Throwing Muses are an alternative rock band formed in 1981 in Newport, Rhode Island, that toured and recorded extensively until 1997, when its members began concentrating more on other projects. The group was originally fronted by two lead singers, Kristin Hersh and Tanya Donelly, who both wrote the group’s songs. Throwing Muses are known for performing music with shifting tempos, creative chord progressions, unorthodox song structures, and surreal lyrics.
The group was set apart from other contemporary acts by Hersh’s stark, candid writing style; Donelly’s pop stylings and vocal harmonies; and David Narcizo’s unusual drumming techniques eschewing use of cymbals. Hersh’s hallucinatory, febrile songs occasionally touched on the subject of mental illness, more often drawing portraits of characters from daily life or addressing relationships.

I've listened to all of their albums in their entirety but for "Red Heaven" and all I can say is that Kristen Hersh is wicked awesome. I mean that guttural banshee wail in "Say Goodbye" at the 2:36 mark is pretty damn phenomenal. Lotta respect for the woman.

Only 64k listeners really is criminal. How did they not quite take off. "University" got to number 10 in UK after all (after "Red Heaven" number 13). I presumed that they were really popular in the US, turns out not? Anyway, i've fallen for them again recently and will get more of their albums.

got my copy of ANTHOLOGY today and it's worth it for the packaging alone!!! SO beautiful! But the songs sound so fresh and the bonus cd of rarities and b-sides just makes me giddy!
