  • An Introduction to The Artist Rock Leagues

    Jun 26 2009, 17h35 por HumanRejection

    Introduction

The large amount of rock and artists leagues, that range from the UK to Poland, the US to Japan, are the new way for Last.fm users to really say who are the best artists from a particular country. Perfect for our large community of music stat-heads, they are based on football (soccer) leagues but have taken their own life with great success, constantly improving and exponentially growing in numbers. Ultimately they give you, the humble Last.fm user, and the chance to say "my favourite band is best!", so come and join in!

    The Leagues

There are many different leagues in the FIRA ring and is growing with strong numbers of member’s aswell.

These leagues are often in the same set of rules than each other but the leagues work a little differently. So always read the rules before starting your votes, but the main thing is to have fun and vote for the artists you believe in the most.

    The Italian League

The Italian League is run by myself and has just started in this ring. So, I would be greatly thankful for any user to join me and the others in the Italian leagues. Now, I need users to pick there favourite 10 artists in the Qualify thread. This means whatever artists that come in the top 20 of the voters vote will go into the Serie A for the first season and the other top 22 will go to Serie B. So have you got a favourite in mind and want them to be in the Rock and Metal artist leagues? Hop on down, join and play! You won’t regret it.

    The British League

The British League is ran by the intellectually enhanced British resident Gilaventi. He has been running the British League for over a year now and have completed a very successful two seasons. They have just successfully entered the third season of the British artists league, so travel down there and join up!

    German Leagues

The fantastical tYhJyYsRuLeS is the creator and leader of the German League and also creating the artist league game itself! The German league has been going since April 2008 and has completed two seasons. So, like German rock artists or know a lot of them? Get down there!

    The Spanish League

A new league to the ring. Post your favourite bands in the Vote Thread.

For a full list of leagues please go to this thread for an updated list.

  • Seen Live

The list below represents a list of all the bands and artists I've seen live over the years, scratched together from old ticket stubs, festival programmes and dragged up from the depths of my pretty poor memory (and prodded by a friend's journal).

The list is far from complete - I've listed support bands where I can remember them but the chances are if the name isn't on the ticket I've not included them. Likewise, my festival memories are sometimes a bit sketchy, so for these reasons I reserve the right to add to the list whenever a name comes back to me.

  • [My Gang] The Guggenheim Grotto - Her Beautiful Ideas : Reco of the Week 3 Feb 09

    Fev 3 2009, 23h56 por Babs_05

    Track: TocarHer Beautiful Ideas
    Artist: The Guggenheim Grotto
Album: Happy The Man (27 Jan 09)
Tags: folk, indie, irish, acoustic, harmonies, my gang rotw
    Video: Click the pic...

    YouTube

It's a while since I recommended a track primarily for its video. I think this video for TocarHer Beautiful Ideas is very well done. It uses stop motion animation and is tightly edited to match the song. There is lovely use of colour and the story flirts with interpreting the lyrics literally whilst keeping one foot in the realm of fantasy and imagination. It was produced, edited and directed by Aaron Copeland and Johnny Fitzsimmons. Read about the making of the video here.

The Guggenheim Grotto are an indie folk band from Dublin, Ireland. They remind me a lot of bands such as Turin Brakes and Radar Bros. in their sound; a kind of mix of folk and indie with harmonies and catchy pop melodies, a bit tongue-in-cheek and with a sense of humour. Happy The Man is their second album.

From their MySpace: "Some punters say we sound like Simon & Garfunkel but neither of us are willing to admit to being the Garfunkel in the equation so we like to think of ourselves as a kind of Simon and Simon."

And the main reason why I chose the song today? Because of this snow event we're having this week. It's not weather anymore, it's an event. And because in the song, they say they "just can't seem to get out of bed anymore". I hear that; it's so cosy under the covers and so cold everywhere else.

NB: Their similar artist radio in Last.fm is pretty good.

  • Albany - 'The Bull And The Bear' EP Review Posted

In their press release Albany are compared to the likes of Elbow and Turin Brakes and I can see why, especially the Turin Brakes. The band have a polished, melody-driven sound and an accomplished style that belies the fact that they are still early in their careers. Read More...

  • 2008 gigs

    Jan 4 2009, 14h07 por hellocellohello

Hmm, this year was a bit quiet due to final year of uni etc.

    David Ford:
-January- Oxford Zodiac (On top form as always, first time I heard To Hell With The World. Fie chatted to him and finally converted Katia to his genius. Support good too, Richard Walters I think his name was? Rather marred by news of Heath Ledger's death afterwards. A surreal night.)
-December- SBE London (SupportingJoan As Policewoman, we left a few songs into her set. DF's set too short for my liking but was so good to get my DF fix after so long! Was front row centre, yay.)

    Tom McRae:
-May- KCL SU with Hotel Cafe (Happy Tom always scares me, but a fun gig which made me crave a solo tour. Turin Brakes and keyboard!Oli were also there. Banter about Croydon, haha.)
-August- Borderline (My fave Tom lineup, Tom&both Olis. Such a great gig, tiny venue. Weird seeing Tom in place I discovered DF after DF played SBE last year. Set included some new songs andAlphabet of hurricanes. Most memorable for South Ossetia jokes during Dose Me Up and a gorgeous, gorgeous second encore of TocarGhost of a Shark. One of my favourite Tom songs but had never heard it live before. Beautiful.)

    Others:
-Guillemots at Koko as part of iTunes Festival (Front row centre, surprise appearance of Martha Wainwright! Not a massive Guillemots fan but they're excellent live, FD adorable.)
-Coldplay at o2 (First time I've seen them in a while, wish it had been a smaller venue and included more songs from Parachutes. A good gig though, gleeful performance of Jingle Bells with Simon Pegg on harmonica! Really lovely piano version of TocarThe Hardest Part, CM is hilariously hyper.)

Might edit this later to include classical music stuff.
