Industrial metal is a musical genre that draws from industrial music and heavy metal, using repeating metal guitar riffs, sampling, synthesizer or sequencer lines, and distorted vocals.Founding industrial metal groups include Ministry, Godflesh, and KMFDM.Eventually it reached a mass audience, led by the "one-man-band" Nine Inch Nails.

ebm (от англ. — electro body music — «электронная музыка тела») — стиль танцевальной музыки, который построен на «голом» ритме с редкими клавишами, «плакатной» примитивной лирикой и индустриальной военной эстетикой на фоне общей танцевальности. В последнее время к вышеперечисленному добавляется искаженный через фильтр «Distortion» вокал, а также, не редко, искаженная тем же фильтром мелодия.

Вопреки расхожему мнению, ebm — это НЕ индустриальная музыка, хотя он из последней и «вышел» (что при более детальном рассмотрении подвергается большому сомнению), и активно использует некоторые наработки этого и других «доноров».

Название нового стиля появилось благодаря бельгийской группе Front 242, которая в далёком 1984 году дала своей музыке определение — electro disco terrorist music, но, как видно, оно не прижилось, и бельгийцы решили ограничиться известным теперь сокращением — ebm, т.е. electro body music. Через несколько лет, в 1991 году, вышел альбом «Mixed by Fear», принадлежавший их перу, который в целом определил основные направления и концепцию ebm как стиля, тем самым сформировав скелет успеха. Среди прочих исполнителей похожей музыки так же стоит отметить Deutsch Amerikanische Freundschaft, которые использовали для определения своего электро-панка термин — korpermusik (от нем. — «музыка тела»), но данный термин не прижился, хотя и распространялся только на территории Германии.

ebm конца 80-х — это музыкальный примитивизм с небольшой долей эксперимента, где простые танцевальные мелодии, сыгранные в холодных тонах на одних из первых пригодных для музицирования синтезаторах, переплетаются с мужским вокалом или же голосовыми сэмплами, повествующими о нелёгкой судьбе человека, пребывающего в оковах государства и отсутствии свободы мысли. Это было именно то, чего так не хватало молодежи, уставшей от набиравшей обороты гомосексуальной романтики синт-поперов Depeche Mode и слишком махрового диско ABBA, но желавшей чего-то большего, чего-то своего, что больше подходило по стилю и состоянию того времени.

Отголоски ebm, можно услышать у SPK, Cabaret Voltaire, а так же Throbbing Gristle в далёких 70-х, которые, в свою очередь, питали силы от post-punk, new wave (electro-punk) и disco. Мелодика же в основном заимствована из new wave (electro-punk) и kraut rock-музыки. Так же ebm много перенял от техно-музыки 80-х, в том числе, конечно же, у Kraftwerk с их техно-тоталитарной настроенностью. Как и было сказано в самом начале, ebm наложил лапу и на industrial-музыку, а точнее, на определенные наработки в области звукоизвлечения, например такие, как: экспериментаторство со стилями («самое лучшее» из популярных на то время жанров), воинствующее настроение (агрессивность, милитари-взгляды в текстах, имидже, мировоззрении) и, в том числе, ставший уже «классическим» дисторшн-вокал (не присущий ebm первоначально), который отдаёт холодом и отсутствием всяческих эмоций. Замес, который мы изначально получили, можно примерно назвать так — провокационное диско времён апокалипсиса, что, в общем-то, сходится с понятием, которое предложили изначально Front 242.

В качестве основной тематики при написании своих текстов ebm-исполнители используют различные политические ситуации текущего времени, а так же роль человека в мире, обществе и различные социальные темы, в виду чего появляется определенная Идея, которая объединяет всех новорожденных ебмщиков. Так формируется примерная идеология стиля — тоталитарная эстетика, милитари-агрессивное настроение, но при всём этом лёгкость понимания музыки, что делает в своё время Front 242 (и некоторых других proto-ebm-формаций) — чуть ли не культовой группой среди тогдашних скинхедов. При этом ebm незаметно прошел тот момент, когда бы его могли сравнивать с «бритоголовой» музыкой, например как тогда дело обстояло со ska.

Примерно в конце 80-х ebm вырвался из закрытых и душных клубов на масс-медиа олимп, превознося твёрдый глас современности, в котором правит простота и доступность, что послужило тому, что он твёрдо занял свою почетную нишу среди альтернативной клубной музыки, потеснив synth-pop, который, по сути, является немного более «сложной» музыкой. Пик популярности ebm приходится на начало 90-х. Кроме всем известных Front 242 в Европе действовало немало коллективов схожей музыкальной направленности — Nitzer Ebb, Leæther Strip, Voltage Control, Absolute Body Control, Bigod 20, Die Krupps (ранний) и многие другие, которые беспощадно трудились на ниве становления ebm. В связи с постепенным распространением данной музыки в массы, стали появляться разного рода клише, которых, как казалось исполнителям, необходимо придерживаться: наличие цифр в названии группы (которые якобы добавляют «холода» и «синтетики» (например Birmingham 6, Unit:187, Defcon 4, XPQ 21), однотонный ритм драм-машины, неизменный дисторшн-эффект, псевдо-ярость и такой же немой протест.

