There is a strong sense of cohesion, true, but I don't think most of the songs are good enough for a Velvet Underground album. If I want to hear Lou Reed as a songwriter, I'll listen to his solo works, which are often substantially better than this album, and if I want to hear some interesting music from him, I'll listen to the first two Velvet Underground albums. I just don't see the appeal this one has.

The Murder Mystery is definitely the highlight, but I wouldn't say the rest of the album is to be disregarded. It works pretty well as a whole.

It's true, anyway, that The Murder Mystery is the only great moment on this album. There are some okay songs, but they're ultimately just fluffy nonsense, certain to underwhelm somebody expecting an album of VU & Nico or White Light/White Heat calibre. And it has After Hours, which is unlistenable.

Also you should look up the word "pretentious." You were basically accusing him of only /pretending/ to dislike every song on the album except Murder Mystery, which I doubt you are in the slightest position to know.

It's their best, after the debut : " That's The Story Of My Life" is sub-par but the rest is fantastic. "The gift" was boring but "The Murder Mystery" really hits me. No need to talk about the rest : simply classics after classics. Be sure you pick up the closet mix version

VU & Nico and White Light/White Heat may have been more innovative, and had great songs on each album, but I feel like this one is really a few notches above their two earlier ones. Am I the only one who thought Cale went a little viola heavy on the first album? I hate to say it, but this is a nicer sounding album without him.
