Wed 18 Nov – The Swell Season

A few videos of The Swell Season's pretty epic concert at the Wiltern Theatre in Los Angeles on November 18, 2009. The band now consists of Glen Hansard, Marketa Irglova, and the rest of the members of The Frames. They were even joined by actor/screenwriter Jason Segel for a funny song.

35 - Phrazes For The Young - Julian Casablancas 7/10

Short but packed with some killer hooks and choruses. What 'First Impressions Of Earth' should've sounded like.

    Standout Track: TocarGlass

34 - Fall Be Kind [EP] - Animal Collective 8/10

This e.p. makes the list just for 'What Would I Want? Sky'. Song is even better than 'My Girls'.

Standout Track: What Would I Want? Sky

33 - Journal For Plague Lovers - Manic Street Preachers 7/10

A pretty solid return from the only good band from Wales.

Standout Track: TocarJackie Collins Existential Question Time

32 - Dark Was The Night - Various Artists 8/10

A great collections of new and covered songs by some of the finest indie bands around.

Standout Track: Brackett, WI - Bon Iver

    31 - Klang - The Rakes 7/10

"I just had a revolution, we've been f**ked by the institution, so we ain't got nothing to lose man"

Can't believe they've split up. One of the best Brit indie-rock bands.

    Standout Track: TocarThe Final Hill

    30 - The Resistance - Muse 7/10

Isn't the classic album i was hoping it would be but still, its Muse. hugely enjoyable as always.

Standout Track: Exogenesis: Symphony Pt 3: Redemption

    29 - xx - The xx 7/10

One of the years best debut albums. Be interesting to see where they go next.

    Standout Track: VCR

28 - The Kinks Choral Collection - Ray Davies 7/10

The legendary Ray Davies backed by a choir. Bliss!

    Standout Track: TocarPicture Book

27 - Live At The Hollywood Bowl - Van Morrison 7/10

Van Morrison plays Astral Weeks in all its full glory. The original album was music perfection and live it sounds just as wonderful. just wish i was there.

    Standout Track: Sweet Thing

    26 - Wilco (The Album) - Wilco 7/10

A few standout tracks but overall its a bit disappointing. Still, not including Wilco in a best of list would be like making a best of the 60s and not including The Beatles or the Stones. yeah, they're the 00s equivalent.

    Standout Track: Solitaire

    25 - Live in London - Leonard Cohen 8/10

Fantasmical! I've only listened to this a few times all the way through but each time i've enjoyed it so much. The sound is amazing and his interaction with the audience is so warm and intimate. Such a legend.

    Standout Track: TocarWho By Fire

24 - No More Stories Are Told Today, I'm Sorry, They Washed Away - Mew 8/10

Mew have always been one of those bands you have to keep an eye on cos you know they have the protential to make some amazing, and with this album i think they've finally done just that. Pretty stunning effort. Their strongest album by far.

    Standout Track: TocarIntroducing Palace Players

23 - The Crying Light - Antony and the Johnsons 7/10

Beautiful melodies and the voice is as haunting as ever but overall, a little dull. Disappointing follow up to 'I Am A Bird Now'.

    Standout Track: TocarAeon

    22 - Unmap - Volcano Choir 7/10

Some of the songs and ideas seem a bit unfinished, but its Justin Vernon and the guys a genius.

    Standout Track: TocarIsland, Is

    21 - Two Suns - Bat for Lashes 7/10

A beautiful and bewitching album. I love how she writes from the heart and pours herself in to every song.

    Standout Track: TocarDaniel

    20 - March of the Zapotec - Beirut 7/10

    A short but pleasant listen.

    Standout Track: TocarVenice

    19 - A New Tide - Gomez 8/10

Comeback of the year for me. Gomez have always been consistent in making beautiful, catchy pop songs but not since 'Bring It On' have they brought together such a strong collection of songs in one album. This deserves more attention.

    Standout Track: TocarLittle Pieces

    18 - Manners - Passion Pit 7/10

Its hard not to like this album. Full of infectious vocals hooks, stomping pop rhythms and danceable synth grooves. Its just a little too much like Scissor Sisters than MGMT for me, and I always confuse the names of their songs because they all kinda sound the same.

    Standout Track: TocarTo Kingdom Come

    17 - The Ecstatic - Mos Def 8/10

The finest Hip-hop album of the year.

