  • the paragons - on the beach [1967]

• Men next door

    Abr 25 2008, 14h06 por matvey_andreyev

The history of the Man Next Door song

Русский вариант можно почитать на music.dirty.ru/comments/231811

Some tracks are available on last.fm. Ask me for a link concerning other tracks, if you want or search you know where.

The story was something like this:

1964: Garnet Mimms & The Enchanters recorded a song called A Quiet Place, lyrics of which have a lot in common with those of Man Next Door. Music is different. Possibly, John Holt heard it and paraphrased.

Around 1970: John Holt wrote the reggae song. He was a member of The Paragons (or Paragons) and the band has performed the song. Holt has left the group in 1970, so the song must have been written in 1970 or earlier. The song was like TocarMan Next Door (Got To Get Away).

It seems that Holt did not consider the song title seriously, preferring "Man Next Door" but letting other record producers write whatever shit they wanted on their records, like "A Quiet Place", "Got To Get Away" and other variants + their combinations.

1975: The song gets recorded with Horace Andy's voice, otherwise staying the same - a quiet place. Credited to horace andy & john holt. Horace will later cohort with Massive Attack.

1979: Dennis Brown records his own reggae version of TocarMan Next Door. He may have thought that there is not enough reggae-mannextdoors already. Well, seems he had much better studio equipment or what I have is a remastered track.

1980: The song got handled by girls - The Slits recorded their Man Next Door, showing us how they can not sing lower notes in the melody (perhaps, it is only because of the recording quality). In their hands Man Next Door became a dub-pop-rock-something song. Another new feature of their version was that they couldn't sing the word 'quiet', instead singing 'noisier' or 'noisy'. They perhaps thought that quiet is not cool. See it on youtube.

1981: Marijuana culture must have affected one record producer in 1981. His name is, perhaps, Lister Hewan Lowe. Perhaps, not :) That producer made a dub-version of Man Next Door, adding whole lotta one effect of edge-cutting stupidity, added these 'dub' triplet delays, simplified the drum loop, cut the vocals to almost senseless, and in the end, titling this song Indiana Jones! Damn why?! The song got released on a compilation called Raiders Of The Lost Dub.

1993: The same stupid dub by Lister Hewan Lowe got released again on another compilation called Time Warp Dub Clash - Old School vs. New School. This time joint smoke also had it's effect on compilation compilators, making them title the song TocarIndiana James (Man Next Door)! One folk may have been less smoked out because he added the real title in parentheses - may it be an evening star shining down upon him! Here on Last.fm stats aren't clean, we also have Indian James (Man Next Door) here.

Both these 1981 and 1993 Indianas were credited to The Paragons.

1993 again: the song got covered by Bim Sherman & Strange Parcels, who have titled it man next door (edit). It is a pop song. No reggae in the general sense of the word.

1997: The Slits released a disc of lives, on which a different Man Next Door can be found. It is better than their 1980 release - they sang some tender high notes, inserted a motive from Ennio Morricone's The Good, the Bad and the Ugly and behaved funnily on stage.

1998: A rather big group of serious studio people gathered and produced the all-time best, impossible to beat, no-reggae, no-dub, no-shit version of the song. They have released it under the Massive Attack brand.
This TocarMan Next Door featured Horace Andy, who, as we know, has rehearsed since 1975 :) Serious studio people have also spiced the track with staccatos from The Cure song 10:15 Saturday Night. You can listen to Massive Attack's Man Next Door on youtube mixed with S. Beckett's movie. You can see 10:15 Saturday Night on youtube, if you want.

1999: Self-proclaimed defenders of the real and authentic jamaican music emerged in the Netherlands. They are Rude Rich and the High Notes and they have covered the Man Next Door song, too. It is reggae and dub and skah thing again. Also, they've included a dub version of their cover - Dub Next Door which is a porridge of reverbs, "classic dub triplet delays", exciters and has completely senselessly cut pieces of vocals, of course, reverberated and delayed.

2000: Geyser - TocarMan Next Door (Promo) is a nothing-unusual slow dub track featuring some Man Next Door samples. I knew about this when writing this text but couldn't find it anywhere. Of course, I've found it here on last.fm minutes after posting the entry. Promo released in 2000, album in 2001(see geyser.de/gcd01.htm for some info).

