Play 10 songs at random, part 3- The Fugs and in case it wasn't completely obvious,…
Dez 10 2009, 20h33 por andomck
1. Tyvek- Stop Start
I forget that I like Tyvek. I always get 'em confused with The Terrible Twos, who I'm not too stoked on. Tyvek are pretty noisy themselves, but don't reek too much of hipster irony like those other guys.
2. The Fugs- Ah Sunflower Waery of Time
The Fugs are what hippies should've been. This is just as raw as any good punk, but y'know, they sing about flowers. Instead shit got watered down like always.
3. The Saints- This Perfect Day
I don't want to say anything cliche about 'em, but they're rad as hell. Being one of the originators of punk, they're punk, and playing mostly garage rock influenced music, they're also garage rock. So, I think that's as good as any reason to say they're the fist garage punk band.
4. The Boys- Sick on You
Like all good punk love songs, you gotta equate love with something gross. Sometimes it comes in spurts. Other times it gets confused as hatred. Here it's just a type of nausea. In the right situations, this is pretty much how it feels.
5. The Fugs- How Sweet I Roamed From Field To Field
The Fugs, again. They're doing an old school country thing here. Almost like The Carter Family or Jimmie Rodgers. I don't listen to this enough!
6. Lightning Beat-Man- Honey Baby Blues
I once drove from st. louis to new york city to see him play with his band The Monsters at CBGB's. I'm glad I did, since he lives in switzerland and I imagine doesn't come here too often.
7. ZZ Top- Hot, Blue, and Righteous
Not their best, but y'know, not bad. It makes me feel like I'm in some 80's movie in some warehouse loft type apartment. Maybe across town there's my girl in a cross cut scene. Both of us have a look of yearning on our faces. For some reason fate, or possibly our own stupidity, won't let us be together, although we really want it. So bad. It hurts.
8. Thee Oh Sees- You Oughta Go Home
I only really like these guys when they play old school style rock 'n' roll and this ain't it. To be honest, those songs that I do like might not even be good enough to keep any of it. In fact, I think I'm just gonna go ahead and delete all of it. This sucks. Skip.
9. T-Bone Walker- Evil Hearted Woman
"How can you be so evil, baby?" blues with a jazz feeling. There's millions of songs like this. Doesn't mean it's not good, but you can just imagine what it sounds like. It's got a slow burn feel. There's a saxophone playing most of the melody. If there's a scale for blues going from raw to not so raw, this'd be on the not so raw side.
10. The Jaguars- It's Gonna Be Alright
Fuck, yeah! From Back From the Grave Vol. 5. Good 60's fuzz and crunch. Simple primal drums. This is what makes me happy. Along the lines of The Sonics or The Wailers. More punky than psychy, but they sound like they could've reversed that the more they learned to play. -

Way Out West 2008. Gothenburg, August 8
When me and my girlfriend had seen Roky Erickson for the first time last winter I told her "Now we have seen 4 of the greatest 60's/early 70's garage bands, Roky, The Stooges, MC5 and New York Dolls... it's only The Sonics left to make the list complete". At that time I didn't even know the Sonics were playing again. When I heard that they were going to play the Way Out West festival I was very surprised. If someone would have told me that I was going to see any of those bands 5 years ago I would have thought they were joking...

The Sonics
In 1964-65 when The Sonics released their first records they were way ahead of their time, the music was raw, aggressive and distorted. With songs like
Psycho,
The Witch,
Strychnine,
The Hustler and
Boss Hoss and Jerry Roslie's wild screams they pretty much invented punk rock 12 years too early.
But the question was if they could recreate all that energy 40 years later... They still had most of the energy and the screams were still there. They played most of the songs from their two first albums from 1966, the songs I mentioned earlier and their cool covers of
Have Love Will Travel,
Money,
Walking the Dog and a few rock n' roll standards. All in all it was a great show, they seemed to be having lots of fun and happy to be playing festivals were most people wasn't even born when they started out. They even joked about how they used to party with the audience parents back in the day...

Grinderman
Next up was Grinderman. I have seen Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds a couple of times before and was looking forward to see Nick Cave make noise with Grinderman. I think the Grinderman album is the best thing Nick has released in years. Like the album, the concert was noisy and aggressive reminding more of Cave's earlier band The Birthday Party and his first solo albums than the latter day Bad Seeds albums. The only downside was since they have only released one album they played every song from it and not all songs are as great as Depth Charge Ethel, Set Me Free, Electric Alice, Honey Bee and Man In The Moon... but Nick made up for the lesser songs by being the great frontman he is.

