So I had some time to kill at the Eaton Centre on Tuesday night and I ducked into the HMV, which has apparently stopped being a record store. Now, I know that times are tough and carrying a huge back-catalogue inventory is expensive, but damn... only about a third of the floor space is actually devoted to music, and what is available is only there by chance. I looked for David Sylvian and found exactly nothing, but fair enough... he's not on a major label and he hasn't exactly released much lately. How about the Thomas Dolby remasters that came out last month, then? Nope, there'll be none of that, either. Pet Shop Boys? Their twenty-ish-album career apparently needn't be represented by anything more than "Yes" and one of the "Disco" compilations. Duran Duran? The remastered "Rio" that came out last month and a misfiled copy of Nine Inch Nails' "Ghosts I-IV". A couple of shelves further down the aisle, though, there was an overpriced Swamp Rats best-of... a sure seller if I've ever seen one.

So how are they making their money these days? (NOTE: They're not. At 5:15 on a Tuesday afternoon, I was the only customer in the store.) By selling frickin' video games and DVDs, essentially putting themselves into competition with the electronics stores and big-box retailers who use exactly those items as loss-leaders to get your puffy ass into their shops, that's how. Good plan, HMV! Especially when your pricing strategy is seemingly to set your sticker guns at random: I can't imagine that prices vary wildly from distributor to distributor, but it somehow makes sense to tag a bare-bones disc of "Beyond the Valley of the Dolls" at $45 (oh, wait... it comes in a slipcase! I get it now!) while the entire run of those dire "Ocean's Eleven" remakes/what-have-yous gets packaged together for twelve bucks? At the very least, their inventory of movies was better than their selection of music: there was a significant chunk of the Blue Underground catalogue in the racks for not-ridiculous prices, and I was happy to take a twenty-dollar copy of "The Blood Spattered Bride" home. Still, it would be nice if they could figure out what they're actually in the business of selling and then concentrate on doing it well, 'cause that store is an embarrassment right now and a pale shadow of what it was ten years ago.
