  • Hi everybody!

To conclude our autumnal triptych of holy melancholy, we present to you a track by the name of No Connection, which might lyrically be one of the darkest Viola tracks yet, so it's fitting we're releasing it on All Hallows' Eve.

Musically it falls under the same category as our other previous more cinematic efforts, like Never Cease To Wonder, Ada Bell (In A Montage) and Planet Struck. To top things off, the song has 9 parts but not a single one of them repeats the same vocal melody. Furthermore, the instrumentation is built with the idea that once an instrument enters the picture, it has to stay in until the end of the song, building layer after layer after layer of intertwining melodies and harmonies. So if you got bored of our over-the-top pop antics in the summer, I hope these autumn weepies have provided you with enough contrast to bear through another summer of carefree euphoria that's inevitably looming in the future.

Oh, and by the way, the melodic kick drum is a total rip-off from Kanye West's amazing 808s and Heartbreak album. I really recommend you check that album out without prejudice.

But anyway, hope you like this one. Next month we'll yet again be back with something very very different. Something we haven't done in 5 years... But first, let us know how you like this one!

    Tommi / Viola

    No Connection (hifi)
    No Connection (lofi)

    Lyrics

    no connection
    can't get through
    inside the box
    no space to move
    stuck in the night
    with this lonely sound
    there's no connection
    there's no way out

    isolation creeping in
    yet it gets too crowded
    within the skin

    no connection
    time stops soon
I hibernate in this steel cocoon
    cut off from life
    and the line is torn
    there's no connection anymore

when you're left with just your thoughts
    captured by the walls
    you start to wonder
if there is a world at all
even the boy in the bubble
    was able to see through
    and the love leaked in
    and the started to bloom

    no connection
    no rainbow
    no sky up above
    no breeze of hope
    claustrophobic inner voice
    too much information
    head filled with noise

    no connection
    the line is dead
    tangled around my throat instead
    communication cut off like claws
of a tamed old beast in it's time-worn cage

but there's a message coming through
I can feel it in the air
    how can it be true
    if there's no connection
    a signal pushing through
    emerging from the noise
    the air is getting thin
    there's still no connection

everyone needs protection from themselves sometimes
    so I drift into sleep
when amber light illuminates I am connected
but until then there's no connection
    no connection
    no connection
    no connection

    nothing else could get through
    couldn't pierce it's way into this non-room
    nothing else could get through
    what if all this time I was waiting for - - - - -

  • Dear friends,

As promised, we're continuing along the fall-time in melancholic tunes. Not as deeply wrapped in seas of sound as last month, but in distinctly autumnal tones.

This month, we bring you Beautiful Lost Things - a song about things lost in life and the ontological dilemmas involved.

This time we're also featuring a guest musician! The wonderfully wistful accordion track was performed in his kitchen in the middle of a renovation hell by our very own booking agent, Petteri Eeva of Ohjelmatoimisto Pommilaukka. Thanks a lot Petteri!

It might also be noteworthy to mention that this month is pretty exciting for us in many many ways as we're involved in the Eurovision Song Contest. We wrote and produced a track called "You Don't Know Tomorrow" for an artist called Bääbs, who most of you know as Päivi from Tv-resistori. The song is shortlisted with 29 other tracks in the open qualifiers for the Finnish finals.

You can listen to You Don't Know Tomorrow on YLE's Eurovision website.

We're really really excited, even if ESC isn't what it used to be when France Gall took the prize in 1965 with Serge Gainsbourg's amazing "Poupée de cire, poupée de son"!

    Beautiful Lost Things (hifi)
    Beautiful Lost Things (lofi)

    Lyrics

where are all those lost things
that have slipped out of our view
    places that have vanished
    plans that fell through

we can sense how they still linger
    in the twilight world
    stuck between love and oblivion
    and in our dreams
    where we are lonely ghosts
    who always cling
    to beautiful lost things

    this is not nostalgia
    it's purely ontological
existence is much more than we understand

    underneath the layers
    of our reality
there's a place for things that have slipped through the cracks
    and are waiting still
    a secret land within
    where we can be kings
    of all beautiful lost things

    and everybody's saying
that nothing that we do or say
    can bring them back again
but as long as we don't forget
    they'll wait for us there
    all beautiful lost things

    nothing is lost

  • Greetings, good people, followers of Viola Music Club!

Sadly, we had to kiss the shimmery summer of 2009 goodbye yesterday as we're now stepping into September and as always, it brings autumn along with it.

So obviously this means it's time to quiet down here at the club as well. It's been a particularly sweaty summer this year as far as our music goes, so it's definitely about time to cool down a bit with some far more mellow sounds.

So we bring you this epic tale of an epic-yet-imaginary flood called Sea Curtain!

    Hope you like it!