Standout Track: Quiet Dog Bite Hard

    16 - Pourriture - Mr. Oizo 8/10

Mr. Oizo remixes some of his best songs from 'Lambs Anger'. Sound better than the originals.

Standout Track: Steroids (Mr. Oizo Remix)

    15 - Kings & Queens - Jamie T 8/10

The boy from Wimbledon has done it again creating another polished album of modern pop brilliance.

    Standout Track: TocarThe Man's Machine

    14 - The Uninvited Guest - Siriusmo 9/10

This is serious dance music. I'm sure this guy will soon be recognized as one of the biggest names in the genre. Incredible stuff!

    Standout Track: High Together

13 - Elvis Perkins In Dearland - Elvis Perkins 8/10

    Folk album of the year.

    Standout Track: Doomsday

    12 - Jewellery - Micachu 9/10

Produced by the brilliant Matthew Herbert, this is one of the most exciting and fresh albums of the year. So many clever ideas and arrangements. Micachu is a real talent. Like Kate Bush and PJ Harvey she has that star quality. A future British music icon.

    Standout Track: TocarShip

    11 - Resevoir - Fanfarlo 8/10

    Standout Track: TocarI'm A Pilot

When i first heard this i was overly critical thinking it was a poor British attempt at doing a Beirut but the more i listen to it the more i love it.

    10 - Tarot Sport - Fuck Buttons 9/10

" A clusterfuck of noise and emotion".

    Standout Track: olympians

    09 - The Invisible - The Invisible 8/10

Maybe a little high but this is a great British debut. Definitely worthy of the TVotR comparison and should of won the Mercury Prize this year.

    Standout Track: Ok

    08 - Bitte Orca - Dirty Projectors 8/10

Songs like Stillness Is The Move and Two Doves are so beautifully crafted. The whole album is just breathtaking.

Standout Track: Stillness Is the Move

    07 - Veckatimest - Grizzly Bear 8/10

It's not 'Yellow House' but still a very polished album. Keeps you coming back for more.

    Standout Track: Two Weeks

    06 - It's Blitz - Yeah Yeah Yeahs 9/10

    Every song is a gem.

    Standout Track: TocarHysteric

    05 - Flashmob - Vitalic 9/10

Its been over 4 years since 'OK Cowboy' but this was so worth the wait! Monster electronic future anthems. French music rules the dancefloor.

    Standout Track: Terminateur Benelux

    04 - Two Dancers - Wild Beasts 9/10

I was expecting something good after their promising debut but never thought it would be this good. Beautiful falsetto vocals, glittering guitars and shifting rhythms. Its an astounding piece of work. Best British album of the year.

Standout Track: All The King's Men

    03 - Power - Boys Noize 9/10

Listening to this album, and' Jeffer' especially, i finally realise why so many people in the dance blogosphere hold them in such high regard. These guys are incredible.

    Standout Track: TocarJeffer

    02 - Merriweather Post Pavilion - Animal Collective 10/10

For most of the year it's been my favourite album of '09 but after seeing them twice headlining this year and both times leaving disappointed ive kinda lost a bit of love for AC. Still, theyre one of the most exciting and creative bands out there and this album is already a classic.

    Standout Track: My Girls

    01 - Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix - Phoenix 10/10

Been a massive fan since hearing TocarToo Young off the Lost In Translation soundtrack back in 2002. One of the songs of the decade. They've made some great songs since - TocarIf I Ever Feel Better, TocarLong Distance Call to name a few, but their albums haven't really been that strong and have left them under the radar... up till now. theyve finally made their standout album and one that is worthy of critical acclaim.

this is an awesome indie-pop album, from start to finish i can listen to this album over and over again and never get bored. full of catchy melodies, inventive pop hooks and infectious grooves. This is their 'Is This It', their 'OK Computer', 'Hunky Dory', 'Sgt Peppers'. This is a pop masterpiece.

Standout track: Love Like a Sunset

  • Van.

    Out 23 2009, 3h09 por audiozealot

When I was 14 years old, I had a secret admirer. One day I opened my front door to find a single red rose and a Van Morrison cassette tape. It happened in the first weeks of my freshmen year, and I was attending a large school with lots of new people. My admirer, whom I had never met, somehow found out that I was a Van Morrison fan. Although I did not fully appreciate it at the time, that gesture was one of the most innocently romantic things anyone has done for me. It was old school, puppy-love-style romantic. I’m glad he didn’t know that I was also a Red Hot Chili Peppers fan, because the Blood Sugar Sex Magik tape on my front door just would not have conveyed the same sentiment.

