Theatre of Tragedy é uma renomada banda da cidade de Stavanger, Noruega. Uma das precursoras do Gothic Metal sinfônico, adicionado do formato de duetos vocálicos guturais e soprano embora musicalmente seus primeiros álbuns sejam classificados como Doom Metal. Quase não há bandas que tocam o denominado Gothic Metal com tal perfeição e originalidade que essa banda executa. Já em 1995, eles lançam o seu primeiro álbum, homônimo, considerado um clássico do estilo, e rapidamente a banda começa a ter uma maior atenção da mídia. Pode-se dizer que Theatre of Tragedy foi a inventora do extremo contraste entre os vocais guturais masculinos e os angelicais vocais femininos. A banda também foi responsável por criar um estilo totalmente novo, sem esquecer das belas canções com toques deprimentes e românticas feitas pelo vocalista Raymond I. Rohonyi, escritas em Inglês Antigo. Muitas outras bandas foram influenciadas pelas suas músicas.

O Segundo Álbum Velvet Darkness They Fear (lançado em 1996), logo se tornou um dos mais prósperos álbuns do estilo Gothic Metal do mundo.
