  • Ironic indirect influences on nu-metal

    Ago 25 2009, 1h11 por HuskerDuMaur

This is something that's been on my mind recently:

You all know that nu-metal bands took an assload of influence from funk metal bands like RHCP, Jane's Addiction, Primus, Mr. Bungle, and Faith No More, but the funny thing is that the bands influencing their influences are so vast in genres and yet have nothing directly to do with their sound. I made a list of such bands:

    XTC
    Talking Heads
    Frank Zappa
Captain Beefheart and His Magic Band
    Devo
    The Residents
    Peter Gabriel
    Bauhaus
    Bob Marley
    Parliament
    Funkadelic
    The Germs
    The Stooges
    The Velvet Underground
    Rush
    Pink Floyd
    Oingo Boingo
    Grateful Dead
    King Crimson
    Sly & The Family Stone
    Jimi Hendrix
    Fela Kuti
    The Smiths
    Public Image Ltd.
    Dead Kennedys
    Brian Eno
    Black Flag
    Burt Bacharach
    Bad Brains
    Gang of Four
    Minutemen
    The Doors
    David Bowie
    The Jesus and Mary Chain
    The Cure
    The Beach Boys
    Roxy Music
    Siouxsie and the Banshees

Stats, part 5: jazz

    Ago 20 2009, 16h15 por -273C

Just another one statistical post. Jazz is our field of research today (top-100 of the tag jazz, to be exact).

    предыдущие посты / previous entries
    mainstream
    russian rock
    progressive rock
    black metal

First of all, our traditional arrangement with respect to number of plays and number of listeners.

    Pic. 1 - full size

    Pic. 2 - full size

In both cases the most popular artist is Amy Winehouse (and, yes, I supposed it would be correct to exclude Tom Waits from jazz stats). Then the things go more classical: Norah Jones, Frank Sinatra, Louis Armstrong and so on.

    Pic. 3

And that's the way, general dependence of playcount to number of listeners looks like. You can notice, it's bending upwards with growing number of listeners. So, that means, the leaders of our statistics are treated by listeners in a different way, than other artists.

    Pic. 4 - full size

The graph of specific number of scrobbles (a playcount divided by number of listeners for each artist) confirms that notation. Surprisingly, jazz artists have very low specific scrobble number - 11 in average. Amy Winehouse has the highest one - 32.

    Pic. 5

The histogram just supports concentrating of specific number of scrobbles near very low values, repeating the histogram for other genres in general. Sad, but true. Is jazz dead?

    Pic. 6

Some stats about the user activity in shoutboxes. As one can see, there's no strict dependence of number of shouts to number of listeners. It's obvious, that more popular artists should get more shouts. By the way, Amy Winehouse isn't included here - see the next plot to understand why.

    Pic.7

And here's the dependence of number of shouts in the shoutbox to specific number of scrobbles. Amy Winehouse takes the lead again, having six times more shouts than others. So, she's really anomalous for the jazz. And without Amy, the graph exhibits the property, found in previous research: average specific number of scrobbles behaves like a barrier, separating artists with few shouts from artists with lots of them. Let us see, what another genres would show us the next time)

The total playcount in jazz's top-100 is 348 millions.

  • New to Library: March 2009

    Abr 5 2009, 1h29 por BlisteringDDj

I forgot to write this for february, but whatever.

I've recently listened to a lot of jazz/fusion, which I have opened more up for lately. I've listened a lot to artists like Planet X, Allan Holdsworth, and Mahavishnu Orchestra, but I've moved more into jazz this month.

This month's list of my "New to Library":

Brand X - I think it's a coinsidence that I like so many bands with an X. This must be the most ideal jazz/fusion there is. Exactly what you expect from the genre, even if you're not into it. I love this band, it's very memorable! Their album "Unorthodox Behaviour" is orgasmic!

Mike Stern - Cool, smooth jazz/fusion. A mighty skilled guitarist and musician! I love his tone, and how well the guitar and tenor saxophone work together, on his albums Jigsaw and Time in Place.

Chick Corea - I heard the song "TocarSpain" for the first time three years ago, and to be honest, I didn't like it at all. This has obviously changed.

Level 42 - TocarMr. Pink is kickass, Mark King is king.

Stanley Clarke - Smooth and relaxing jazz/fusion. Definitely one of my favorite bass players.

Weather Report - It's really fun listening to, haha! Check out Teen Town!

There is a lot more added to my library in March, but those listed are the most important! :'D

Next list coming in the end of April, or May... Who knows?

  • Top 50 survey

    Fev 1 2009, 3h32 por yan463

I'm doing this because I'm bored. My answers will take the following form (in Backus-Naur-esque form):

    <question>
    (<artist>)
    <answer>

I reserve the right be be indecisive and to give multiple answers to questions that want a single answer. If I cannot think of an answer I also reserve the right to be impulsive and give the first answer that pops into my mind, though it may not be the best answer. In addition I am answering the questions based on a top 50 list that will likely be inaccurate shortly. Got that? Ok, on to the survey...

