  • My Year In Music - 2009

    Dez 31 2009, 14h01 por Quicksand227

    - Favourite albums:

    1. Archive - Controlling Crowds (I-IV)

I didn't expect any album to top Porcupine Tree's new record, but Archive managed to impress me most this year. I first got to know about the band on my last.fm recommendations and by seeing that they'd come to Munich in October. Loving concept records, I knew this could be an interesting album. At first, it didn't impress me that much to be honest.
The album really clicked for me while being on a 4-hour drive through the alps on my way to a five day trip to a glacier with my geography course. Somehow the landscape of the austrian alps matched perfectly with the album's sound - I even started to love the three songs with their rapper Rosko John (I'm usually not very fond of rapping).
I love the album's dense atmopshere created by both weird sound effects and the lyrics. I also never heard a band with four individual vocalists - all of them add so much variety to the sound of Archive.
Even the bonus tracks of the album, especially Killing All Movement, have the same quality of the album tracks.
Part IV, that was released seperately in October, has not really clicked for me yet, but I guess I just need a couple more listens to fully appreciate it, since I absolutely adore the first three parts.

I was lucky to see them perform the first two parts of the record live in Munich. Their live visuals even intensified the listening experience and especially Pollard Berrier stood out as a very charismatic performer.

    2. Porcupine Tree - The Incident Limited Deluxe Edition

Porcupine Tree's new album was of course the one I was looking forward to most this year. The idea of a 55 minute song-cycle got me very excited and I didn't want to miss the limited deluxe edition since I unfortunately missed the Insurgentes deluxe edition at the end of 2008. This time, I finally managed to order a copy soon enough. Even though I consider myself as a very patient person, waiting for the package to finally arrive was really straining, especially since I forced myself to no listen to any snippet or studio footage beforehand, because I wanted my first listen of the album to be in surround sound.
Both discs are incredibly inspiring: the recurring chord progression in "The Incident", the intuitive use of odd time signatures and the band compositions, where the other band members finally get a chance to shine: Flicker with a beautiful bass line by Colin Edwin (whose solo album Third Vessel narrowly missed my top 10), Bonnie the Cat with it's creative drum beat by Gavin Harrison and Black Dahlia, which was entirely composed by Richard Barbieri.
Listening to the record in 5.1 surround sound with the accompanying book of amazing artwork (done by Lasse Hoile as usual) and lyrics adds very much to the listening experience and absorbed me into it's dark atmosphere.
I also loved their full lenght live performance of The Incident, they managed to deliver it perfectly! I was lucky to see them live twice this year, one time focused on the visuals (once more, genius job by Lasse Hoile) and the second time more on the band performance. In connection with Stick Men opening for them playing King Crimson's Indiscipline amongst others, this second gig was my favourite concert this year.

Take a look at the book of artwork here:

    3. Grizzly Bear - Veckatimest

John Gourley, the lead singer and guitarist of Portugal. The Man highly recommended this album via their homepage, so I thought I should give it a listen on myspace since I never heard anything by Grizzly Bear so far.
As soon as Two Weeks started, I knew this could be an album for me. Then I discovered the site La Blogotheque - concerts à emporter and the gorgeous performances by them.
I really adore the album because of it's experimental use of uncommom chords while keeping the song structures rather simple (besides using a couple of odd time signatures). I think it's rare that music is catchy and experimental at the same time.
I just found an interesting track-by-track description by the band here.
Their concert in Munich was a highlight of the year, too - I loved the great performance as well as their simple but very beautiful lighting.

    4. Steven Wilson - Insurgentes

As mentioned above, it really was a bummer that I missed the deluxe editon of this album since I really enjoyed Lasse Hoile's artwork and the 18 minute excerpt of the accompanying documentary of the album which highly influenced my own view on packaging and albums as a journey.
At least the digibook release of the album contained a 5.1. surround sound mix, too. I love the way Steven Wilson mixes in surround sound and I doubt this album would be so high on my list if I only had a stereo mix.
I can't describe the intense goosebumps I get by listening to Get All You Deserve in 5.1 - it's such a simple but ingenious idea to start of with a beautifully calm piano ballad and then destroying the beauty with this eerie white noise he came up with.
I love the fact that this record covers basically every musical side of Steven Wilson ranging from Progressive Rock (Harmony Korine), Drone (Get All You Deserve), Trip-Hop mixed with Drone (Abandoner) and Experimental (No Twilight Within the Courts of the Sun) to Ambient (Veneno Para Las Hadas), beautiful piano ballads (Insurgentes) and even Post-Rock elements (Only Child) while still somehow keeping an overall sound that makes the album best when listened to as a whole.