Van became my first true musical love a few years before that that cassette found its way to my doorstep. I had heard a Van Morrison song in a movie, asked my parents who it was, and promptly raided their music library for his albums. I instantly fell in love with Van’s words. Some kids doodle through their boring classes – I scribbled his lyrics. I believe his ability to weave phrases that, not only conjure pictures in the mind’s eye, but also convey emotion through imagery, is what makes him a great songwriter. His frequent reference to nature – running water, tree-lined streets, rolling greenery, misty landscapes - give even his up-tempo songs a tranquil quality. Listening to his songs and recounting his words was my teenage escapism. And it‘s my adult escapism.

However, more impressionable to me than his words was the impact of his voice. The effect his sound initially had, and still has, on me can only be compared to a mythological siren call. When I hear that voice, it intensifies whatever emotion I may be feeling. Van has punctuated the fullest and happiest moments in my life - the moments when I am dancing, sharing wine, laughing, and making love. His voice has also carried me through my emptiest, loneliest moments – offering the cathartic release needed to push through the sadness. It amazes me how Van sounds like celebration, grief, joy, isolation, gratitude, and empathy all rolled together. In Van’s music, I don’t hear anger, bitterness, or spite. Perhaps that is why whatever the mood - elated or forlorn - he always offers comfort.

At the risk of sounding like I have any religion whatsoever, I will admit that – particularly when listening to various musical artists – I entertain the plausibility of reincarnation. Of Old Souls and Young Souls. Van feels to me like a soul who has lived many lifetimes. It is my preferred explanation for how - at 23 years old - he wrote Astral Weeks, an album with all of the heartache and pain, hope and compassion, and a depth of understanding of the human experience that 23 years of living could not possibly yield. And not just the lyrics - his delivery of the album, with its vocal ebbs and flows and bizarre repetition of words and lines, suggest an intuition for how the listener needed to experience the album. Van seemed, from very early in his career, to have a fundamental understanding of how we feel music and he crafted delivery that would have the greatest impact. The vocal, the cadence, and the lyrics marry perfectly to define the emotion of a song.

I don’t know much about Van Morrison, the man. I don’t think many people do. He is reclusive, suffers from stage fright, and has been rumored to be temperamental and hard to work with. His songs reveal a fragile soul, lonely and isolated, but they also reveal an understanding that we are all lonely and isolated at times. His songs are equally a celebration of joyous moments and the small, beautiful details that occur in daily life and must be observed and savored.

Well, there you have it. In five paragraphs I managed to cover teenage secret admiration, reincarnation of the soul, and one legendary songwriter. Proof enough that I did none of those topics the justice they deserve. That’s OK, I’ve got time in the future to elaborate - maybe even lifetimes.

  • Nick Cave's Jukebox again & His drunken sing-a-long with David McComb + extras

    Out 4 2009, 14h50 por BlackCoffeeDuck

    Nick Cave's Jukebox again
Another CD set of songs which have inspired Nick Cave over the years is going on the market. This is the third this year and the fifth overall. The first two were Original Seeds way back in 1998 and the follow up Original Seeds, Volume 2 in 2004. I would rate the first Original Seeds very highly just because there was nothing like it before but now that is very different.

