Now what bands did I not see (yet)?
Here is the list and the reason why.

Immortal - Haven't been near me in ages.
Occult - Renamed to Legion of the Damned, so I've seen the bandmembers play, just not the band
Belphegor - This is gonna change in January!
Gorgoroth - Totally missed it when they were here the last time. I have seen Gaahl and Kvitrafn with Wardrunathough
Behemoth - Never really had the urge to see them
Cradle of Filth - I don't even know why this is in my top 50, I don't listen to them, they just drop by allot when playing a random playlist
Windir - Obviously not possible, seen Vreid though
    Bathory - Obviously not possible
Heaven Shall Burn - Not that big of a metalcore fan, but 1 or 2 ablums are just awesome
Watain - I hope this will change soon!
Taake - Desperatly want to see them.
    Stratovarius - Powermetal!
Hackneyed - Hd the change at summerbreeze, but a man has to eat right? Gonna see them in december though
Children of Bodom - Same story as Cradle of Filth
I - They only had 1 gig to date, and I didn't know them back then let alone travelled that far to see them.
Borknagar - Who? How did this end up un my top 50?
    Iron Maiden - No thanks
Vesania - I'll probably go when they play here (which I doubt)
One Man Army and the Undead Quartet - Actually only know 1 album and bassed on that I would like to see them.
The Prodigy - Not really a band eh? The only electronic music in my list.
    Apocalyptica - Not my style
    Iced Earth - No thanks
Celtic Frost - Just read they broke up (again) last year
1349 - Would see them if they ever came here!
Elvenking - Powermetal :D Had the chance to see them at Summerbreeze. But I valued my sleep more
Falconer - 1 album is sublime, the rest is just standard Powermetal. So... NO
Dark Funeral - Gonna change this summer(breeze)
    Carpathian Forest - Would go
    Ragnarok - Would go

4: black metal // Stats, part 4: black metal

    Ago 16 2009, 14h22 por -273C

A new chapter of statistical researches. The previous entries on the topic you can find here, here and here.

Today the black metal will be the field of our researches. By the way, watching a hundred of black metal artists' pages gives a kind of perverted aesthetic pleasure) Also, there's some good news: I've got a script by Hzlqgmnzhh (great thanks to him), and by its help I can a) collect the needed stats quickly b) obtain the shoutbox stats for each artist. So, a couple of new graphs awaits us now.

First of all, our traditional statistics by playcount and number of listeners (semi-logarithmic scale).

    Pic. 1 - full size

    Pic. 2 - full size

"Damned posers" Dimmu Borgir and Cradle of Filth are heading both charts. And on the next graph a general view of playcount to number of kisteners dependence is represented.

    Pic. 3

So what? The points can be satisfactory interpolated be a straight line, and their scattering is less than in previously studied genres. In fact, that means Dimmu Borgir and Cradle of Filth do not deviate from "genre standards". One can easily see, the difference is quantitative, not qualitative.

    Pic. 4 - full size

A straight consequence of low level of scattering in pic. 3 is low level of scattering in specific number of scrobbles. The average specific number of scrobbles is around 37. Maximal values belong to not so famous bands Absurd, Lifelover and Infernal War, whose specific numbers of scrobbles are from 75 to 80. For popular bands these values are close to the average.

    Pic. 5

Our traditional specific number of scrobbles histogram. The peak around the average value is rather broad, and only a several artists belong to the tale.

And now, some new stats related to the activity in shoutboxes.

    Pic. 6

Here's the messages-in-shoutbox-to-number-of-listeners plot. The data is rather scattered (though one can say, more popular artists have more messages in general), so there's nothing really interesting here, except Burzum falling far from others with over 9000 messages in their shoutbox. That's not so surprising, taking into account their reputation and the fact they in a way represent the whole genre, so everyone who wants to make some trolling around black metal goes right to their shoutbox. And, yes, Varg have been released some time ago)

    Pic.7

The last graph appears to me to be much more interesting. Without Burzum, we have something like a potential barrier here: only artists with more-than-average specific number of scrobbles can have many messages in their shoutboxes. I consider it to be not so trivial result. It's interesting, if that feature would be well represented in another genres.