I also really enjoyed participating in the Abandoner Remix competition.

    5. Isis- Wavering Radiant

Isis is a band I discovered a couple of years ago via youtube - I loved the sound of TocarIn Fiction but the vocals weren't my cup of tea at that time. After getting into growls a bit more through Opeth last year, I was looking forward to this album and hoping to dig the vocals, too.
The album didn't impress me much at the beginning, the growl parts seemed rather unfitting next to the melodic instrumental parts. But over the year, the album grew on me more and more, I started to really like the complex arrangements of the songs and the overall flow of the record. A couple of days ago, I was completely blown away by the album, so now I can say that it's definately one of my favourite "heavy" records ever!

Their concert in Munich was great, too:

    6. Arms & Sleepers - Matador

Arms And Sleepers is a band I discovered through Last.fm.
I only bought the album at the beginnnig of this month but it never really left my hi-fi system since then and somehow it ended up being very high on my list.
I love it's calm, even fragile sound - exactly what I needed to guide me through this season. This is just perfect for cold snowy winter evenings, listening through headphones with goosebumps all over your body. Too bad I won't be able to see any of their concerts in Germany next year...

Nice short interview with the band: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IRD8_qBot4Y

    7. Pure Reason Revolution - Amor Vincit Omnia

Here comes another artist that I discovered via Last.fm. The song The Bright Ambassadors Of Morning popped up on my recommendations radio and I instantly fell in love with the band's sound.
I bought their new record only knowing that one song, so I couldn't believe my ears when the intro synth riff of Les Malheurs started.
The album is very different to their first effort, but once you accept that, this album has so much to offer. Regarding the reviews, many people obviously couldn't deal with the industrial and even electronic sound of AVO, but I love when bands decide to make something completly different if they keep the quality on the same level. Combined with their beautifully arranged vocal harmonies, the overall sound of the album as a whole is pretty weird and nothing I've ever heard so far, which is probably also a main reason why I like it so much.

Their live performances of the album are amazing, too:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-hCDv5kWd5E

    8. Tortoise - Beacons Of Ancestorship

Tortoise has also been on my last.fm recommendations list for quite some time now, so their new album seemed like the ideal opportunity to finally get into them. Beacons Of Ancestorship really impressed me because of it's unique sound outside of any genre and it's experimental use of both synthesizers and two drums playing simultaneously.
Simple but very creative ideas like the rhythm of Charteroak Foundation (the guitar starts in triads giving the listener the impression the song is in 6/8 - then the drums kick in with a straight 4/4 beat and the whole thing turns around) make the album special for me.
Their concert in Munich this summer was one of my favourites this year, too.
It was very interesting to see how they play these songs live, especially with the two drums in the front of the stage. In addition, they seemed to dig their music very much which I always enjoy seeing. Last but not least their visuals created a very nice mood in connection with the music.

Check out a few live performances here:

    9. John Frusciante - The Empyrean

Over the last couple of years, I lost basically all of my interest in the Red Hot Chili Peppers and instead discovered that John Frusciante's solo albums were more than just a side project. When the rumours about John leaving RHCP came up which were verified by him only a couple of days later on his web site, stating that his interests changed into "making a different kind of music, alone, and being my own engineer" and that he thinks that "art has never been something done out of a sense of duty", my respect and adoration for him as a musician soared.

Here is an incredibly inspiring interview with him on the album, but also inspiring for life in general - at least for me ;):
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7lfw7YRpkfY
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oiSJKfLS75o

    10. The Mars Volta - Octahedron

We all know that Omar A. Rodriguez-Lopez has raised the standards when it comes to the quanitity of releases a year (he released 6 solo albums this year!), but regardless of that I didn't expect to hear another TMV record so soon after last year's The Bedlam in Goliath.
For this album, Omar decided to limit himself and write a more straight forward album without "adding 97 parts to the song". I really like the outcome, it's very different to the wall of sound of TBIG, it has a more pyschedelic and acoustic sound which adds even more variety to their sound. Of course this album is still very complex and innovative non the less.
It's a shame though that their amazing drummer Thomas Pridgen had to leave the band before the start of their european tour...but at least I could see him in action with them once more at the Southside Festival this summer!