    Original Seeds - Track listing:
    1. Tim Rose - TocarLong Time Man
    2. Gene Vincent & His Blue Caps - TocarCat Man
    3. Leonard Cohen - TocarAvalanche
    4. Karen Dalton - TocarKatie Cruel
    5. The Sensational Alex Harvey Band - TocarHammer Song
    6. Tom Jones - Weeping Annaleah
    7. The Loved Ones - Sad Dark Eyes
    8. Scott Walker - TocarThe Big Hurt
    9. John Lee Hooker - Tupelo Blues
    10. Lefty Frizzell - TocarThe Long Black Veil
    11. Johnny Cash - The Folk Singer
    12. Odetta - TocarAnother Man Done Gone
    13. Blind Willie Johnson - TocarI'm Gonna Run to the City of Refuge
    14. Edwin Hawkins Singers - TocarOh Happy Day
    15. Jane Birkin & Serge Gainsbourg - Je t'aime...moi non plus
    16. Isaac Hayes - TocarBy The Time I Get To Phoenix
I would still rate this one the best out of them all. I would give it four out of five stars too. Most tracks make sense if you're a fan of Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds which is the sub-title of the CD, Songs that inspired the Bad Seeds. All but three songs can be found on their albums in covers and/or based on but rewritten in someway. Cat Man was an early The Birthday Party cover. The Big Hurt was on the MOJO soundtrack with the help of the great British band Gallon Drunk and Jane & Serge classic Cave sung an English version called TocarI Love You....Nor Do I with Anita Lane. The liner notes from this CD is great and I recommend this album. But I should warn you about the last song it's almost 19 minutes long and is sometimes a bit too much. It really should be Glen Campbell's TocarBy The Time I Get To Phoenix which is the original too but for some mad reason this one got put on the CD. Which I think is the reason why I wouldn't rate it five stars, missing one whole star for this nightmare of a song, sorry Issac but I wish you got to Phoenix a bit quicker. Cave says about it: "He does a long explanation about what women are actually like; it's very funny. How men have just got to go out." This quote is from a great book called "Songwriters Speak" I found at my local library, more about that later but here's the website: http://www.debbiekruger.com/songwritersspeak/about.html

Original Seeds, Volume 2 - Track listing:
    1. Harry Belafonte - Did You Hear About Jerry?
2.Tom Waits - Way Down In The Hole
    3. Fred Neil - A Little Bit of Rain
    4. Gang of Four - TocarLove Like Anthrax
    5. Bob Dylan - Sara
    6. Tim Rose - Hey Joe
    7. The First Edition - TocarJust Dropped In (To See What Condition My Condition Was In)
    8. Elvis Presley - TocarIn The Ghetto
    9. Nina Simone - Plain Gold Ring
    10. The Stooges - TocarLoose
    11. Leadbelly - Black Betty
    12. Hoyt Axton - Double Dare
    13. Lou Reed - TocarPerfect Day
    14. Alice Cooper - Street Fight
This one is not in any way as good as the the first one. I would rate it two and half out of five. Why? Well, I'm giving it half a star each for the songs which are on Bad Seeds albums the rest are, really could be's. Only Hey Joe, In The Ghetto, Plain Gold Ring, Black Betty and the last half star goes to writing up liner notes to convince you the rest are just as important. Loose was a live favorite of The Birthday Party. Some were going to be on the cover album Kicking Against the Pricks but never recorded. Played live once or twice in the years of playing shows. Mick Harvey has played the others himself solo or on his albums. Another warning for the last song again this time it's only 55 seconds long so why is it here? Well, I don't really know which is what I mean by the liner notes hoping you buy in too what is written but one word for that song: pointless.

Mojo Presents Bad Seeds, Nick Cave: Roots & Collaborations - Tracks listing
    1. The Saints - This Perfect Day
    2. Johnny Cash - TocarFolsom Prison Blues
    3. John Lee Hooker - Tupelo Blues
    4. Karen Dalton - Katie Cruel
    5. Tim Rose - Long Time Man
    6. Scott Walker - The Big Hurt
    7. Current 93 - TocarAll the Pretty Little Horses
    8. Einstürzende Neubauten - Blume
    9. Martin L. Gore - TocarLoverman
    10. Lydia Lunch - TocarDone Dun
    11. Beasts of Bourbon - TocarCocksucker Blues
    12. The Golden Gate Quartet - Wade in the Water
    13. Peggy Seeger - Henry Lee
    14. Mississippi John Hurt - TocarStack O' Lee Blues
    15. Hank Williams - TocarI'm So Lonesome I Could Cry
This CD was given away for free with Mojo Magazine but I have seen it for sale on ebay. It was with this years March issue with Mr. Cave on the cover. I would rate it three out five stars which is good for a give-away album. A few double ups but the version of Long Time Man is different longer re-recorded in 2003 just before Tim Rose passed away. The one on Original Seeds was record in 1967. Cave sings on Current 93 and Lydia Lunch tracks. TocarLoverman is the only cover and the reason for this one is both are on Mute Records. The rest is pretty clear if your a fan but if you buy the magazine that comes with the CD or should that be the other way around, there is a two page write up about all the tracks.

