  • Godne Polecenia #6 - The Seatbelts (シートベルツ)

    Out 2 2009, 17h30 por Killavus

Ostatni wpis był jakiś czas temu, warto by więc powrócić do wspaniałej tradycji pisania o godnych polecenia zespołach. Tym razem nic w klimatach metalu czy rocka i wywodzące się z kultury, którą osobiście uwielbiam. Mowa o The Seatbelts.

    Pozdrawiam.

  • I have shit I should be doing.

    Set 22 2009, 20h20 por adman5189

Name your top 10 artists of the last seven days played on last.fm:

    1. The Flaming Lips
    2. The Seatbelts
    3. Half Man Half Biscuit
    4. Lou Barlow
    5. Girls
    6. Carter the Unstoppable Sex Machine
    7. Times New Viking
    8. No Age
    9. Brian Eno
    10. Islands

Now answer the questions according to the numbers:

What was the first song you ever heard by 6?
    "The Road to Domestos"

What is your favourite album of 2?
I guess OST 1, but I'm partial to most of the stuff

What is your favourite lyric that 4 has sung?
    "WHYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY
    WHYYYYYYYYY DON'T YOU LIKE MEEEEEEEEEEEEEE?!?!"
(Not a Barlow solo track and I guess the man didn't SING it, but it still fucking counts.)

How many times have you seen 5 live?
    None, but they're young.

What is your favorite song by 7?
"No Time, No Hope." Actually, that's the only song of theirs I like.

What is a good memory you have involving the music of 10?
Seeing them play in Cleveland with my Dad a couple years ago, or first listening to "Swans (Life After Death)" in Luke's car on the way back from Best Buy and being thoroughly impressed with what I heard.

Is there a song of 3 that makes you sad?
    Ya picked the wrong artist.

What is your favorite lyric that 2 has sung?
Haven't paid too much attention. I like the instrumentals better.

What is your favorite song by 9?
    "Third Uncle"

How did you get into 3?
I think I read somewhere that they were like a precursor to Art Brut and it piqued my interest. Goddamn what a wonderful find that was.

What was the first song you heard by 1?
Good question. Could've been "She Don't Use Jelly," could've been "The Spiderbite Song" for some reason, could've even been "Do You Realize??" although I'm not sure if that song came out before or after I'd first heard of the Lips.

What is your favorite song by 4?
    "My Surrender"

How many time have you seen 9 live?
    Never.

What is a good memory you have involving 2?
Being blown away by the altissimo sax notes at the end of "Tank!" for the first time way back when. Holy balls.

Is there a song of 8 that makes you sad?
No. It's No Age. Their stuff is pretty nice and heavy.

What is your favorite album of 5?
    They only have one.

What is your favorite lyric that 3 has sung?
"Is you child hyperactive or is he perhaps a twat
Sometimes I like to watch wave rage down at Fistral beach
Last Ash Wednesday I had tantric sex and it was shit
Next Ash Wednesday I might strive to lick my elbow"
    - From "Surging Out of Convalescence"

What is your favorite song of 1?
So many to choose from... "Moth in the Incubator," "The Gash," "Pompeii Am Gotterdammerung," "Silver Trembling Hands"...

What is your favorite song of 10?
    Probably "The Arm"

How many times have you seen 8 live?
    Once. So loud. So good.

What is your favorite album of 1?
"The Soft Bulletin," but I tell ya, "Embryonic" is getting there. We'll see if the last two tracks seal the deal or not.

What is a great memory you have considering 9?
John Palmer telling me to go listen to "Third Uncle" after I heard it in a promo for his show.

What was the first song you heard by 8?
Probably "Eraser" like the rest of the world, because I don't know shit.

What is your favorite cover by 3?
Never heard them cover anything outside of their delightfully skewed versions of old traditional tunes.

Name your top 10 artists of the last seven days played on last.fm:

    1. The Seatbelts
    2. Carpenters
    3. R.E.M.
    4. Vivian Girls
    5. James Chance
    6. Daft Punk
    7. Atlas Sound
    8. Adorable
    9. SOIL & "PIMP" Sessions
    10. Deerhunter

Now answer the questions according to the numbers:

What was the first song you ever heard by 6?
Something on Discovery, probably "One More Time" or "Aerodynamic."

What is your favourite album of 2?
    Technically a compilation - The Singles: 1969-1973

What is your favourite lyric that 4 has sung?
From "Where Do You Run To:"
"It's alright, just leave the light on
I will never ask you why
Once you've gone remains the question baby
    Where do you go?
Why do you leave me all alone?
Where do you run to baby?"
(more than one, I know - it's the whole song!)