В середине 90-х классический ebm практически исчезает и мутирует в наиболее брутальную сторону, образуя новый легион под общим названием — dark electro. Помимо музыкальной составляющей, которая, главным образом, изменилась благодаря добавлению во все составляющие дисторшена и холодных клавишных, меняется так же и идеология — теперь это мрачное и депрессивное настроение, зачастую встречается злобная sci-fi-составляющая. Основной проблемой dark electro является его неизменность и всё большее упрощение. За, примерно, 10 лет своего существования мало что изменилось в саунде dark electro-исполнителей, т.к. новые группы, появляющиеся практически каждый день, занимаются в основном плагиатом уже созданного, что навевает некоторую скуку от происходящего. В настоящее время так же можно встретить и представителей классической школы ebm, это так называемый old school ebm, например группа Spetsnaz и Orange Sector.

Помимо ухода в тёмную сторону, некоторые ebm-исполнители пошли обратным путём, а именно — смешением synth-pop и ebm образуя то, что принято называть — future pop. От этих двух стилей он перенял всё самое лучшее, в первом случае — это всё так же сохранилась лёгкость и мелодика звучания, во втором — добавило в это ещё больше плотных танцевальных ритмов, местами обработку вокала, но, не смотря на это, future pop всё так же остается довольно меланхоличным. Конечно же, не обошлось и со смешением с другими стилями, в основном с trance-музыкой. Если же затрагивать лирику и атмосферу песен, то местами она довольно мрачна и эмоциональна. Часть идеи future pop позаимствовал из киберпанка — мегаполисы, купающиеся в свете неоновых огней, тоталитарное общество, ущемление прав человека на свободу и выбор, огромные корпорации, подчиняющие волю личности, стычки с «умными» машинами, и на фоне всего этого — пылкая страсть и любовь. future pop, как и synth-pop, делают люди с изрядной долей романтизма, но от слияния с ebm он перенял, кроме жесткости звучания, так же и его мрачную, печальную романтику с лёгким оттенком футуристичности.

Названию future pop мы обязаны группе VNV Nation, которые изначально всё же под этим подразумевали немного другое. future pop был призван придти на замену synth-pop, но общество не приняло его, отвергло как нечто непонятное и чересчур сложное для понимания. Он не стал майнстримом, он стал историей. Историей, которая развивается независимо от всех, историей будущего. Отторжение не способствовало закидыванию future pop в тёмный угол, он всего лишь сместился вниз и занял свою нишу, в которой успешно и варится. Из-за этого пропускать вышеназванное ответвление ebm не стоит, среди довольно большого количества future pop-коллективов, каждый может найти своё. Своё будущее…

В виду своей изрядной популярности в Европе, ebm и его разновидности так и не нашли своё пристанище в странах бывшего СССР, что обусловлено крайне малым количеством групп, играющих подобную музыку, и отсутствием клубов и лейблов, продвигающих данный формат музыки в массы. Среди известных исполнителей стоит отметить следующие: Terra Cadaveris (Беларусь, cyber gothic / dark electro), Dromos (Беларусь, darkwave / harsh ebm), Tekkno Orgasm (Россия, harsh ebm), Rabbit Eggs (Беларусь, harsh ebm), Fat Not Dead (Беларусь, harsh ebm), N-616 (Россия, techno-industrial), Denergized (cyberpunk / techno-industrial), Nexus VI (Россия, Post-EBM). В основном можно услышать лишь небольшое влияние некоторых стоявших у истоков ebm на исполнителей synth-gothic, synth-pop и synth-rock-музыки.

Помимо классического ebm принято различать некоторые подвиды, где преобладают те или иные характеристики. Изначально всё, что было более злобно и не вписывалось в «каноны» жанра относили к hard ebm, который в последствии развалился на разные подстили.

terror ebm
Как понятно из названия, крайне брутальная форма ebm. Скоростной мозгодробильный ритм, резкая структура и чрезмерно искаженный саунд вместе с вокалом делают данный стиль весьма шумным и агрессивным по звучанию, так же нередко преобладает gore-тематика и кровавая эстетика. Классическим примером является группа из Голландии - Grendel.
Что слушать: Agonoize, Grendel, Retractor, Tactical Sekt, Tamtrum, Virtual Embrace, Unter Null.

harsh ebm
Классический ebm с дисторшн-вокалом, а так же немного «грязным» и шумным саундом, что, однако, не обязательно. Это говорит о том, что данный подстиль является переходным стилем к dark electro. Искаженный вокал придаёт некоторую прохладную злость музыке, но при этом являясь всё же «классическим» ответвлением.
Что слушать: Accessory, Aghast View, Decoded Feedback, Dromos, Fat Not Dead, Front 242, IWR, Rabbit Eggs, [:SITD:], Solitary Experiments, Suicide Commando, Tekkno Orgasm.