The Roots of Nick Cave - Tracks listing
    1. Carl Perkins - TocarBlue Suede Shoes
    2. Big Joe Turner - TocarShake, Rattle & Roll
    3. Little Richard - TocarKeep A Knockin'

    11. Leadbelly - Black Betty
    12. Harry Belafonte - Mourning Song
    13. Little Willie John - TocarFever
    14. Charlie Gracie - Tocar99 Ways
    15. Hank Williams - TocarLost Highway
    16. Roy Rogers - The Streets Of Laredo
    17. Hobart Smith And Texas Gladden - Down In The Willow Garden
    18. Ernest Phipps - TocarShine On Me
    19. Chubby Parker - TocarKing Kong Kitchie Kitchie Ki-me-o
    20. Mississippi John Hurt - Stack O' Lee Blues
    21. Dick Justice - Henry Lee
    22. Blind Willie Johnson - TocarJohn the Revelator
I think I got this one before the Mojo magazine's one but both came out around the same time at the beginning of the year. I'll rate it three and a half out of five stars just under the first one. I like it better maybe because I love all the really, really old songs on it. A lot of older songs or just a lot more than the three previous ones. More double up's again but a few ones that should have been so obvious before. The Streets Of Laredo was a song Conway Savage sung on tour around the time of the Doco "The Road To God Knows Where" which makes up a few of the songs here which were played kind-off like a tour mix tape. Harry's track makes more sense this time, it's from when Nick Cave - Mick Harvey - Blixa Bargeld did the soundtrack to To Have And To Hold and re-recorded Tocarmourning song (performed by raun raun theatre). TocarJohn the Revelator is from The Harry Smith Project Live Vol. 1 and TocarShine on Me is from The Harry Smith Project Live Vol. 2. If you want more info there is good liner notes written by Dave Henderson who's from Mojo magazine too.

Nick Cave's Jukebox - Track listing

    2. Bob Dylan - Gotta Serve Somebody (Live)
    3. Screamin' Jay Hawkins - I Put a Spell On You
    4. Tex Ritter - TocarRye Whiskey
    5. Jimi Hendrix TocarHey Joe
    6. Leadbelly - Black Betty
    7. John Lee Hooker - I’m Gonna Kill That Woman
    8. Johnny Cash - TocarWanted Man
    9. Johnny Cash - Man In Black (Live)
    10. Tommy McClennan TocarBottle It Up and Go
    11. Elvis Presley - TocarBlue Suede Shoes
    12. Blind Willie Johnson - I'm Gonna Run to the City of Refuge
    13. Neil Young - Helpless (live)
    14. Little Willie John - Fever
    15. Leroy Carr - TocarHow Long, How Long Blues

    21. Chubby Parker - King Kong Kitchie Kitchie Ki-Me-O
    22. Louis Armstrong - TocarMack the Knife
    23. Memphis Slim - TocarGrinder Man Blues
This is going to be the fifth one of these kind of CD's and is out next week (October 12th or around about then). I don't think I should rate it because I don't have it yet. Once again more doubles and so many more than the others before this one. There are 23 tracks more than all the other CD's and all of these are total classics I could listen to them again and again. The songs which aren't on the other ones really should have been included before and also add up to the number of tracks on the first three. I don't know if it would be silly for me to buy another one but I guess if you haven't got any of the other four this new one looks like it could be the best one so far. Last thing to say about it would be is if you know anything about Nick Cave and the song Hey Joe it's off course the Tim Rose version he loves not the Jimi Hendrix one but in saying that Jimi's one is the more famous, and putting it on here is not doubling up the other song again so that's OK, I guess. I do think there are a lot of tracks which could or should be on these kind-off CDs but are not, I shall make a list here on last.fm at the end of this journal.