Nick Cave - Grinderman
They also played the Bad Seeds classic
Tupelo and the new song Dream that sounded very good too. It would have been very cool to see them do a couple of old Birthday Party songs like Nick the Stripper or Release the Bats and
From Her To Eternity or Saint Huck from his first solo album... Another great show.
I would love to see Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds again some time soon too, it was 2001 or 2002 the last time and it was one of the best concerts I've seen...

Broder Daniel
To end the night Broder Daniel played their last show ever as a tribute to their guitar player Anders Göthberg who passed away earlier this year. It was a very emotional concert experience even if I have seen better BD shows musically. I hadn't listened that much to them the last year or so and had almost forgot how much I love them. To be honest few bands/artist affect me like BD, Henrik Berggren wear his heart on his sleeve and write such simple, powerful and honest lyrics. I found myself standing with my arm in the air and singing along to every word...

Henrik Berggren - Broder Daniel
Some of the highlights were
Sorrow,
Work, the rarity
Lemon,
I'll Be Gone, What's Good,
Shoreline,
Old in Just One Day and of course
When We Were Winning... and the all new song Hold On To Your Dreams was great too. The only song I really missed from the set was
Luke Skywalker... and it would have been great to hear the long acoustic version of When We Were Winning live atleast once before they quit.
It was completely, completely wonderful and a worthy ending to one of the best and most important swedish bands ever. Along with Bruce Springsteen and Roky Erickson this was the best concert of the summer for me.

Set 26 2009, 17h44 por andomck
1. Lee Dorsey- Love Lotsa Lovin'
Lee Dorsey is a smooth criminal. He testifies the gospel of mackin' 'n' smackin'. Uh, yeah... that's it. He's telling you what he needs and gets his point across fairly well. I'm pretty sure he's talking to a specific female, but for some reason he addresses all of us as well. Almost as if not her, someone else will do. It's all a number's game, folks.
2. The Gore Gore Girls- Atlanta
atlanta's a cool town, I think. Never been myself. A lotta good bands come from there, though. The Black Lips, The Lids, Mastodon, Gaye Blades, The Carbonas, et al. I'm assuming the Gore Gore Girls are aware of at least some of this.
3. The Replacements- Seen Your Video
Videos were a big deal in the 80's, less of a deal in the 90's but still important, and now in the age of youtube and camera phones anybody can make them. This is from that first, golden age of the music video. The Replacements are undoubtedly trying to make a statement here. It's hard to tell what, however, since the song is an near instrumental. They don't want to know something. This much is clear.
4. The Sonics- Psycho (live)
The template for most modern garage bands. These guys worshipped at the altar of Little Richard until the british invasion came along and added The Kinks and The Yardbirds to their holy trinity.
5. The Strange Boys- Sugar Pie Honey Bunch
This guy's voice is awesome. I mean, does he hit all the notes? Not really, but he makes up for it with feeling, which is what most blues legends did. If I made a mix for my parents, this would probably be on it, along with the Reigning Sound.
6. Tom Waits- Chocolate Jesus
There was this cable access TV show in st. louis when I was a teenager called "Black Jesus." This always pops into my head when I hear this song. The guy'd go around and interview people on the street in a non-politically correct way, but it wasn't like he was playing the role of a shock jock either. Everything about his persona was genuine from the jehri curl down. Tom Waits is singing about candy himself, but you smell where I'm going with this. Mule Variations is such a good album.
7. The Feederz- Bionic Girl
The Feederz were the first hardcore band, or at least the first one to put out an album. Don't believe me? This came out in either '78 or '79. Listen to it. The anger. The speed. It's the first. The proof is on the sleeve.
8. Cheap Trick- Dream Police
What if there were a dream police? Obviously their uniforms would be all white, and they would be split between half 70's long haired studly dreamboats and half quirky people, half of them equipped with a double necked guitar. This last fourth would be the riot squad. In a perfect power pop world. Apparently perfect power pop worlds have fascist undertones.
9. Johnny Powers- Trouble
Johnny Powers covering Elvis Presley's "Trouble." It's not as good as the original, but that's not to say it's subpar. It just doesn't have one of the greatest rock 'n' roll vocal stylists of all time singing it.
10.The Million Dollar Quartet- That's My Desire
This song does, although it's Jerry Lee Lewis whose doing the singing. It was recorded in the presence of Elvis, though, so maybe he's featured in a cough in the background or something. -