dark electro
Эта эволюция ebm характеризуется жестким и холодным аналоговым звучанием, блэк метал/панк-эстетикой и предельно затасканным через всевозможные примочки вокальными и инструментальными партиями. Мощный бит и тексты, пропитанные безысходностью и упадничеством, повествуемые вокалистом, у которого полностью атрофировались все человеческие чувства. Основателями как отдельного и сформировавшегося стиля считаются мексиканцы Hocico.
Что слушать: :A7IE:, Amduscia, Blutzukker, Die Sektor, Heimatærde, Hocico, Painbastard, Terra Cadaveris, Yersinia Pestis, :wumpscut:.

progressive dark electro
Это уход от некоторых «догм» классического dark electro, где встречается чистый вокал и менее брутальная атмосфера. В основном является пограничным жанром, к которому относят всех, кто по каким-либо причинам отличается «прогрессивностью» от типичного dark electro.
Что слушать: Andraculoid, Lujhboia, unterART.

gothic ebm
Т.к. ebm развивался практически параллельно с современной готической музыкой, то и данные инфлюенции можно наблюдать так же в виде их совмещения. При этом здесь ebm выглядит максимально музыкально и мелодично: преобладание клавишных проигрышей, женский, зачастую оперный вокал и красивые симфонические аранжировки.
Что слушать: Blutengel, Cephalgy, Dein Schatten, Dracul, In Strict Confidence, L'Âme Immortelle, Razed in Black, Terminal Choice.

trance ebm (trance / ebm)
Распространение транс-музыки так же сказалось и на звучании ebm. Прямой мягкий бит, «плавающие» эффекты и более глубокое звучание — вот что превалирует в Trance EBM. Отцом данного кровосмешения зачастую называют Talla 2XLC, некогда лидер ebm-формации Bigod 20, а теперь переквалифицировавшегося в DJ и играющего на танцполах hard trance.
Что слушать: Headscan, Implant, Nebula-H, Sero.Overdose.

future pop (synth-pop / ebm)
Синтез лучших традиций synth-pop и ebm с влияниями различных танцевальных жанров, таких как trance и, не редко, idm. Насыщенный приятными ритмами и романтичной лирикой, он хорошо подходит как для прослушивания в домашних условиях, так и в клубах. Основателем считается английская группа VNV Nation.
Что слушать: Angels & Agony, Apoptygma Berzerk, Assemblage 23, Covenant, Culture Kultür, Neuroticfish, Tristesse de la Lune, VNV Nation.

tbm (techno / ebm)
Однажды ebm, подустав от вездесущего дисторшна, потребовал сам от себя быть более жестким. По мнению Andy LaPlegua, для этого идеально подходило смешение ebm с прямолинейным techno, которое должно было как-то облагородить ряды ебмщиков. Пару лет, потраченных на «причесывание» нового саунда, — и новый продукт оказался более чем приемлемым, а главное - интересным и немного неожиданным. Формально - это сочный и мощный техно-саунд, записанный по «правилам» ebm. В качестве первооткрывателя и распространителя называется группа - Combichrist, и сборник «This Is... Techno Body Music» (2005, Masterhit Recordings).
Что слушать: Combichrist, Scandy, Tumor, Zombie Girl.

techno-industrial
Основным отличием от ebm является более глубокий, тяжёлый и массивный техно-саунд (но не надо путать с индустриальным техно — industrial techno), больной атмосферой, обилием индустриальных шумов и резких звуков, экспериментов со звуком и его обработкой, вокал же зачастую искажён до неузнаваемости или же используется синтетический. Название techno-industrial распространенно в основном в Европе, в Америке нередко можно встретить синоним — electro-industrial.
Что слушать: C-Drone-Defect, Cyber Baphometh, Denergized, Kobold, N-616, Stin Scatzor, Velvet Acid Christ, Zaliva-D.

power rhytmic noise
Самое противоречивое и вызывающее массу споров явление у «истинных» ценителей industrial-музыки — отнесение rhytmic noise к ebm. На самом деле не всё так просто, как хочется казаться: большинство исполнителей, играющих так называемый power rhytmic noise, создают свою музыку по канонам ebm, т.е. примитивно, чётко и максимально клубно. В данном случае мы имеем явный ebm, но с изрядной долей индустриальных шумов, заводских семплов и прочей радости индастриал-мена. Но добрая доля power rhytmic noise-террористов идёт своим путём, минуя клубы, создавая поистине ритмичные шумовые ландшафты, избегая монотонности в ритме и, тем более, классического (или же «примоченного») ebm-вокала (например Converter, Mlada Fronta и другие).
Что слушать: C/A/T, Caustic, Dive, Dulce Liquido, HIV+, Noisuf-X, Nullvektor, Pierrepoint, Siechtum, S.K.E.T., Soman, Terrorfakt, xotox.

post-ebm / neo-ebm
Эксперименты окончательно не умерли, люди продолжают искать новое в давно уже надоевшем — и находят! Новые формы и метаморфозы преследуют ebm, благодаря которым он открывается с совершенно разных сторон, вплоть до симбиоза с hip-hop.
Что слушать: Nexus VI, Stromkern.