Overall, there's about 200 millions of black metal tracks scrobbled on last.fm.

    List of considered artists:

Cradle of Filth, Dimmu Borgir, Satyricon, Darkthrone, Immortal, Behemoth, Marduk, Emperor, Burzum, Gorgoroth, Mayhem, Bathory, Carpathian Forest, Anaal Nathrakh, Samael, Rotting Christ, Dark Funeral, Venom, 1349, Dissection, Enslaved, Graveworm, Naglfar, Old Man's Child, Summoning, Eisregen, Borknagar, Impaled Nazarene, Belphegor, Celtic Frost, Drudkh, Shining, Ulver, Deathspell Omega, Nargaroth, Ajattara, Xasthur, Watain, Catamenia, Windir, Taake, Keep of Kalessin, Finntroll, Anorexia Nervosa, Arcturus, Beherit, Wolves In The Throne Roo, Blut aus Nord, Tsjuder, Akercocke, Nokturnal Mortum, Endstille, Agathodaimon, Satanic Warmaster, Limbonic Art, Judas Iscariot, Moonspell, Absu, Peste Noire, Dornenreich, Vesania, Melechesh, Amesoeurs, Nocte Obducta, Infernal War, Behexen, Nachtmystium, Primordial, Deströyer 666, Kampfar, Leviathan, Abigor, Sigh, Dark Fortress, Hate Forest, Agalloch, Graveland, Horna, Absurd, Lord Belial, Kat, Lifelover, Hellhammer, Funeral Mist, Nattefrost, Enthroned, Gehenna, Isengard, Abigail Williams, Bal-Sagoth, Sargeist, Mercyful Fate, Aborym, Vreid, Stormlord, ...and Oceans, Ihsahn, Goatwhore, Craft

  • The reason why I don´t like Black Metal...

    Jun 12 2009, 15h08 por chucknorr1s

BLACK METAL IST KRIEG KVLT KRAP
!!!Tr00ness Alert !!!: Read the whole article before you start a flame war...
    Really!
I´m fed up with people that are too sensitive in regard to their favourite music and overreact...

Well, I have been listening to Metal for some years now and I can say that i like most of its sub-genres with some exceptions (Power Metal is pretty gay from my point of view and I don´t consider Nu Metal, Metalcore or that other bunge of "-core" garbage as real Metal).
I enjoy Thrash Metal and Death Metal, especially old school death metal and the more progressive / technical side of Death Metal, the most. Just for the case if you´re interested, I think this represents my musical taste very well.
Though I like this kind of extreme music I can honestly say that I never really got into Black Metal.
I haven´t heard any good Black Metal metal which has blown me away or where I thought "Oh my God, this shit is fuckin´ amazing...". The only things Black Metal could call my attention with were scandals and crimes but not with their music.
At the beginning of the 90s there were dozens of churches burning in Norway, various murders with Varg Vikernes killing Euronymus as most famous example, acts of humiliation and torture commited by Black Metallers, it is said that bandmembers bury their clothes for months to achieve an disgusting stench for their concerts or that they stick the heads of decapitated goats on piles in front of the stage.
My favourite scandal: A member of Mayhem took a shotgun blowjob. Guess what his bandmembers did! Right! A TRVE Norwegian Black Metaller takes photos of his dead buddy with his fragmented head and blood and brain spilled all over the floor and uses it for his next album cover. That´s TRVE NORSK ARYSK BLACK METAL. RAAAHHHH!
The whole scene is just seems to be too obscure for me...

Just look at these silly faces:

    Do you get my point?
I mean: Why do they take tons of make-up in their faces. Do they want to look more evil, TRVE or more br00tal or whatever? I don´t get it. From my point of view their whole appearance is far from evil, it´s just totally ridiculous and stupid.
And then their clothes. With all those leather stuff and the exaggerted nails on arms and legs they look more like a bunch of homosexuals with sado-masochistic preferences.

