Fri 12 Jan – Adem, Vashti Bunyan, Vetiver

I managed to arrive fifteen minutes or so after the show started due to some confusion with the tickets (they put the time the bands started on the ticket in big numbers rather than door time), however the show was excellent. There was a lot of overlap between the bands with no bands playing a full set, instead going on and off for a few songs.

Vetiver played backing for most of the bands except Juana Molina who primarily performed by herself using a loop station. She managed to create a large sound by overdubbing herself on guitar, making beats on a synth keyboard and drum machine and layering her voice up to six times. Judging by the audience reaction she was well recieved, and probably for me the most impressive act.

Adem also played with most of the bands, and as curator he obviously was the most involved. However he didn't play many of his own songs, Pillow was performed as a duet with Vashti Bunyan, and Everything You Need being another highlight.

Vashti Bunyan was quite nerve-racking to watch as she was the previous time i saw her. She speaks so quietly and stares down at her guitar rather than up at the audience. She always seems to stumble on her guitar the first way through the riff too (with led me to the conclusion that the man who always played guitar with her was mostly there to cover her mistakes and support her). However, her music is beautiful, with her set evenly split between Just Another Diamond Day and Lookaftering. She was joined by a violin and a viola, piano and xylophone to create quite an impressive sound.

Vetiver didn't play my favourite song TocarDouble (at least not while I was there) which was disappointing, however performed some great songs, msot notably TocarMaureen from their new album. Their songs seemed to be much more bluesy when performed live, with improvised sections for the guitarists to solo in.

Overall a very impressive performance, with every single act a joy to watch. One of the better gigs I have recently attended.
