  • 2009 Show Reviews

    Nov 22 2009, 7h55 por navitatl

I thought I'd compile all the shows I've seen this year into one convenient post, and rate them all.
    How I rate:
0 - Awful, walked out or considered walking out
1 - Not really enjoyable or interesting, but not really "bad"
2 - Decent, worth the money.
    3 - Very cool show
4 - Extremely awesome and would recommend for anyone
5 - Life-changingly good, a concert I'll remember for as long as I have memory

Aranis - 2 - Great skills and some decent compositions.
Charles Hayward - 2 - From This Heat. Weird show with a piano song and some solo drumming with synthesizers.
Cheer-Accident - 4 - Pure badass. This group of weirdos knows how to rock.
Combat Astronomy - 0 - This show made no sense to me. It was extremely long, slow in all the wrong places. Poor concept. I've heard they're good on CD but after that concert I don't know if I can give them another chance.
    The Cranberries - 1 - Fairly uninspiring.
dd/mm/yyyy - 3 - Really innovative band, was a pleasure to see live
DOPE BODY - 2 - Local band, they had a couple really good groovy moments.
Dry Season - 0 - Fat singer with such an annoying voice, seemed to hate the other band members and bickered with them the entire time.
Electric Epic - 3 - Groovy instrumental band with the bassist from Magma, and a skilled sax player.
Griffin House - 1 - Seems like a cool guy. He plays acoustic songs, borderline political lyrics. Not interested.
Guapo - 4 - Saw a few (5?) mini-concerts of them attempting some sound spacialization experiments. I don't know how well the experiments worked but the band kicked ass.
    Isthmus - 2 - They've got a lot of potential.
Jana Hunter - 1 - Some decent grooves but pretty boring overall.
Koenjihyakkei - 5 - The best show I've ever seen. Technically perfect, highly engaging. So much fun!
Magma - 5 - It's Magma, of course it was perfect.
Mahogany Frog - 3 - I was pleasantly surprised by this band.
    Melt-Banana - 4 - A lot of fun.
The Muffins - 3 - Badass group, great fretless bass player!
Oaxacan - 2 - Very atmospheric and eerie, I wouldn't sit down and listen to a CD of them though. The girl's wails got old quick.
    Present - 4 -
Sir Richard Bishop - 4 - From Sun City Girls. This guy knows his way around the guitar, and the new Freak of Araby material is very interesting (but better live than on CD IMO)
    Univers Zero - 4 -
Yolk - 3 - Cool psychedelic band, the singer did some crazy stuff with her vocals that other people got tired of, but I thought it was fun.

    Analysis

From these charts, the change of listening habits is even more evident. The amount of albums listened has increased all the time but the portion of top 20 albums from all these has been declining. It is also worth nothing that White Light From the Mouth of Infinity by Swans has been in top 20 for three years. It's not a surprise though, because it's clearly my alltime number one album. Not just statistically speaking; it's definitely my favourite album of recent years.

  • dälek, Corsica Studios, 11 October 2009

    Out 13 2009, 1h05 por onbarton

Sun 11 Oct – dälek, Action Beat, Charles Hayward

a gig review in three movements.

    Prologue

I arrive at Corsica Studios at 7.30pm.

    What time are dälek on?
    10pm.
    And Charles Hayward?
9pm, although he might be on earlier because the first band haven't turned up.
    Who were the first band?
    Action Beat.
...well, I'd never heard of them, so probably no big loss there.

    Act One Action Beat

How late it was, how late... Hayward's pacing the floor wondering if he's about to be asked to play now or whether he waits, but the frat boys burst in as a horde carrying equipment. Drums come in. More drums come in. More drums come in. The drums keep coming... it's lucky they have so many hands with all this kit, but where exactly are they going to put it? Corisca is no arena and the stage is already taken up with Hayward's own doubleplus drum kit.

The floor, it's the only place.

It's then I realise that this is no Floydie bloated über drum kit... it's mutliples. Things are looking up... percussion gets me every time. Two kits are set, three, four... meanwhile guitars are coming out... two, three, four with the bass... and you realise that these aren't all helpers, they're actually all in the band... there's so much kit and so many of them they almost take up the entire room. Chaos reigns as leads are plugged in, cymbals are screwed on and strings are tuned... they all look incredibly pissed off. Before they even look close to finishing setting up properly one pipes up...

"Our equipment's stuck in Norway, we managed to get this stuff from somewhere... sorry we're late... fucking go!"

Ready or not. Go. It's an understatement as the most ridiculously intense noise and frantic contorting ensues. I'm squeezed at the front with a couple of other lucky people - most being forced to the corridor and bar - and you can't help but be caught up in the madness... literally... as they throw themselves around you. The guitarists twist and gyrate with venom... they still look incredibly pissed off and with only a guitar to take it out on, they do. The drummers pound in unison, out of unison... it's all a wonderfully violent mess.

Now I've heard them... it would have been a loss if they hadn't made it.

    Act Two Charles Hayward

Hayward is like Cunnigham's Monkey Drummer... it doesn't seem possible that one person, one thing, can do so much at the same time and not be a hideous creation from a lab given extra limbs... but he does. He drums like a daemon on a kit that would be insultingly showy if it wasn't really used... but it is used... it's all used, every bit of it. On top of this he layers sounds... starts and stops loops, noises, sirens, bells... all at the same time and all with two hands and two feet. And he sings. Even if I weren't a fan of This Heat I'd be in love with this guy... but I am and This Heat were an immense band and I fucking love this guy.

    Act Three dälek

The last time I saw dälek there were four of them... a rocker type guitarist with long straggly hair, a geeky guy with a laptop, the tat'd beat man and the massive front guy. I always wondered how that group of people came to be and somehow couldn't quite picture them all down the pub together. Maybe they couldn't either because gone is the rocker and gone is the geek.

But they lose nothing in keeping it a duo for live performances... the soundscape is as complex and heavy as ever and dälek are noisy, really noisy. I like hip hop and I like noise... the two are not exactly natural bedfellows, but they work it so well... they balance the beat and the noise perfectly. Live, the vocals get lost a little in the mix, but that's understandable... levelling this out must be a nightmare... and it doesn't detract from the experience. Buy a record and listen to it at home and it will make even more sense...

"Who out there likes hip hop?
    This is my culture.
    These are my words.
    This is my life."

    Amen.

    Epilogue

    I went home, happy.

  • New band "Infinite Birth"

    Jul 5 2009, 22h47 por magentaray

Our new band Infinite Birth has finally decided on a name and a bloody good one it is too! . We are pretty psychedelic and noise y. We are a bit less dark than my other band Blood Moon.

I would associate Infinite Birth with such bands as Sunburned Hand of the Man , Jackie-O Motherfucker , Can , Faust , Eternal Tapestry , Pram , Broadcast , Stereolab . We are, however a bit heavier and darker than most of the bands I've mentioned, and we have a raw punk or post-punk edge, as with Blood Moon . Artists like The Fall , Joy Division , Wire and This Heat are also a big influence on our sound. We are all big Sonic Youth lovers too and it shows...

I hope you'll have a listen and see what you think...