    And it keeps going on.
What for hell´s sake do they want to intend with these silly toy imitations of medieval weapons? 3 of 4 Band pictures i have seen so far have contained a stupid sword or axe.
C´mon, we´re living in the 21st century. You hardly can scare anybody with your little axe, Abbath. It looks more like you crapped your own pants

Why do Black Metallers always strike so theatric and dramatic poses?
I have never seen a Thrash or Death Metal band doing this so far...
    Here´s another one:

I think most of you know this picture because it´s probably the most hilarious I´ve ever seen. It´s so fuckin´ ridiculous that it has been photoshopped many times so you can find these wonderful outcomes all over the internet:

EDIT: Three masterpieces done by myself:

"Would you like to take a little sightseeing-tour in the bathroom?
Well here we have the process of creating a Black Metal album..."

    30 seconds later:

    Some important personalities:

    1) Abbath (Immortal) (I think you already know him)

"I want you for gay butt sex!"
"I want you to vote for me!"

Abbath Doom Occulta guitarist and vocalist for the Black Metal band Immortal has announced his candidacy for the President of The United States of America. In a move that shocked the enitre metal community Abbath has vowed to emerge from the Black Metal underground and form a Bi-Partisan partnership to resolve the growing economic crisis that faces this great Nation. Abbath has also vowed as the headline above shows to end Global warming which will in turn eliminate the need for wasteful "pork barreled spending and other ear marks". Upon news of this John McCain remarked "this reminds me of the when I was a young Senator when Regan was in office". While Barrak Obama replied "hey I'm a Senator too". The Abbath campaign has not yet released the list of potential candidates for Vice President but experts have compiled a list of possibilites which includes known republican and NRA supporter Ted Nugent. The potential selection of Nugent shows that Abbath is also for Hope and Change and ready to cross party lines to make America great again.
    Source

Oh! The Scales fell from my eyes! This is obviously the final solution for every problem humanity has to face: Turning the whole world into a grymm and frostbitten Norway....

    2) Gaahl (Gorgoroth) (the most evil man alive...)

    3) Varg Vikernes (Burzum)

Tightest Gangsta in da hood breakdancing:

Cunt... uhhh... I mean Count Grishnackh loves kittens...

    His extraordinary hobbies:

    Some random crap

I think only Germans can understand this:

EDIT²: Added the following 3 pics

Here we have an extremely rare and shy specimen ov a Black Metaller, encountered in its natural habitat, the icy, cold and frostbitten landscapes in the Northest ov the North...

    Translated into English:
    "Daddy?"
    "Get the fuck out..."

The Lord ov Epik Grymness doing some unholy, blasphemik, christraping, goatworshipping rituals in the dark, forgotten woods of Transsylvania...

    ==========

Now I think it´s time for some videoclips...

The 10 most ridiculous Black Metal pics of all time

The 10 most ridiculous Black Metal videos

Well, isn´t Dark Kirchensteuer the KVLTest bandname evah...?
I enjoyed #2 the most, so here´s the full-length version:

Immortal - The Call Of The Wintermoon

Holy Shit! How can you take these guys serious?
Everytime I watch this video I have to ask myself: What the hell did they think when they shot this clip. This is just hilarious.
It looks like some children dressed as magicians playing "hide and seek" in the woods during carneval.

For those who can´t get enough from this piece of art, here´s a liitle remix
    And another one

Omg, i fell from the chair because of laughing when I saw this scene:

Abbath is really a passionate dancer

    EDIT²:
Here´s a totally hilarious article from Uncyclopedia about Black Metal that complements my article perfectly.
    some excerpts:
[...]Instead of saying "this album was recorded in 2008", say "this abomination was infernally necrospawned from the pandemonic womb of Sathanas in anno MMVIII". You could also make everything sound self-deprecating, like "this noise was vomited forth from the smelly cunt ov Lilith" or include songs that are nothing but the lead singer urinating.[...]

[...]It is very important that you do not utilise ordinary grammar and spelling. In DER BLAKK MEHTVL SPE4K, those are secondary, while DER GRYMMNEZ of DER SPEVK is fundamental. Never say DER Norsk Arisk Blækk Mettal when you can say DER Fvkking Tr00 and Kvlt Grymm Nekro Norsk Arysk Blækk Mettal. [...]

