppard, and Guns N Roses. I also started to take notice of artists like Metallica, Beastie Boys, and L.L. Cool J.

1989 to 1990 – “Yo! MTV Raps” debuted in ’88 and I quickly became addicted. At this time I was mainly listening to Public Enemy, Slick Rick, Queen Latifah, De La Soul, A Tribe Called Quest, and KRS-1.

1991 to 1993 – Hip-hop quickly turned more violent, but I continued listening. I started listening to N.W.A., Ice Cube, Spice-1, Compton’s Most Wanted, DJ Quik, and The geto boys. Around this time, I also started to listen to some of the R&B of the time. So I listened to groups like Jodeci, Silk, Troop, and Mary J. Blige. This was the first time in my life that I didn’t rely on the radio or television to guide my listening habits.

1994 to 1996 – This is where my musical tastes get convoluted. Tired of the violence of underground hip-hop and the rise of commercial rap, I decided to broaden my musical horizons once again. Influenced by a few friends, I started getting in the alternative rock (Stone Temple Pilots, Soundgarden, Pearl Jam, Temple of the Dog, The Flaming Lips, Alice in Chains, Smashing Pumpkins, and Bush) that was very successful over the last few years. A friend let me borrow of Nirvana’s In Utero and I became hooked immediately. I quickly bought everything Nirvana from Bleach to Incesticide. The more I learned about Nirvana the more I learned about indie bands like The Meat Puppets, Husker Du, and The Vaselines.

The second most influential band (or person) of this time was Nine Inch Nails. This was the first time that I listened to Industrial music. This led me to try bands like Skinny Puppy, Marilyn Manson, Prick, Pig, and even Bauhaus. Trent Reznor’s interest in David Bowie and Prince led me to start listening to those two artists. I started listening to all of Prince’s (or TAFKAP’s) albums, whom I rediscovered at that time.

I also started to explore earlier music from the 60’s and 70’s that I have never heard of. Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, The Doors, Black Sabbath, Marvin Gaye, Isaac Hayes, Barry White, and Al Green were some of my favorite discoveries during this time.

1997 to 1998 – This is when I was brainwashed into Christianity. I got rid of most of music and started listening to bands like Nicole Nordeman, Jaci Velasquez, Skillet, and Sixpence None the Richer.

Around this time I also discovered a local college radio station that played really great music such as Fiona Apple, Beck, No Doubt, and Gomez. Unfortunately, the station disappeared quickly after I discovered it, but it did give me glimpse of what type of music was lying under the radar.

1999 to 2002 – I got over that religious bullshit, and then started listening to heavier music like Godsmack, Tool, and Rob Zombie. I became reacquainted with the modern rock bands of the 90’s. During this time, I also started listening to blues drenched sounds of the Black Crowes.

2003 – Although the machismo filled rock blaring on the radio could be fun at times, but I started becoming disenchanted with music altogether. I notice the how some of my favorite band were blues based, so I decided to delve into the blues to learn about the music that influence Jim Morrison, Led Zeppelin, and The Rolling Stones. Even though I discovered a lot of great music, my favorites were Howlin’ Wolf and Muddy Waters.

During this time I started exploring Jazz. I quickly fell in love with Miles Davis, John Coltrane, and Art Blakey.

2004 to Present – This was the year I fell in love with indie music and Oklahoma’s local music scene. During this time I rediscovered the Flaming Lips, which is probably my favorite band. I also started listening to Spoon, Modest Mouse, Wilco, The Autumn Defense, Pavement, Stereolab, The New Pornographers, Lambchop, Sufjan Stevens, A Girl Called Eddy, Ryan Adams, Belle and Sebastian, of Montreal and M.I.A.. Instead of relying on TV, Radio, or even word of mouth, I now rely on the Internet to discover new music.

Over the past year or so I have listening to hispanic music, such as Calle 13, Inti-Illimani and Susana Baca.

I’m currently now interested in listening to older indie music that I missed out on. I have heard wonderful things about Sonic Youth, The Pixies, The Smiths, Guided by Voices, New Order, Joy Division, Dinosaur Jr., The Cure, My Bloody Valentine, and many other bands.

Today in the United States, it is a Federal Holiday in celebrating, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr's birthday.

There was a lot of lobbying done in order to make the holiday be recognized. A year after Dr. King's death in 1969, the paper work and lobbying started and it was not until President Regan decided to sign Dr. King's birthday over as a National Holiday. Some states did not recognize the King Holiday in the beginning. A lot of tension was still in America then about the holiday (and still is) but not as much now.

I must have been about 11 when this video came out. I still know all the words. Everyone was so happy and elated that Dr. King would be celebrated at a National level. [I wish the song was still available. I have a 45 of the song somewhere in my junk at my parents house.]

Sad thing today is that STILL many people DO NOT KNOW THEIR HISTORY. So, if you are curious, go to your library and research what you want to know. People like myself are willing to share!

**By the way with my parents, we marched at the South African embassy in Washington, DC [my hometown] in protest against apartheid in South Africa in the 1980s. It was a tense time. Fortunately, we were not arrested but we were out there in our marching shoes! No, we did not get arrested but we knew plenty of people who did! I was about 11 or 12 at the time.

The song, Sun City, was the catalyst for the King Holiday song to come about. The name of the group that recorded that song was Artists United Against Apartheid. Sun City song was in protest of Apartheid in South Africa.