    1. How did you get into 29?
    (Weather Report)
I heard good things about Jaco and Shorter and the band in general. I found Heavy Weather at Barnes&Nobel and liked the sample clips. I picked it up.

    2. What was the first song you ever heard by 22?
    (Béla Fleck & Edgar Meyer)
"Bug Tussle", the first track on their album Music for Two.

    3. What’s your favorite lyric by 33?
    (Tim Reynolds)
I have no albums which feature his lyrics, but I have heard some of them from concert recordings. Of those few the one I remember is: "Uncover the reason behind everything".

    4. What is your favorite album by 49?
    (Liquid Trio Experiment)
Only one album exists, this one is easy: Spontaneous Combustion.

    5. How many albums by 13 do you own?
    (Ethereal Collapse)
Again, they only have one album, which I own: Breaching The Citadel. They also have an EP out, Categories, but I do not have that yet.

    6. What is your favorite song by 50?
    (Django Reinhardt)
    "TocarOl' Man River"

    7. Is there a song by 39 that makes you sad?
    (Trans-Siberian Orchestra)
Yes. It's not on their Christmas albums, obviously. From Beethoven's Last Night - "TocarWhat Is Eternal".

    8. What is your favorite album by 15?
    (Porcupine Tree)
This is a tough one. Deadwing and Fear of a Blank Planet are both great. I'll have to choose the latter, as it got me into the band.

    9. What is your favorite song by 5?
    (King Crimson)
A three-way tie: "21st Century Schizoid Man", "Neal and Jack and Me", and "Three of a Perfect Pair".

    10. Is there a song by 6 that makes you happy?
    (Dave Matthews Band)
An impulsive answer here, "TocarYou Never Know" from Busted Stuff.

    11. What is your favorite album by 40?
    (Itzhak Perlman)
I only have one, though it is excellent: 24 Caprices, Op.1 for Solo Violin composed by Niccolò Paganini

    12. What is your favorite song by 10?
    (Pain of Salvation)
"TocarMorning on Earth" from The Perfect Element, Part I. Magical.

    13. What is a good memory you have involving 30?
    (Victor Wooten)
Seeing Béla Fleck and the Flecktones live for the first time. Amazing show.

    14. What is your favorite song by 38?
    (Children of Bodom)
I don't really have one, so I'll go on impulse and say "Hate Me!" on Follow the Reaper.

    15. Is there a song by 19 that makes you happy?
    (Dave Matthews & Tim Reynolds)
Yes. "Oh" from Live At Radio City Music Hall.

    16. How many times have you seen 25 live?
    (Testament)
    Exactly zero.

    17. What is the first song you ever heard by 23?
    (Joe Satriani)
Not sure but probably "TocarUp in the Sky" from Crystal Planet.

    18. What is your favorite album by 11?
    (John Coltrane)
    Giant Steps, without question.

    19. Who is a favorite member of 1?
    (Béla Fleck and the Flecktones)
Tough one, they're all great. I'll have to go with Jeff Coffin; though I don't have much of a reason.

    20. Have you ever seen 14 live?
    (Liquid Tension Experiment)
Unfortunately, no. A few friends and I almost got tickets, though.

    21. What is a good memory involving 27?
    (Nightwish)
Ehhh. None that I can remember.

    22. What is your favorite song by 16?
    (Shadow Gallery)
Oh man, "Stiletto in the Sand" from Tyranny.

    23. What is the first song you ever heard by 47?
    (New Japan Philharmonic)
"Planet Corneria" the first track from the promo Super Smash Brothers Melee CD I got from Nintendo Power.

    24. What is your favorite album by 18?
    (Kamelot)
Impulsively I'll have to say Epica, but The Black Halo and Ghost Opera are great too.

    25. What is your favorite song by 21?
    (Angra)
"Wuthering Heights" from Angels Cry. It's a cover too.

    26. What is the first song you ever heard by 26?
    (Rush)
The first song I heard that I actually knew it was Rush would probably be "TocarYYZ". I'm sure I heard something before that but was unaware.

    27. What is your favorite album by 3?
    (Symphony X)
A tough one. All their albums are good, but seem to have a track in the middle that sort of self-destructs the whole album. "Pharaoh" from The Divine Wings of Tragedy is the perfect example. Awesome album except for that song. After that rant I'll go with Paradise Lost.

    28. What is you favorite song by 22?
    (Béla Fleck & Edgar Meyer)
Tie between "Blue Spruce" and "Palmyra" both from Music for Two.

    29. What was the first song you ever heard by 32?
    (Opeth)
I don't remember which came first. Opeth was introduced to me by my roommate who played some from his collection. It might be "TocarDeliverance" from Deliverance or "TocarIn Mist She Was Standing" from Orchid.

    30. What is you favorite song by 8?
    (Béla Fleck)
Of his own composition: Tie between "Bicyclops" (duet with Chick Corea) and "First Light" both from Tales From the Acoustic Planet.
Of his performance and arrangement: Tie between "Doctor Gradus Ad Parnassum from Children's Corner (Instrumental)" composed by Claude Debussy and "Prélude from Suite for Unaccompanied Cello No. 1 (BWV 1007) (Instrumental)" composed by Johann Sebastian Bach. Both from Perpetual Motion.
He and Edgar Meyer (rightfully) won the Grammy for arrangement for the Debussy piece.

