Virgin Steele é uma banda americana formada em 1981 pelo guitarrista Jack Starr e o vocalista David DeFeis. Atualmente a banda é liderada apenas por DeFeis. Seu mais recente lançamento é o álbum Visions Of Eden

História

A banda se formou em 1981 em Long Island quando o guitarrista Jack Starr, junto com o baterista Joey Ayvazian, procurava um vocalista para sua banda. Encontrou-se com o vocalista e tecladista David Defeis, que depois de fazer uma audição, juntou-se a Jack e Joey, trazendo também o baixista Joe O’Reilly. E com essa formação, o Virgin Steele lançou seu primeiro álbum, Virgin Steele I em dezembro de 1981. O álbum mistura o Heavy Metal com elementos de Hard Rock oitentista. Em 1983 saiu o segundo álbum, Guardians Of The Flame, uma álbum mais amadurecido e mais voltado para o Heavy Metal e com uma produção melhor que o antecessor. Após o segundo álbum, Jack Starr e David DeFeis passaram a discordar sobre os rumos musicais que a banda deveria tomar, o que dificultou a relação dos dois músicos. David achou que era melhor continuar sem Jack e chamou para tocar com a banda o guitarrista Edward Pursino, com quem já havia feito algumas jams. Jack não aceito que David continuasse com o nome Virgin Steele e tentou tirá-lo de David na Justiça. David, no entanto, ganhou e pode continuar com o Virgin Steele sem Jack.

    @melkor72 I agree with you. @wikuk I'll tell you, DeFeis has never taken in consideration the people's ratings since 1995. Eden and Bacchanalia, more than others, suffer DeFeis' ideological denounce over heavy metal music's industry and environment; thus the tracks sound completely atypical and aren't often metal at all. If my reasoning is correct, DeFeis is unintentionally trying to re-create his own music genre, and "impose" it like "how heavy music should be this first 2000 decade". I don't agree with @megabyte1985 when he states DeFeis' run out of ideas; heck, he's re-writing the music canons. Maybe Pursino should participate more (although he represents the classical metal DeFeis is ferociously avoiding), but I believe DeFeis should search for a guitarist more reckless than Block - I'm not conspiring against him -, somebody who can afford the risks to try new experiments; like a Maiden's Gers.

    Black Light Bacchanalia is pretty damn good, the disappointment just comes from the fact that Virgin Steele created an album that would receive around a 8/10 rating after 5 albums with 10/10 ratings...

    Finally some Black Light Bacchanalia worshippers. It is a joy to find listeners whose scorn evolves into delight concerning the progressing musical research DeFeis has been into these late years. A Vision of Eden sequel cannot be unworthy, as the Lion's tragic enlightenment never fades.

    I fucking love love LOVE the fake ending of the song Dominion Day somewhere around the five minute mark! :D Well, actually I love many things in their music, but this time I needed to get that particular thing out of my chest. :) Could very well be the best power metal band ever, yes. At least one of the most unique. I agree with Mr. DeFeis that they are the classical music of today. A fusion. Also really sounds both barbaric and romantic. :P

    I have to say The Black Light Bacchanalia is a grower if any album ever was. I have listened to it in the car recently, and I've only gotten into some of its music, like, yesterday. At first the album seems too long and boring harp, but especially the majestic Nepenthe (I Live Tomorrow) and the overall calm atmosphere in the album like on "In a Dream of Fire" and "To Crown Them With Halos" has manifested itself to me. What first was boring and sleepy is now soothing and beautiful. Virgin Steele never seems to disappoint! Think Necropolis (He Answers Them with Death) might be my favorite song overall, although I wouldn't listen to the album any other way but straight through. Oh and the title song gets so fucking awesome towards the end I'd need to namedrop it if I talked about best parts in Virgin Steele's music (of those I know of, so far). :) Btw, I have 666 VS scrobbles at the moment. D:

    ...Black Light is just an "alright" album for me - which, while acceptable, is still bad considering I'm used to describing VS and their music with the utmost superlatives. Maybe it'll click later on. Dunno why I rambled like this, but I guess I just wanted to post something after a while. VS - still my favourite band.
