The last post was looking a little long.. so here's more notes from fixing up the obscure li'l bands found on the Live at KZSC comp. I found:

Unsafe: It's really hard to search for a band with a common english word for a name, especially when the only song title you've got from them is a common first name ("Jenny"). After throwing "Santa Cruz" in the string, though, they were easy to spot. Behold! A webpage that hasn't been updated since 1996. .. yes, that 1996. It's definately them as their gig-ography shows a visit to KZSC on 8/13/96, same date as the recording on the disc's liner notes.

Vessel: They've already got a lot of releases listed, so there's the chance that there's actually a more popular "Vessel" already in the database. The fact that none of the existing releases have a song named "Young Love" doesn't help my doubts here...

...Alright, I'm absolutely convinced the Vessel from Santa Cruz is a seprete entity from this other Vessel, who seems to be an alias of one Gavin Toomey. The frustrating thing is that, well, I can't find any hard info on any Vessel at all. The best I can find is Gavin's label's website. What I need is some sort of biography to make it clear these are different Vessels, until then.. i don't have any proof and I can't justify splitting them up.

Sorry MusicBrainz, this one'll have to wait.

Nuzzle: Another nice one.. quickly found a simple WikiSCUM article with friendly bio information. Complications, though. At the end of the article it says the band changed it's name to The Dying Californian to reflect the significant change in its sound. To me, such a drastic name change for an important reason (unlike when, say, DJ Tiesto sends out a record under just "Tiesto") means that Nuzzle and TDC should be listed seperately in MusicBrainz.. unfortunately, many modders would argue that Nuzzle and TDC are the same band and that Nuzzle should be merged into the TDC profile (which doesn't exist yet, btw)

Well, since -I'm- the one handling the data for now: I say my disc credits a Nuzzle, and Nuzzle is how it stays for now.

Exploding Crustaceans: Another case of Great Writeup, wonderful bio, oh hey new name now-a-days. This time, the archived version of their old homepage says the new name and new focus came sometime after a founding member got married and moved away.. hopefully this will be enough to justify keeping EC and The Master Plan, the new band, seperate. (in reality, no one will ever give a damn, and my desision will last for eternity, but it's a nice thought :D )
  • Radio Revolution: A "Critical Nuisance": Live at KZSC

Having just found the case while cleaning my room, I've just added a promo CD from my alma-mater's radio station. It's chock-full of obscure bands that may-or-may-not have existed outside of UCSC and Santa Cruz at large.. but they all certainly existed long enough to appear on this live album.

The Following is a big fat repository on all the info I've stockpiled for this Add Album mod so far. If you have anything you'd like to add about this album or these any of these artists, please sign-up for MusicBrainz and tell everyone what you know.

TITLE: Radio Revolution: A "Critical Nuisance": Live at KZSC

    LINKS:
http://www.kzsc.org: link to radio station website (No info on this disc found!)
http://zookeeper.stanford.edu/...: only aknowledgement of this disc i can find right now, looks like it's from the cataloge of Stanford's college radio station

Since there were so many new artists automaticly added with this album, I'm doing my best to round up as much info on every band listed and fill-up any gaps in the meta data..

The Need: They were pretty well convered by the community already. their wikipedia article had a link to their long-dead webpage. I redirected it to a version cached at archive.org

Oliver Brown: Found his website, added "official website" and "Bio" AR links as well as birthday info.. also added a few images to his Last.fm page, YES votes would be appreciated there :)

Makara: Hopeless? all i can find are indy record stores selling their 7" and LP and a few lyrics pages.

Gorehounds: Found a fan page, but it says these guys proke up in '89.. 8 years before this recording. Same Band? Turns out: No! Big thanks to this puny WikiSCUM write-up.

Jen Wood: Found a nice, clean, recently updated homepage along with wikipedia and discog listings.. why can't they all be this easy?

The Muggs: Uh-oh. The artist page for The Muggs already has an album listed on it.. the problem is: it belongs to the wrong Muggs. I submitted a Change Track Artist mod to change from "The Muggs" to "The Muggs". I hope it passes soon so I can start editing our Muggs' info.

Oh hey, now I can't add a founding date for the existing Muggs.. When you edit basic artist details, the system does a check to see if you've created an artist with the same name as another artist. If you did, it asks you to input a some sort of resolution between the two of them. (in this case, I'd add the resolutions "detroit" to the existing band, and "santa cruz" to the new one)

The "Muggs" being added in my mod doesn't have a profile if it's own yet, but it's in the system enough to trigger a conflict when editing the other band.

'Course, since the SC Muggs don't really exist yet, when the "OMG CONFLICT" page pops up.. it asks me to differentiate between two copies of the Detroit Muggs.

Moral of the story: Always explicitly add artists with an Add Artist mod before trying a Change Artist mod.