    31. How many times have you seen 17 live?
    (Glenn Gould)
    Exactly zero.

    32. Is there a song by 44 that makes you happy?
    (August Burns Red)
Not the happiest of bands. None of them make me particularly happy.

    33. What is you favorite album by 12?
    (Foo Fighters)
I'll have to say In Your Honor as it's the album that got me into the band. It has a great mix of typical grunge and Foo Fighters fare but the second disc is much more relaxed and mostly acoustic.

    34. What is the worst song by 45?
    (Redemption)
Something off their first album, Redemption. "Desperation" (parts 1-4) and "TocarSomething Wicked This Way Comes" are both excellent but the other tracks are not that great. Their two later albums are much better overall.

    35. What was the first song you ever heard by 34?
    (John Petrucci & Jordan Rudess)
Technically, "TocarState of Grace" by Liquid Tension Experiment (it's just John and Jordan playing). From An Evening With John Petrucci & Jordan Rudess, "TocarFuria Taurina".

    36. What is you favorite album by 48?
    (Salvatore Accardo)
Another easy answer as I have only one album: 24 Capricci composed by Niccolò Paganini.

    37. How many times have you seen 42 live?
    (Trivium)
    Exactly zero.

    38. What is you favorite song by 36?
    (The String Quartet)
"TocarThe Dance of Eternity" a cover of the Dream Theater song (Dream Theater version linked). I also have a Taking Back Sunday tribute album that's pretty catchy, but nothing remarkable.

    39. What was the first song you ever heard by 28?
    (Paul Tortelier)
TocarCello Suites Nos. 1-6 BWV1007-12, Suite No. 1 in G BWV1007: Prélude composed by Johann Sebastian Bach. One of the most beautiful musical pieces ever written, and perfectly performed.

    40. What is your favorite album by 7?
    (Sonata Arctica)
They have recently fallen out of my favor, but they're still good to hear once in a while. I'll go with Winterheart's Guild.

    41. Is there a song by 31 that makes you happy?
    (Pantera)
They only have one good song: "TocarCemetery Gates" on Cowboys From Hell. I'm convinced it was a fluke as I dislike almost every other song I've heard.

    42. What is your favorite album by 41?
    (Demons & Wizards)
    Demons & Wizards

    43. What is your favorite song by 24?
    (Jeff Coffin Mu'tet)
Tough one. For fast songs I like "The Mad Hatter Rides Again". For slower more jazzy songs I like "Dewey" and "Tall & Lanky".

    44. What is a good memory you have involving 46?
    (The String Cheese Incident)
None of which I am aware.

    45. What is your favorite song by 35?
    (Thursday)
"TocarWar all the Time" from War All the Time.

    46. Is there a song by 9 that makes you happy?
    (Jordan Rudess)
I enjoy almost everything Jordan does (with some exceptions). By the same token I also enjoy myself while listening to his music. This phenomenon is not limited to a single song.

    47. What is your favorite album by 4?
    (Frédéric Chopin)
I only have one. It is apparently all of his piano works. I don't know how accurate that statement is, but it's got 217 tracks over 13 discs. Considering each disc separately, I enjoy the Etudes the most.

    48. Who is a favorite member of 37?
    (James LaBrie)
Ehhh. Not much to say here. If we throw out the obvious, the guitarist on the album *checks Wikipedia*, Marco Sfogli, is quite good.

    49. What is the first song you ever heard by 43?
    (Acoustic Planet)
Since this is actually three bands touring as one, I shall list the first for each band involved.
    Keller Williams: "Freakshow".
Yonder Mountain String Band: "Lord Only Knows".
Béla Fleck and the Flecktones: "The Sinister Minister".

    50. How many albums do you own by 20?
    (Evergrey)
Seven, for a modified definition of "own".

Answers subject to change at any time. Reasons for change include (but are not limited to): whimsey, loss of data, planetary alignment/misalignment, weather, evolving musical taste and preference.

  • Sunflower - Good British Jazzy Rock (Unsigned) - Updated

    Jan 14 2009, 19h45 por mellors-

Sunflower (If you didnt already guess from the title,) currently unsigned band from Leicester in the UK, so If you're a fan of quite laid back rock with a jazzy touch and catchy melodies, or imagine that'd be your cup of tea (English cliches ftw) then check them out at the below links. The vocals might take some getting used to, but once you do they work well and the band plays some tightly performed and well written tunes, evoking some nice atmosphere but with a good pop sensibility.

You can now find full track plays of 5 of their songs on an album of recordings from their first session a few months ago here:
    http://www.last.fm/music/Sunflower/Sunflower+Demo
    Sunflower Demo

And also 2 tracks they recorded for a local radio station, Demon FM.

    Live at Demon FM

There are other artists called Sunflower on that page, but only those recordings so far are the Leicester area group.

    P.s. Not my band.