Needless to say that the "simple" songs still kick ass live:

This deluxe edition was just too lovely to miss. Besides the album itself and the additional All Animals EP, the package contains the amazing Riceboy Sleeps book of artwork by Jónsi & Alex, a badge and on top of it, a coloring book and a set of pencils.

You can get an impression here:
    Riceboy Sleeps Book

    - Portugal. The Man - The Satanic Satanist:

Regarding the artwork, Portugal. The Man really came up with something unique for this record. As shown in the picture above, the artwork can be transformed in various ways in order to create new variations.
For me, this album is a perfect example of a nice package while keeping a reasonable and affordable price.

    - Porcupine Tree - The Incident Limited Deluxe Edition:

This one, instead, is a perfect example of a really lavish package.
The deluxe edition of The Incident contains the album on 2 CDs, a 5.1 surround mix of the album on the DVD, a softcover book of pretty weird drawings by Hajo Müller and a very big hardcover book with extensive artwork and the lyrics all housed in a nice solid slipcase.

    2009 W LICZBACH

No cóż, tu działo się chyba najwięcej.

Zaskoczeniem roku prawdopodobnie zostanie debiutancki album The xx.

10 fantastycznych, energetycznych rockowych kawałków podszytych electropopowymi synthami. Zupełnie inny album zaprezentował HEALTH - noise rockowa rzeźnia, charakterystycznie brzmiące tribalowe bębny, mniam. Na koniec zostawiłem sobie płytę The Gathering.

    - The Warlocks - The Mirror Explodes (psychedelic rock, shoegaze)
    - Zelienople - Give It Up (slowcore, drone)
    - Rubik - Dada Bandits (indie rock)
    - Pustki - Kalambury (indie pop)
    - Part Chimp - Thriller (noise rock)

    ELEKTRONIKA
    45 pozycji powyżej 6/10

Jako, że elektronika to moja druga miłość (a serducho mam pojemne), tutaj też znalazłem sporo fajnych rzeczy. To w tych klimatach działa zespół który wydał moją prywatną płytę roku - Fuck Buttons. Co to takiego? A takie mocno zwariowane granie, łączące tribalowe bębnienie, minimalową techniawę, drony, trochę noisu. Łatwiej byłoby powiedzieć czego tu nie ma. Jedna z płyt dekady, tak powiadam. Duże wrażenie zrobił też Clark, świetne podsumowanie dotychczasowej twórczości. Brytyjczyk wziął to co najlepsze z "Body Riddle" i "Turning Dragon" i wymieszał. Efektem jest świetna, trudno do oderwaniasię, kolorowo-wsamrazdobaunsu płyta. Zupełnie inną płytę wydał The Field, ponownie pokazał subtelne, transowe, ciepłe oblicze minimal techno. No i dzięki samplowi Cocteau Twins w The More That I Do na nowo rozbudził we mnie miłość do tego wspaniałego zespołu.

Second Lives, jestem skłonny mu to wybaczyć.

    - 10-20 - 10-20 (idm)
    - Robert Logan - Inscape (???)
    - Ben Klock - One (minimal techno)
    - Estroe - Elemental Assets (minimal techno)
    - Tesla Boy - The Tesla Boy (synth pop)

    HIP-HOP I OKOLICE

    - Torae & Marco Polo - Double Barrel
    - Lukid - Foma
    - Fashawn - Boy Meets World
    - NaPszykłat - NP
    - Wax Tailor - In the Mood for Life

    METAL

No tak trochę podobnie. OM nom nom, to były natomiast moje pierwsze słowa po zetknięciu się z "God Is Good". :D

    PROSZĘ O WIĘCEJ HAJPU DLA:
    - Kylesa - Static Tensions
    - Diablo Swing Orchestra - Sing Along Songs for the Damned & Delirious
    - Nile - Those Whom the Gods Detest

    EKSPERYMENTY, DŻEZY, I INNE POPY

Jednak to solowe "Cities" porządnie mną wstrząsnęło.