    [...]And Finally...

    “Excuse all the blood”

    ~ Dead on being dead

Kill yourself, leaving an apology note for firing a gun indoors and a gruesome scene that, if discovered before their stabbing contest, could be photographed and used later as a bootleg album cover by the rest of the surviving members, after they've finished eating your brains off of the ceiling.

    Have fun!
    [...]

    EDIT³:
Another amazing article about Black Metal found on Encyclopedia Dramatica

If you also want to become tr00 KVLT and start your own BM band but you can´t find an appropriate band name, check out Spitfire´s Frostbitten Band Name Generator of DOOM
    Why not use
"The Enslaved Void of Frostbitten Shadows" ,
"Unknown Lifeless Corpses of Entombed Funerals" ,
"Haunted Warfares of Old Forgotten Mountains" ,
    "Transylvanian Commands of Painful Wraths"
"The Satanic Spell That Turns You Into a Satanic Bible of the Burning Memory"
    or my personal favourite:
"Homosexual Gaahl's Rainbowcolored Hellbirds of the Unknown Hell Journey"
Yeah, I know they´re not as KVLT as " Dark Kirchensteuer" but who actually cares...

    The Black Metal Dialogues

Dave Hill is obsessed with Norwegian Black Metal, the exciting musical genre brought to international prominence in the early '90's thanks to a series of church burnings, murders, suicides, and other surefire attention-getting devices.
Recently his desire to become part of the scene reached such a fever pitch that he couldn't help but reach out to a longtime member of the Norwegian Black Metal community. (Mysticum)
Fearing for his own life however, he wrote to him not as himself but as his alter ego- a 19 year-old kid from Gary, Indiana named Lance, frontman, leader, and sole member of the self-proclaimed greatest Black Metal band ever, Witch Taint.
The following is their unaltered e-mail correspondence.

alas, it has been a while since we've spoken. i write to you from a state of blackness that is blacker than anything even i have ever experienced before. and that means a lot coming from me, the king of black metal and about 50 other fucking things. anyway, i wanted to give you an update on the latest happenings with witch taint and our upcoming release on your label. i'm sorry for not sending you any new mp3's. since our last correspondence, i fired everyone in the band and got in a huge fight with my mom so she wouldn't let me hold auditions in the basement for like a month until i did some bullshit around the house for her. anyway, the time off has done me well. the music i am writing right now is the most evil and blackest music ever recorded in my humble opinion. i realize pretty much no one but me could even handle it (and believe me, i can barely take it myself), but i look forward to unleashing the unholy taint on the willing. how are things with you? really black i hope. what is the latest with mysticum? i am still very much interested in using them as my backing band when i come to norway. speaking of which, can you recommend any venues where i might set up shows? preferably, i would like to perform in a forest or a cave, but i suppose i would need to rent a generator for this. do you think one of the guys in mysticum could take care of this? please let me know. also, i would like to do some shows with mayhem if possible. since it's witch taint's first time in norway, i would be happy to open for them. i will be sending you new mp3's soon. please make sure any pets or sharp objects are out of the room before listening.

blacker than the blackest of the black,
lance, the king of black metal now and forever

OK, this journal has become even longer than I expected so I´m going to finish here.

Now, start bitching around about my music taste and my opinion and start those endless discussions about different metal genres and Tr00ness.

    One last word:

I know this journal is mostly based on common prejudices on Black Metal and I don´t want to hurt anybody. It was made partly for entertainment, therefore you shouldn´t take it too serious.
    And:
Feel free to recommend me some interesting, good, intelligent Black Metal.
I´m always willing to change my attitude towards this genre.

    To clarify some things:
Actually it WAS my intention with this article to become interested in BM. I wanted that people show me some good bands that go beyond my actual knowledge of this genre. This article was meant to draw attention to some people who know that genre well and are able to give me some serious reccs in order to broaden my own musical horizon.
The pictures are mostly there for amusement and shouldn´t be taken too seriously.
I Do know that I have to distinguish between the music, the scene and the imagery and that I mustn´t make the fault of mistaking some stupid bands and generalizing them to the whole genre.
    Keep that in mind!

