Tyondai Braxton

Tyondai Braxton is an American composer and performer, largely known as the former guitarist/singer of American post-rock super-group Battles, and as a prominently featured artist on record label Warp Records. He has been actively producing and performing music under his name as a solo artist, as well as collaboratively under various group titles and collectives, since the mid 90’s.

Raised in Connecticut and Northern California, Braxton is the son of multi-instrumentalist and avant-garde improviser Anthony Braxton. He later studied composition at The Hartt School of the University of Hartford in West Hartford, Connecticut with Robert Carl, Ingram Marshall and Ken Steen. His “orchestrated loops” involve real-time overlaying of guitar, voice and found objects, designed to simulate an ensemble.

Most recently, Braxton’s newest work titled “Central Market,” was released by Warp Records in September 2009 worldwide; the album showcases Braxton’s orchestral music, while maintaining qualities of loop composition he is known for. Collaboratively, Braxton has also worked with such artists as Prefuse73 and Glenn Branca, and has been commissioned by the Kronos Quartet and Bang on a Can, amongst others. In 2011, he performed selections of “Central Market” in New York City with the 30-piece Wordless Music Orchestra featuring members of Zs_(band), Parts & Labor, Big Bear and itsnotyouitsme.

at first I got a little upset when he left Battles, but now I think is great he's diggin deeper into avant and experimentation, like his old man, without getting under his shadow. I chatted with him a little after a Battles gig and he seemed to be a great, down-to-earth chap (Ian was ok).

C'mon people, this isn't those cheesy 60's or 70's or 80's or 90's band breakup, in which band members left in BAD terms, and made good reality show drama. Battles and Tyondai (at least according to press) are in GOOD terms. They are musicians, and they need to focus for the group but express themselves as well, and I think it's appropriate for Tyondai, who has explosive amount of musical ideas, to go solo at least for a while to explore his abilities. Bands are more like collectives these days, both together and separated at the same time. Yes, it sucks for fans to feel a sense of loss when they realize they can't see the band anymore, but they are people too. (For goodness sake, I've seen them live 3 times already. What more can I ask for?) Who knows what will happen next?