    KONIEC

No. Już koniec. A zapowiada się całkiem całkiem, zapraszam do swojego dziennika z premierami 2010, niedługo w końcu go zaktualizuję. Stej tjund. Tymczasem życzę wam wszystkiego najlepszego w Nowym Roku. :)

BTW: Aha, obiecałem nagrodę. Nagrodą dla wytrwałych jest mój prywatny buziak - :* ;)

  • 2009 Best of Edition

    Top Twenty:
I really enjoyed this year musically. A lot of great stuff came out of the cervices, to see the light of day. Obviously this indicates my favorite picks, not everything I listened to over the year. Your tastes may differ from mine as well, so keep this in mind. And a new section has been created, to sort of let you know what I would have enjoyed in 2008 had I known about it (or given it a proper listen). Enjoy yourself wonderful people and notes have been added regarding volume levels, etc. Please take note of them, since some of this is very loud.

    In no particular order:

    1. Hecker– Acid in the Style of David Tudor*
    2. Dominque Leone – Abstract Expression
    3. Neon Indian – Psychic Chasms
    4. SND – Atavism**
    5. Dan Deacon – Bromst
    6. Fuck Buttons – Tarot Sport
    7. Tortoise– Beacons of Ancestorship
    8. DAT Politics – Mad Kit
    9. Japandroids– Post-Nothing

    11. Animal Collective – Merriweather Post Pavilion
    12. Cheer Accident – Fear Draws Misfortune
    13. The Field – Yesterday and Today
    14. Thomas Koner – La Barca
    15. Jay Reatard – Watch Me Fall
    16. Leyland Kirby – Sadly, the Future is No Longer What it was
    17. Oneida– Rated O
    18. Memory Tapes – Seek Magic
    19. DJ Sprinkles – Midtown 120 Blues
    20. EmptySet- Emptyset

*Listen to on speakers only, due to panning and 3D Sound, abstract doesn’t even begin to describe it.
    **Headphones (strongly) recommended
***Really, almost unbelievably loud. Watch the volume levels.
    Songs of the Year:
Yeah, sure, why not have this section. Sometimes an album may be boring, but one or two of the songs is decent enough to mention. Often they don’t even release a full blown album, but rather one or two songs via blogs, myspace, etc.

Das Racist – Combination Pizza Hut and Taco Bell
    Derek Rogers– Cosmic Overlap
    Andy Stott – Night Jewel
Broadcast and The Focus Group – Royal Chant
    Bibio– Jealous of Roses
Casiotone for the Painfully Alone – Hot Boyz
    Deerhunter– Circulation
Real EstateReal Estate – Fake Blues (EP)
Lighting Bolt – Nation of Boar
The Juan McLean – Happy House

New Section: Amendments to 2008 (or: Things I should’ve put on last year’s list or at least mentioned)

    Mogwai: Hawk is howling
    Dan Friel: Ghost Town

  • Albums of the year 2009

    Dez 23 2009, 16h54 por Grizz

Another year eh? A pretty good year none the less. Infact I feel a little bothered that I've not listened to the albums enough just because there has been a huge quantity of amazing releases from all area's and it's hard to keep track. There's definately a shedload of records that I like that haven't grabbed me immediately and probably will when I go back to them but oh well. Here's my top 25 for 2009!

    25

    Converge
    Axe To Fall
Still smashing it after 20 years. Probably their most accessable work and their best since Jane Doe.

    24

    Nosaj Thing
    Drift
Impressive Debut drawn from many influences. Coat of Arms is one the best tracks of 2009.

    23

    FEW NOLDER
    New Folder
Winner of best artist name & album! Who thought Lithuanian techno could be so involved and tuneful. Best record from Planet Mu for a long while.

    22

    Mistabishi
    Drop
Possibly the weirdest drum n bass album ever, and the best of the year although its been a particularly quiet one in the scene. Printer Jam is another crazy, amazing track

    21

    Kiki
    Kaiku
Great discovery thanks to the Milkman's site. This one gets better and better throughout and contains several tracks perfect for the dance floor.

    20

    The Horrors
    Primary Colours
Suprise of the year. Never even thought I'd listen to them after their debut but this is a brilliant sophomore record thanks largely to a host of 80's influences, most notably Echo & the Bunneymen.

