This amazing piece is best heard live, with the eight choirs (of five parts each) spaced around the audience. The music flows from part to part and from choir to choir, and, at one point form each side, one after the other. This is a piece which needs to be stage-managed. Tallis also manages to make the sudden silences shocking. Even more shocking is the musical "clash" towards the end as one soprano line falls and near-passes another; such dischord was seen as "the Devil's work" at the time and was, reportedly, punishable by threat of death on much of the Continent. Truly innovative and mid-Tudor.

two things I love, latin sung, or chanted, and Tomas Tallis. Of course, I could say the same thing of all these church composers.

My laptop seems rather inadequate with which to listen to this magnificent work.

There could be diferent versions streaming from here. Certainly the album covers listed don't all tie up. There are plenty of versions of this attributed to certain choirs -if you want to find the one you prefer try the tag : http://www.last.fm/tag/spem%20in%20alium

Surely TT would be delighted to know that his sublime music has not only survived over 400 years, but is much appreciated still by many people.....................? And I fully agree with Oppressotron's shout below.....................

Recently I had the perfect experience in a church in my hometown. It was the most intense experience of music that I've ever had.

Yes my friends... This is about as close to joining the heavenly choir as you're going to get without actually fully making that trip. Who needs meds to lower your blood pressure when you have music like this?
