Dez 28 2013, 7h15 por ThePaintedGreySo, this year was... ok, in regards to new music. Some disappointing releases, which is unfortunate especially coming off the string of awesome releases that were in the previous year or two. Anyway, it was at least decent enough with some nice surprises here and there.
What follows consists of a bunch of personal last.fm statistics for the year, as well as my lists and thoughts on the music released in 2013.
My list of 2013 albums rated in (relative) order.
My Last.fm Artist Chart for 2013:

12. Blind Guardian (160 plays)

Nov 18 2012, 20h03 por Verbum-Lux10. Divinefire – Farewell
While they don’t quite reach the heights of Into a New Dimension (see below), Divinefire’s fourth effort still deserves a place on this list. With one exception, this doesn’t do anything other Divinefire albums don’t do, it just does these things really, really well. The aforementioned exception, Heal Me, is definitely worth noting. It’s a very cool progressive metal epic that I consider their finest moment. I wish they would do more stuff along that line.
9. Becoming the Archetype – Dichotomy
BTA achieve true greatness with their third release. While they were good before, most the songs just weren’t that memorable. Not so here. They stepped up their game in every way and fulfill the promise shown on the previous two albums. So many of their best songs are on this one. Their version of How Great Thou Art makes me wish they did more renditions of classic hymns, and End of the Age is my favorite song about the end of the world.

Jan 19 2012, 7h50 por ZadionApocalayaThis is the first year I really tried to keep up with releases, but it turns out I picked a bad year for that. As I said in my top songs list, 2011 sucked for albums. It was a major release year - a ton of prominent artists released a new album this last year, and almost all of them were disappointments on some level... including ones that are actually making this list. That is what I find most disappointing - that my top 10 list has albums that were, in general, disappointing. It was also a great year for me though, in that I discovered artists I wouldn't have otherwise. Several of those are making this list as well. What's most important though is that I discovered artists this year that didn't release anything new. This proves that, with all the disappointment, there is always great stuff already out which must be heard!
Now, on with the list....
Jan 16 2012, 23h38 por ZadionApocalayaWell, 2011 kind of sucked as far as albums go, but there was a ton of stand-out tracks even on albums that, on the whole, were not very good. Picking out just ten is a difficulty, but I managed to do so. Note that there's only one song per album, otherwise the entire list would be filled by two or three albums I really loved. ;)
#10: "C'est la Vie" - Protest the Hero
I was massively disappointed with Scurrilous. Seriously, almost every part of it was just bad. Not "C'est la Vie" though - nope, this song has everything that made me love songs like "Sequoia Throne" and "No Stars Over Bethlehem." Crazy riffs, poppy melody, and insightful, thought-provoking lyrics by Arif Mirabdolbaghi (unlike the rest of the album).
#9: "The Drowning Age" - Draconian
I kind of dislike 99% of doom metal and doom metal related artists. It's way too slow for me. …

Dez 28 2011, 18h30 por Meat_WolfMoonsorrow — Varjoina kuljemme kuolleiden maassa (Epic Folk/Pagan Metal)
A special record with no rating. Huge but not complex, heavy and dirty like tidal waves and the splinters left after their passing, being not the best effort of Moonsorrow it contains an incredible masterpiece — Huuto. Back to "no rating" issue, though in terms of music it might be not stellar, this album simply was my soundtrack for this year. And since I rate music, not personal experience, it's out of the list but keeps its deserved place.
1. Insomnium — One for Sorrow (Melodic Death Metal) (10/10)
A bolt out of the blue. From just a good band with a skill to blend oldschool melodeath elements with contemporary spirit and fresh melodies in their own way Insomnium now jump straight to the elite. Unbelievable musicianship, breathtaking craft of melody-making…

Dez 24 2011, 4h30 por dirtclawThe year 2011, for music at least, kicked some serious ass. Here's twenty six albums from 2011 that I've enjoyed. In alphabetical order. Highly recommended to anyone who reads this.
But first, my top 5 albums from 2010, after having an extra years worth of time to fully digest them.
1) Seventh Wonder - The Great Escape
2) Pain of Salvation - Road Salt One
3) Soilwork - The Panic Broadcast
4) Blind Guardian - At the Edge of Time
5) Kamelot - Poetry for the Poisoned
Amaranthe - Amaranthe: An almost sickeningly catchy album from the Swedish power/melodic death metal outfit Amaranthe. Every single freaking song stays in your head. EVERY. SINGLE. ONE.
Cormorant - Dwellings: The independently-released 2nd album from San Francisco's progressive death / tiberian ass bastard folk metallers Cormorant should intrigue you enough musically to keep you along for the ride, and will no doubt leave you longing for more. That's what Metazoa is for, though!