  • Defining Metal Genres.... / 101 Rules of Metal

    Abr 18 2009, 10h28 por chucknorr1s

I know this is really old but nonetheless also quite funny...

For those who don't already know:

In order to understand the differences between each metal style, let's imagine a certain situation and its outcome, according to each style of metal:

"High above in a castle, there's a princess who was kidnapped, locked in there and is now "guarded" by a terrible huge menacing dragon"...
    POWER METAL
The protagonist arrives riding a white unicorn, escapes from the dragon, saves the princess and makes love to her in an enchanted forest.

    THRASH METAL
The protagonist arrives, fights the dragon, saves the princess and fucks her...easy and quick.

    HEAVY METAL
The protagonist arrives on a Harley, kills the dragon, drinks a few
    beers and fucks the princess.

    FOLK METAL
The protagonist arrives with some friends playing acordions, violins, flutes and many more weird instruments, the dragon falls asleep (because of all the dancing). Then they all leave........ without the princess.

    VIKING METAL
The protagonist arrives in a ship, kills the dragon with his mighty axe, skins the dragon and eats it, rapes the princess to death, steals her belongings and burns the castle before leaving.

    DEATH METAL
The protagonist arrives, kills the dragon, fucks the princess and kills her, then leaves.

    BLACK METAL
The protagonist arrives at midnight, kills the dragon and impales it in front of the castle. Then he sodomizes the princess, drinks her blood in a ritual before killing her. Then he impales the princess next to the dragon.

    BRUTAL DEATH METAL
The protagonist arrives, kills the dragon and spreads his guts in front of the castle, fucks the princess and kills her. Then he fucks the dead body again, slashes her belly and eats her guts. Then he fucks the carcass for the third time, burns the corpse and fucks it for the last time.

    GRIND
The protagonist arrives, screams something completely undecipherable for about 2 minutes and then leaves...

    DOOM METAL
The protagonist arrives, sees the size of the dragon and thinks he could never beat him, then he gets depressed and commits suicide. The dragon eats his body and the princess as dessert. Thats the end of the sad story.

    GOTHIC METAL
The princess in a velvet costume starts singing soprano. The protagonist completes the duet by adding the beast part, while the dragon plays the flute. Suddenly he swallows up the pipe and accidently scorches the beauty and the beast and suffocates to death. All their souls are damned in hell's eternity.

    PROGRESSIVE METAL
The protagonist arrives with a guitar and plays a solo of 26 minutes. The dragon kills himself out of boredom. The protagonist arrives to the princess' bedroom, plays another solo with all the techniques and tunes he learned in the last year of the conservatory. The princess escapes looking for the HEAVY METAL protagonist.

    INDUSTRIAL METAL
The protagonist arrives wearing greasy overcoat, makes obscene gestures towards dragon, and gets escorted out of fairy tale land by security guards.

    SPEED METAL
Suddenly there, short solo, dragon is confused, someone's screaming weird stuff, princess realizes she's been deflowered, dragon and princess are still looking for the one who did this.

    CHRISTIAN METAL
The protagonist rides in on his way home from church and sings a mushy power ballad to the dragon about how much Jesus loves him and that the dragon should turn to Him. The Dragon is immediately converted, and when the princess wants to thank the protagonist he replies, "Sorry, but I don't believe in having sex before marriage."

    GLAM METAL
The protagonist arrives, the dragon laughs at the guy's appearance and lets him enter. He steals the princess' make up and tries to paint the castle in a beautiful pink colour.

    BATTLE METAL
The protagonist arrives with a legion of a hundred brave footmen, war chariots and a dozen elite warriors and, as a master tactician, flanks the dragon in a bloody siege that lasts six hours. The princess gets bored.

    NU METAL
The protagonist arrives in a run down Honda Civic and attempts to fight the dragon but he burns to death when his moronic baggy clothes catch fire.