How many times have you seen 5 live?
Never, but he's still performing, so hopefully someday!

What is your favorite song by 7?
"Walkabout" - the one with Noah Lennox/Panda Bear.

What is a good memory you have involving the music of 10?
I don't have a specific memory pertaining to Deerhunter. I just really love Cryptograms.

Is there a song of 3 that makes you sad?
It's really dependent on mood. Songs from Out of Time make me melancholy sometimes, particularly "Half a World Away" and "Belong."

What is your favorite lyric that 2 has sung?
    From "All We Know:"
"Let's take a lot of time to say
    I knew you well
    For only time
    Will tell so
    And love may grow
    For all we know"

What is your favorite song by 9?
I don't have a favorite yet because I just started listening to them. :|

How did you get into 3?
I didn't necessarily grow up with them, but it was one of those bands in my formative years that was always present. I vaguely remember Automatic for the People being released, but I was four years old then. I didn't really pay attention to R.E.M. until I was fifteen, when I listened to Document all the way through. I guess it went from there.

What was the first song you heard by 1?
That would have to be "Memory," since that's what the first episode of Cowboy Bebop opens with.

What is your favorite song by 4?
    I'm still not sure.

How many time have you seen 9 live?
    Never. D:

What is a good memory you have involving 2?
Just growing up in general. The Carpenters were something that my Mom always kept in the house. She wouldn't play them often, but she loved them anyway. I remember being seven years old and seeing an infomercial for their Love Songs compilation, and I absolutely loved the music.

Is there a song of 8 that makes you sad?
I have mixed feelings about all of Adorable's material. Against Perfection is a stellar album, but I associate it with my ex-boyfriend. Sometimes it makes me happy, sometimes it makes me sad, sometimes it turns into a clusterfuck of emotions. But I think the only song that still really gets me is "Have You Seen the Light."

What is your favorite album of 5?
Off White, which was under the James White and the Blacks name.

What is your favorite lyric that 3 has sung?
There are so many! No way I can pick a favorite.

What is your favorite song of 1?
    "Adieu" and "Dijurido" are tied.

What is your favorite song of 10?
I don't know if I'd settle on FAVORITE favorite, but I like the intro track to Cryptograms a lot.

How many times have you seen 8 live?
None. They're not even a band anymore. D:

What is your favorite album of 1?
Either Blue or Future Blues. But really, all their material is awesome.

What is a great memory you have considering 9?
None yet - again, just started listening to them.

What was the first song you heard by 8?
Uhhhhh I wanna say "Still Life," but it really could have been anything. My dad played both albums constantly when I was a kid.

What is your favorite cover by 3?
    "Femme Fatale," I guess.

  • Sunflower - Good British Jazzy Rock (Unsigned) - Updated

    Jan 14 2009, 19h45 por mellors-

Sunflower (If you didnt already guess from the title,) currently unsigned band from Leicester in the UK, so If you're a fan of quite laid back rock with a jazzy touch and catchy melodies, or imagine that'd be your cup of tea (English cliches ftw) then check them out at the below links. The vocals might take some getting used to, but once you do they work well and the band plays some tightly performed and well written tunes, evoking some nice atmosphere but with a good pop sensibility.

You can now find full track plays of 5 of their songs on an album of recordings from their first session a few months ago here:

And also 2 tracks they recorded for a local radio station, Demon FM.

    Live at Demon FM

There are other artists called Sunflower on that page, but only those recordings so far are the Leicester area group.

  • Insulting My Top 20

    Dez 26 2008, 23h46 por SaberMoon

    1. Bright Eyes - Conor, you are a bit whiny for my taste. You sound sort of like you haven't reached puberty yet. But other than that, I fucking love you to pieces. You are amazing, and most of the "bad" things I thought of were things that make you so great.

    2. Blink 182 - You broke up, and it sucks. Most of your songs don't have meaning for someone over the age of 18. And Tom, you are a douchebag.

    3. Jack's Mannequin - Most of your songs sound the same, and I'm not a huge fan of the new album in general. A couple songs are alright, but it was a disappointment to me. You never come to Colorado, and you were pretty boring live.

    4. Panic at the Disco: I kind of really want you off my top. You went from being irritating but unique to Beatles wannabes. You have your own right to change, I guess, but I feel the dramatics are for show.