    19

    Black Jazz Consortium
    Structure
Great year for Deep House which I wasn't too familiar with before I must admit. This records got heaps of soul and kept me nodding late into the night in the Summer.

    18

    Shackleton
    Three LP's
Shackleton's debut full length consolidates his position as one of the most creative and unpredictable figures in bass orientated music. I get lost in the middle of this album every time (In the best way).

    17

    DJ Sprinkles
    Midtown 120 Blues
Whilst BJC has the tracks, Sprinkles has a vivid personality embodied in the tracks on Midtown 120 Blues and skews the listener into some brilliantly worked Deep House.

Must admit I know little about this record but absolutely adore it. Contains a hell of a lot of samples including a Door's re-work of Alabama Song. Only gripe is the short length of the record.

    Manuel Tur
    0201
Another debut and new discovery. Pretty much a great all round dance record which doesn't stick to the same beaten path for too long. His Resident Advisor mix is also well worth a listen. One for the future I hope.

    Kona Triangle
Sing a New Sapling into Existence
Collaboration between Lone and Keaver & Brause. The collaboration works especially well managing to melt their own sounds into this fantastic record.

    13

    Pendle Coven
    Self Assessment
Dark brooding progressive techno from the ever improving Modern Love label and one of the techno picks of the year.

    12

    Bibio
    Vignetting The Compost
Its been a hell of a year for Bibio but I do love this album a lot more than his inconsistent Warp debut. Spring wouldn't be spring without a bit of Bibio playing in the background.

    11

    Tim Hecker
    An Imaginery Country
I'm no fan generally of pure Ambient, modern classical, drone, whatever you want to call the sounds that people like to litter Hecker's music with but I am a massive fan of this record. Brilliant.

    10

    The Black Dog
    Further Vexations
While AFX isn't releasing anything, BoC have disappeared, Squarepusher seems content on peddling his bass noodlings and Warp generally move away from the sound that made them what they are today you'd be forgiven for stating that Braindance (or whatever you like to call it) has had it's day. Whilst this is probably true, The Black Dog's Ken Downie is still going strong 20 years later and releases Further Vexations which ticks all the right boxes the aforementioned artists used to do years ago. One of the best Braindance/IDM records of the last 5 years.

    9

    Tortoise
    Beacons Of Ancestorship
The prospect of the first Tortoise album in 5 years got me anticipating excitedly for the first half of the year and at first I was very disappointed. Where many Tortoise fans love their earlier work I always preffered "Its all around You" and couldn't at first grasp the next turnaround the band had done with this album. After forcing myself a little I managed to grasp the album fully and love the shift changes in tracks, the totally different sound from one track to the other and the fact that this is probably Tortoise at their best.

    8

    Martyn
    Great Lengths
A lot of my friends love dubstep. They'll download and play me tracks with throbbing wub wub basslines dancing up and down and getting giddy with excitement at the same old bassline and the fact the tracks are generally very fast and upbeat. I play them something from Great Lengths and they hate it, say its boring and don't bother with my (pretty poor!) arguments for Martyn, and against their general stereotyped Rusko-esque tracks. We go see the 2 mentioned artists amongst others live in a Warehouse and that all changes and they understand finally. Whilst its hard to capture the sound of a live mix within a record Great Lengths doesn't compare too badly and manages in a day where bass music is in danger of killing itself with the same old to distinguish itself from the pack, even from electronic music altogether.

    7

    Harmonic 313
    WHEN MACHINES EXCEED HUMAN INTELLIGENCE
For all the hype and promotion that Warp usually give new albums when they are released the Harmonic album, slipped through the cracks a little. Sure they did mention it in mailouts alongside lists and lists of other names, and yeah they made a video for one of the (weaker) tracks on the album which is actually a remix and doesn't really do the original much justice, never mind the album itself. Yeah I'm a little bitter that most people will be talking about Grizzly Bear or the new Bibio album when Mark Pritchards best work to date goes ignored on the shelf. I'm aware a lot of people have heard or enjoy the record and it would never be a massive sell but it really should be. Pritchards managed to get the cross between Detroit sound and hip hop/bass influences nigh on perfect with Machines and the album deserves a lot more acclaim than its likely to get.