    EMO
The protagonist sees the dragon and moans about how hard it will be to get the princess to fall in love with him. He gets eaten. The princess is very happy, because he was a whiny dork anyway.

    GRUNGE
The protagonist doesn't get eaten by the dragon because he stinks too much from not washing his hair in months. The princess won't go near him either, and he ends up dying on the town hall steps with the other grungers due to the over consumption of white cider.

    POP-PUNK
The dragon can't eat the protagonist because he can't catch him because he keeps bouncing up and down. The princess won't fuck him either, because he likes ska.

    Overview

The term "symphonic metal" is used to denote any metal band that makes use of symphonic or orchestral elements; "symphonic metal" then is not so much a genre as a cross-generic designation. A few bands refer to themselves as "symphonic metal," particularly Aesma Daeva, and the term could probably be applied to generically ambiguous metal bands like Epica and Therion.

    Symphonic BLACK METAL
Symphonic black metal has similar components as melodic black metal, but uses keyboarding or instruments normally found in symphonic or classical music. It can also include black metal bands that make heavy usage of atmospheric keyboarding in the music, akin to symphonic metal or gothic metal. The symphonic aspects of this genre are normally integral parts of a band, and as such are commonly used throughout the whole duration of a song.

Many black metal purists discount this genre as having nothing to do with 'black metal,' due to the heavy similarities some of its bigger bands hold with gothic metal. Claims that keyboards, female vocals and other gothic metal characteristics are inconsistent with the essence of "true" black metal have often resulted in confusion between symphonic black metal and gothic metal bands. Thy Serpent, Cradle of Filth, Anorexia Nervosa, and Dimmu Borgir have all been subjects of this claim.

    Symphonic POWER METAL

Symphonic power metal, also called epic symphonic metal, refers to power metal bands that make extensive usage of keyboards, or instruments normally found in classical music similar to symphonic metal. These additional elements are often used as key elements of the music when compared to normal power metal, contributing not only an extra layer to the music, but a greater variety of sound.

The prototypical symphonic power metal band is Nightwish. Songs by Nightwish that illustrate the genre well are "Ghost Love Score" from the album Once and "The Poet and the Pendulum" on the album Dark Passion Play. These songs follow the epic scope and extended formal structures characteristic of power metal while making extensive use of orchestral elements.

After Forever is another band strongly influenced by the symphonic power metal genre, and specifically by Nightwish and Kamelot. Therion is another band that frequently makes use of symphonic elements and is influenced by power metal; however, the band probably should not be considered an example of the symphonic power metal genre because of their very strong influence from death metal, which is most obvious in the band's early years. The other examples include Visions of Atlantis and Rhapsody of Fire

The power metal band Grave Digger has released an album named Rheingold with strong symphonic elements quoted from Richard Wagner's Ring des Niblungen, but Grave Digger is not considered a symphonic power metal band because these symphonic elements are atypical for them.

    Symphonic GOTHIC METAL

Influenced by the Peaceville trio of PARADISE LOST, Anathema and My Dying Bride, the Dutch band Within Temptation was founded in 1996. A debut album Enter was unveiled in the following year, followed shortly by an EP The Dance.[2] Both releases made use of the beauty and beast approach delivered by vocalists Sharon den Adel and Robert Westerholt.

Within Temptation's brand of gothic metal combines "the guitar-driven force of hard rock with the sweep and grandeur of symphonic music". The critic Chad Bowar of About.com describes their style as "the optimum balance" between "the melody and hooks of mainstream rock, the depth and complexity of classical music and the dark edge of gothic metal".

Another Dutch band in the symphonic gothic metal strain is After Forever. Their debut album Prison of Desire in 2000 was "a courageous, albeit flawed first study into an admittedly daunting undertaking: to wed heavy metal with progressive rock arrangements and classical music orchestration - then top it all of with equal parts gruesome cookie-monster vocals and a fully qualified opera singer".

The soprano Sarah Brightman recorded a symphonic metal song, Fleurs du Mal, as part of her 2008 gothic-influenced album Symphony.