    5. Forgive Durden: Oh geez...This is tough. Razia's Shadow took forever to come out (and I LOVE it). Uh...Your music video for Life Is Looking Up is odd. And Thomas, you seemed depressed when I met you.

    6. Mindless Self Indulgence: You are rude for the sake of being rude. Your lyrics don't have any depth, and most of your songs sound the same.

    7. ORANGE RANGE: Well, you're in Japan, so I don't really know how you are as people, or what a lot of your lyrics mean. Uh...you don't ever plan on coming to America. And it sucks.

    8. The Killers: Cocky as shit. Day and Age is kind of meh, as was Sawdust. I like your old stuff hella more.

    9. My Chemical Romance: You have won the hearts of every prepubescent girl ever. The Black Parade was kind of a lame concept, but somehow, I enjoy you. Total sellouts, but meh.

    10. Dr. Horrible's Sing Along Blog: Uh...there's not enough of you for everyone to enjoy. I want more!

    11. Nightmare of You: Not a fan of the new stuff you've released recently. I love the self titled. Also, you never go outside of NYC.

    12. Conor Oberst: I don't like some of the songs on the album, I guess. And, when making the album, you were gone for a hella long time.

    13. Something Corporate: I don't really know how you got so high on my top. I don't like you all that much. You remind me far too much of a couple of years ago, in a more bitter than sweet sort of way. You are practically dead, and Andrew probably will never revive you.

    14. the pillows: You are crazy Japanese stoners. Your videos are kind of frightening. Everyone loves you because of FLCL, but I actually like you for you. Most of your stuff sounds the same.

    15. I Hate Kate:You should have stayed small.

    16. BEAT CRUSADERS: A lot of your songs are alike. You don't have that much out. You are extremely far away.

    17. Jimmy Eat World: I don't remember ever listening to you that much, but maybe that's because your album is kind of a blur. None of your songs stick out that much in my mind.

18 The Seatbelts: You don't match any of my other tastes. You don't exist outside of Cowboy Bebop.

    19. Single File: I miss you when they played Zombies Ate My neighbors almost every day. You seem to have disappeared. I want you back!

    20. Motion City Soundtrack: I don't really think you're anything all that special. Some of your songs amuse me, but I don't love you like I used to.

    Something off Munia (The Tale).

    22. What is your favorite song by 16? The Seatbelts

Hmmm... either the opening theme of Cowboy Bebop, or the ending one. ;p in other words, Tank! or Real Folk Blues.

    23. What is the first song you ever heard by 47? Nick Cave

That'd be People Ain't No Good, on the Shrek 2 soundtrack, I think.

    24. What is your favorite album by 18? Greg Edmondson

The stuff he made for Firefly is awesome. Dunno about the rest...

    25. What is your favorite song by 21? Kult

I can never remember what they recorded as Kult and what Kazik sang solo, so I'll just skip this. He's basically awesome all over. ;p

  • “That Flawless Night Sky” or…

    Nov 19 2008, 18h34 por eyeofsaulot

Music Suitable to be the Soundtrack to Stargazing and Imagined Space Travel

Quoted from my previous journal of this nature:
With all of these “greatest *insert genre here*” lists being posted all over Last.fm, I thought I might try something a little different; something that would get people thinking about broadening their horizons, while still allowing them to hear the same kind of music they enjoy listening to, in terms of mood and tone.

These are all very atmospheric albums that convey to their listeners the imagery of the void of space, whether the lyrics (if there are any) actually reflect that imagery or not. These albums will instill a sense of darkness as well as enlightenment and you’ll find yourself answering the beckon call of those glimmering stars and planets…

On a late-night stroll, you come upon a soft, grassy hill. You decide to stop for a while and lie at the top of it, face up, arms comfortably placed behind your head. Before you is a perfectly clear night sky. There are no obscuring clouds or city lights, no bothersome company to distract you… You romantically feel there is nothing standing between you and the mystical beauty of the stars.

You visualize yourself piloting a shuttle through space with no real destination, celestial bodies passing you by. There is a strange assortment of noises coming from the anachronistic technological machinery all throughout the space vessel: harsh metallic sounds and banging noises, gears grinding, liquids bubbling, steam escaping, monotonous and repetitive beeps, bizarre transmissions coming from your radio.

You are trapped in solitude with no clue how to get home, but this is how you wanted it. Years spent on end aimlessly floating through the void, you realize you are not only exploring space, but yourself. Introspection dominates your endless waking hours and you’re left pondering the self for all eternity.

You rise to your feet just to get a closer look at that flawless night sky…