His drunken sing-a-long with David McComb

I just got this great book about David McComb & The Triffids which is so great. I'm not finished it yet but I think it would be five stars out of five it is that great. It's better than any bio book ever written. It written by all sorts of people. I would recommend it to everyone. One of the most funny story's is written by Nick Cave talking about getting drunk at an Aussie picnic in London with David and having a sing-a-long with each other, I'm going to write out the list of songs they sung but get the full story and so much more buy the book here: http://www.fremantlepress.com.au/books/newreleases/1104 And that is a drawing of David by Martyn P. Casey anyway here's the list of songs David & Nick sung, more of these songs have been covered heavily but I've tried to find the originals. Can you imagine two drunk Aussies singing them???
    1. The Beatles - Maxwell's Silver Hammer
    2. Bob Dylan - I Threw It All Away
    3. Dionne Warwick - TocarWalk On By
    4. Herb Alpert and The Tijuana Brass - TocarThis Guy's in Love with You
    5. John Denver - TocarLeaving On A Jet Plane
    6. Simon & Garfunkel - TocarBridge Over Troubled Water
    7. Peter, Paul & Mary - Lemon Tree
    8. Mississippi Sheiks - TocarSitting on Top of the World
    9. The Seekers - TocarGeorgy Girl (From Film 'Georgy Girl')
    10. Bruce Springsteen - TocarThunder Road
    11. Elvis Presley - TocarBlue Moon
    12. The Mamas & The Papas - TocarCalifornia Dreamin'
    13. Carpenters - TocarCalling Occupants of Interplanetary Craft
    14. Aretha Franklin - TocarI Say A Little Prayer
    15. Simon & Garfunkel - TocarThe Boxer
    16. Elvis Presley - TocarSuspicious Minds
    17. Elvis Presley - TocarKentucky Rain
    18. Leonard Cohen - Bird on a Wire
    19. Malvina Reynolds - TocarMorningtown Ride
    20. Simon & Garfunkel - TocarCecilia
    21. The Beatles - Yesterday
    22. Ella Fitzgerald - TocarAnything Goes
    23. Frank Sinatra - TocarWhat'll I Do?
    24. The 5th Dimension - Tocar(Last Night) I Didn't Get To Sleep At All
    25. Carpenters - Close To Me
    26. Bob Dylan - Belle Isle
    27. Bob Dylan - Tonight I'll Be Staying Here With You
Nobody at the time put these two guys in a recording studio to record all this and as far as I know the only song they did together or should I say David sung on backing vocal's for Nick's TocarLay Me Low in 1994 which I have to say is kind-off perfect and very odd because a few years later McComb passed away but what is even more odd is the very last song he recorded was Still Alive And Well on Where Joy Kills Sorrow album. If you would like that album check it out here: http://www.wminc.com.au/catalogue1.shtml#006 It's a classic Aussie album.

    Extras
OK here is a couple of things that I haven't fitted into my journals before about Cave, first is the book called "Songwriters Speaks" by Debbie Kruger. To sum up the book quickly it's got just over 600 pages and is full of interviews with Aussie songwriters. Most are, if not all, are mainstream singers and Cave is the only one I'm into but I've had a look at the others before returning, did I say it a library book? A few things I want to note down here for myself really but who ever reads these might like to know too is:
In the intro pages Kruger says "I particularly enjoyed his (Cave's) anecdotes about encounters with Rolf Harris and Barry Humphries." which are funny but are nowhere in the interview so my guess is these were edited out because there not about songwriting. The interview starts on page 430 and goes to 445 so it's longer that most magazines or online. It was done at his office in Hove, England in 2004 around the time of Abattoir Blues / The Lyre Of Orpheus.
    The songs talked about are:
TocarLoom of the Land saying the line "The elms and the poplars were turning their backs" which is from Lolita by Vladimir Nabokov and he wished he edited it out because "I don't like the idea of someone reading Lolita and going, "Oh, How often has he done that?" "
TocarInto My Arms is talked about. In Triple J's Hottest 100 of all-time recently saying it was written after he visited a church which wouldn't be anything different from him really but the whole story is a bit more to it. He was in some drug rehab clinic and the only place you were allowed to go was a church and three days in on a Sunday he'd come back feeling very ill and "sat down and wrote that very quickly, and I didn't have anything there to play it on... rehabilitation didn't work [Laughs], at least I got a good song out of it." which makes a bit more sense really.
Tocar(Are You) The One That I've Been Waiting For? he said he wrote in a taxicab on the way to INXS singer Michael Hutchence's house which is a bit odd and kind-off changes the track for me but then again Cave played Into My Arms at Micheal's funeral and famously insisted the TV cameras to be turned off while he sung it.
TocarNobody's Baby Now was written for Johnny Cash's American Recordings but he thought "Fuck it, I'm not handing that over. I really love that song and I'm going to do it." then later on in the interview says "I'm particularly proud of the first verse... takes so long to get to the point." going on to say "It reminds me of TocarTupelo Honey the Van Morrison song."
There are off course other songs he talks about but see if you can find the book at your library too.