    Tommi

    Sea Curtain (hifi)
    Sea Curtain (lofi)

    Lyrics

this must be the end of the play
the end of the way we thought would never change
so let flow let flow let flow over it all
take my hand for the final bow
    no applause no curtain call
let flow let flow let flow
    let it flow

let it come down at the end of the play
after the last line comes the last wave
so let flow let flow let flow over it all
the weight of the ocean, the deepest bow
leave only the ghost light on
let flow let flow let flow
    let it flow

  • We've asked some of our friends to provide us with Viola-playlists that they feel best represent our catalogue to help you nice people get started with checking out all the stuff we've done on the past.

First up, Arttu Tolonen. of Giant Robot, Black Audio and all other bands / artists (like Viola) that need his unparallelled skills on all kinds of redneck instruments.

Arttu also tends to hop on stage every now and then with us when we feel we need some extra noise in the live setting, providing everything from electric banjo to baritone guitar and harmonica to lap steel.

Here's what he feels best represents our stuff!

Utopia Frailway - A perfect starting song for a number of things... An album, a mixtape you made to score with some girl, a playlist by a wannabe marginal rockstar... I'm a sucker for simple repating melodies played over chord changes.

Outsider Code - For the life of me I couldn't understand why this wasn't a runaway smash hit. Maybe it was the lap steel and harmonica... It has a funky oompah beat and I can bug out to it. The chorus is just epic enough to give you a spiritual lift, but doesn't get big enough to come across as clawing for a stadium catharsis...

Ada Bell (In a Montage) - A James Ellroy story with a Vangelis soundtrack...

Ideal Rainbow/Planet Struck - ...followed some discoed up Jean-Michel Jarre, bleeding into a ballad busting out of its tight, tight pants.

Tedium Rock - This takes a lot fo cool stuff from 80s and 90s guitar-based indie and funks it up. The bass parts are brilliant.

Lovelights - A world-killing pop monster. Depending on the day, I may prefer the current live version of this song, but tonight (as I watch Bruce Dickinson talk about fart gas and torch pigs) the recorded version is just fine.

Nobodylovers - This song holds together so well, it's ridiculous. It's always fun when sketchy rapping really works.

The Hardest Hit - ... and this song is just plain ridiculous.

Imaginary Times - In some way, this is the seriously-minded older brother of the preceding song.

Sad Eyed Disco Dancers - Viola as a band has always excelled at elaborating on that part of the Pet Shop Boys oeuvre that I love. This song also draws an achy breaky line through a pop history riddled with people who insist that they can cry if they want to, because, after all, it's their party...

  • Hi friends!

We've already reached the fifth track of this music club endeavour and this time we've done something we rarely do: recorded a cover song!

So here it is, fully Violated and translated to English: TV-Resistori's ever-so-wonderful 'Näen tanssivan sun uudestaan'!

    Oh How You Dance (hifi)
    Oh How You Dance (lofi)

As some of you might know, we've done quite a few covers (you can find a badly out of date list from pophurts.com), but we have a policy regarding them: we've never played and never will play a cover live for more than once.

We've also always been very hesitant towards recording covers. Actually we've only done it once before as we covered Iconcrash's Chains Around My Heart on our split ep with them in 2004 and even that was kind of disputable as Iconcrash's own version was actually released way after we did the cover as it was based on a private demo.

So in a way this is our first cover. At least of a track hopefully you people have heard before. If you haven't, please make yourselves familiar with " Respa" as soon as possible as they're easily one of Finland's finest indie pop acts! They've had a new album in the works for quite some time and hopefully they can get it done fast!

Anyway, thanks for sticking up with our shenanigans. For those of you, who are getting weary of the dance floor mania we've had going on lately, I hope you'll be happy to know that next month's track will (at least according to our grand plans) be a pretty classic dream pop endeavour!

    'Til then, take care!!!

    Tommi
    Lyrics

    Oh how you dance
    I stare entranced
    Is there a chance
that you would catch my glance

    Oh how you dance
    I stare entranced
    Is there a chance
that you would catch my glance

    Hey baby, please don't stop
You move, you move me so
    Let the music flow

    Hey baby, just don't stop
I'm your captive on the dance floor
I want to see much more

I can't keep up with you
    I get out of step
    This is too much
    Make-up's running down.

    Oh how you dance
    I stare entranced
    Is there a chance
that you would catch my glance

    Oh how you dance
    I stare entranced
    Is there a chance
that you would catch my glance

    Hey baby, please don't stop
A kiss is what I'm longing for
One look and I'm all yours

    Hey baby, just don't stop
    The night is young
    oh no
    I'm already getting slow

Do I have to keep going on
    Don't you already know
    you have to take me
    home with you

    Oh how you dance
    You have to take me

    Oh how you dance
    This is too much

    Oh how you dance
    You have to take me
    home with you