    6

    Tristeza
    Fate Unfolds
Tristeza have to be the most consistent band in my opinion. 6 albums & 3 EP's later they are still releasing solid instrumental post rock music that manages to sway and differentiate between itself quite admirably. Whilst they may not be as prolific lately as they were in earlier years Fate Unfolds is no less an album than any before, and they have managed to entwine their darker electronic sounds with their previously more upbeat guitar based work. Luckily for me this was only released at the start of the month alongside a 26 track cassette I am awaiting from the USA with studio tracks from the last 3 years to keep me going until the next release, which is hopefully sooner than it has taken for Fate Unfolds.

    5

    The Field
    Yesterday & Today
Whilst From here to Sublime was lauded generally by the alternative media and filled up more end of year lists than that Twilight crap fills kids christmas lists nowadays, Yesterday & Today has been glaringly absent this time around I have noticed. Axel's second offering thinks much more outside of the box than his previous work and the tracks whilst long and few manage to venture so much further than before and by the time the tracks have peaked they have a lot more purpose than the general repitition that I was used to. The use of instruments also distinguish the sound much better and as much as I adore this album it also leads me to be excited to where his sound will develop to next.

    4

    Ben Klock
    One
I wish I could go to the Berghain in Berlin, infact its on my short list of places I must go. Between Shed's amazing debut last year, Marcel Dettmann's continual 12" output and the Planetary Assault System album you already have an idea of the groundbreaking techno music being played but all of those pale in comparison to Berghain resident Klock's debut album "One" which is quite simply the best techno album I've heard in quite some time. It definately was not an easy album to get into but once you're there you are rewarded by good flowing tracks, emotion, ambience and suspense. The album doesn't rock itself too hard at any point really but it doesn't need to, the sound is deep and the tracks all stand out. Phenomenal

    3

    Keaver & Brause
    The Middle Way
I didn't have a clue who Keaver & Brause were at the start of the year and I'm still a bit in the shadows as different reports lead to different analysis. I think its one guy called Tom Keaver, or Tom Brause, or Tom completely different name. I'll just call him Tom. Tom's first album, a hip hop influenced beats instrumental beats album on littleknown dealmaker records is a little hard for me to some up into words especially. Hip hop has skewed over into electronic territory more and more over the years with artists influenced by Dilla doing new things and taking the sound further. I don't have much knowledge on hip hop as a whole, or even if its accurate describing Keaver in such a way but the influence is there, along with those such as BoC et all. The Middle Way is laden with samples too, and while the whole thing is a bit mish mash at first it does come more cohesive and always fun and enjoyable.

    2

    Clark
    Totems Flare
Chris Clark has probably been my favorite artist for a few years now. Body Riddle is my favorite work of music, I've seen him live several times and even met him in a state of ecstasy (literally, poor guy) so I was waiting for this album for a long time and it didn't disappoint. Apprehensive of vocals, it manages to work a lot better than for example Tim Exile's newer work and doesn't take away any of the charm from the music. The most noticeable thing for me with Totems Flare was the amount going on in each track. Every time you listen you find new layers of sounds you hadn't quite noticed before and the purpose of certain parts, the upheavel of a track to quickly shimmy into something totally different without ever going overboard. Clark's clearly spent a lot of time taking his music further forward although if you compare this album to say Clarence Park you can still see similarities. I'm not sure what he'll do next but I'll be waiting with baited breath.

    Fever Ray
    Fever Ray
And I don't even like the Knife so much! Well they're ok but none of their work comes close to this. Quite suprised to see media as diverse as Pitchfork, the Guardian, RA & more to list this album so high in their lists but it obviously goes to show what a record this is, probably timeless. I don't remember at any point where I fell hopelessly in love but I do know that I probably listen to this album more than I do any other this year still. I'm still taken aback by how powerful the vocals are, and they are really something else which the live record also shows. While the vocals are so incredibly diverse and haunting the sombre instrumentation that goes with it never oversteers tracks or controls them, her voice manages to capture the moods perfectly and the music follows. I hate describing music, if you haven't heard this album get it sorted. Again, Timeless.

Apologies for the incoherency towards the end but I've been writing this over the course of 3 hours and cannot be arsed any longer. I'll edit it further more later!