Another book Cave makes it in to is "The Macquarie PEN Anthology of Australian Literature" which is an epic encyclopedia size book. Which has some of the best, most significant writing produced in Australia over more than two centuries. Very few contemporary songwriters make it into it only Kev Carmody's TocarFrom Little Things Big Things Grow, Archie Roach's Took The Children Away, Yothu Yindi's TocarTreaty and Cave's TocarOpium Tea which I have to say is an odd one to pick but I've said that before in this journal. Check it out here: http://www.macquariepenanthology.com.au/aboutaustliteratureanthology.html

OK, to finish off here are few songs that might or might not have inspired Nick:

    Post From: http://audiozealot.com

As my first post, I thought I would take the opportunity to reveal some AZ philosophy, just to give you an idea of who I am as a listener, a writer, and a fan. So here goes . . .

**If singers don’t write and perform their own songs, I’m just not interested. I can’t get behind American Idol. If that makes me a music snob, so be it.

**I love language. Lyrists are my poets and I am old school when it comes to writing. You’ll find slang and swearing here - but sorry, no text language. NO JGMNT 2 TXTERS ;-)

**I refer to my favorites by first name. Van (Morrison), Stevie (Nicks), Tom (Petty), and the Bobs (Dylan and Marley) have inspired and comforted me since I was very young and I guess I feel a kinship toward them.

**When I really connect with the work of a songwriter or band, there are never “good” albums or “bad” albums, only ones for different moods. Naturally, I still do have favorites.

**I believe in lyrical obscurity. I don’t know what Stevie meant when she sang about “a charmed hour and a haunted song” and I don’t care. It conveys an image, a mood . . . and it just sounds cool.

**I am a sucker for a kick-ass bass line and I believe that bass players as a group, excluding Paul McCartney, are criminally underrated.

**I believe the songs that completely turn you off upon first listen, serve the function of stretching your brain and expanding your musical palette. We often don’t like what is new and unfamiliar; a second listen is usually required.

**I believe there is too much negativity surrounding music forums. People don’t seem to realize that year after year - album after album - artists have the courage to bare their soul to the listening masses. If you don’t like something, move along. No need for the vitriolic rant about how “the new album is shit” and “they haven’t been good since 2004. ”

I write about the music I like and don’t waste time on the music I don’t . . . And with that, Audio Zealot is born. I hope you read my posts and email me your thoughts and new music suggestions.

Be well and listen with an open heart. -AZ

  • Sweet Cherry Wine anyone?

    Set 22 2009, 22h38 por ohh1972

Van Morrison keeps mentioning "sweet cherry wine" in his lyrics, especially in those from the 70's. I've been wondering about it. Was it particularly popular then? Is it some mysterious slang term for something completely different that I just don't understand? Am I missing something here?

I've never had cherry wine and haven't come across it anywhere either. So my Google-fu was consulted and promptly delivered many a recipe. Not exactly being Miss Domestic, I don't know if I will actually ever attempt to make it but the tastiest-sounding recipe shall be recorded right here just in case! =]

    SWEET CHERRY WINE

    6 pounds cherries
    1 pound raisins
    5 cups granulated sugar
    2 campden tablets
    1 teaspoon nutrients
    3/4 teaspoon pectic enzyme
    1 large orange (juice only)
    1 package wine yeast
    water

    Directions:
Crush cherries. The goal here is to break the skin of every fruit to help the juice leach into the water, but not to damage the stones. Place them in the primary fermentor. Add enough cold water to cover. Stir in crushed campden tablets and pectic enzyme. Let sit for 2 days.

Strain fruit, squeezing out as much juice as possible. Add the balance of the ingredients (except yeast) and make up to 1 gallon with water. Check the specific gravity. It should be between 1.090 and 1.110. Add yeast and mix in well. Cover primary fermentor. Stir daily for three to five days, until frothing ceases.

Put into secondary fermentor and attach airlock. Finish as for dry wine or sweet wine.

    or

    Method 2:
Remove pits from the cherries, being careful not to damage the stones. Place fruit in a large saucepan. Add enough cold water to cover. Simmer over low heat (or in a double boiler) for 1 hour. DO NOT let it boil dry. Strain the pulp out of the juice. Mix the pulp with some hot water and strain it again. In primary fermentor, combine sugar, orange juice, campden tablets, nutrients and warm juice. Cool to 85'F (30'C). Add pectic enzyme. Let sit overnight. Add water to make up to one gallon. Add wine yeast. Cover and stir daily for two days. Siphon into secondary fermentor and attach airlock. Finish as for dry wine or sweet wine.