2005: No, hold your horses. You can't get away without a Bill Laswell's enhanced reinterpretation dubificationalizationified version! He seems to have twiddled pitch, slided equalizer sliders, some phaser here and there, performed some amputations on vocals and released it as Horace Andy And The Aggrovators - A Noisy Place. He also found it funny to replace 'quiet' with 'noisy', as you can see. This track is neither enhanced nor reinterpreted - it is fucked up, good-for-nothing crap (sorry :) Bill Laswell can do much better but he didn't.

Missing: Another reggae version by George Nooks. Well, if you heard one reggae track, you've heard all :) Also missing are several dubs. I couldn't find and listen to them.

There's several, the most obvious being "TocarJunk Of The Hearts".

What is your favorite lyric that 25 has sung?
The entirety TocarNothing Better, really. But mostly "Your heart won't heal right if you keep tearing out the sutures". Same as the person from whom I stole the quiz; although I had to change the number on the question =p

What is your favorite song by 14?
    Probably Coldplay's "TocarDon't Panic".

How did you get in to 19?
My dad bought the Trojan Rocksteady Boxset back in 2005 and I listened to it over and over. I was hooked, it was so great.

What was the first song you heard by 21?
I really don't remember, they all sort of sound similar. And btw, this whole "what was the first song you heard" thing is really a bad question, I have terrible memory for things like that.

What is your favorite song by 4?
I guess it's either "Home Now" or "Total Hate" depending on my mood.

How many time have you seen 10 live?
Sadly never, she's too expensive. Damn it Alicia, why did you have to be so famous?!?

What is a good memory you have involving 13?
I told you I have bad memory. Sean Paul usually lends itself to a general hazy memory of a club. Hmmm... I guess that one Korean club way back in 2006. Good times.

Is there a song by 23 that makes you sad?
"TocarDo I Worry," that's pretty sad.

What is your favorite album of 15?
The one where the song "TocarDesde el puerto" is. Don't remember the name of it. Something like "Mientras tu dormias"... eh.

What is your favorite lyric that 9 has sung?
"Thanks for the memories, even though they weren't so great. See, he tastes like you; only sweeter."
    -Fall Out Boy

What is your favorite song by 8?
"TocarRiding High On A Windy Day"

What is your favorite song by 16?
    Probably "La Tortura".

How many times have you seen 5 live?
Never for the same reason as Alicia (above).

What is your favorite album by 12?
I donno, my sister ripped all these albums to my computer and I just listen to them randomly, I don't know what they are called. They're all pretty good though =)

What is a good memory you have involving 25?
Wow this song reminds me of my recent trip to Philadelphia where I played it over and over on Saturday night. In fact I am still addicted to it right now, it's on repeat on my mp3 player. Great memory. (See if it's a recent memory, it's okay)

What was the first song you heard by 18?
She had a famous first single off "Whoa Nelly". I wanna say "TocarTurn Off The Light"? Bleh... or that other single... "Shit on the Radio"... one of those I think.

What is your favorite song by 17?
    "TocarJessica".

What is your favorite album by 24?
The one with all the hits and alternative tracks which is the only one I have. lol.

  • A Brief History Of...The Development of Reggae

    Jan 29 2008, 4h00 por BadgerJohn31

The description and playlist below are from the weekly radio show (A Brief History Of…) that my friend and I host on WSUM 91.7fm Madison (the University of Wisconsin's radio station). We selected songs we felt were either historically important or just representative of each specific topic. Please comment if you feel we missed something or just to give your opinion. Remember, however, that we do this show in an hour (about 50 minutes of music). Track length is a major factor in our decisions (shorter is usually better). Thanks!

A Brief History of…The Development of Reggae follows the course of popular Jamaican music from imitations of American R&B around 1960 to Reggae’s international emergence as a fully developed musical form in 1972. The show analyzes what parts of Jamaican history and culture affected the stylistic and lyrical changes in the music. Among the topics covered are the psychological change caused by the island’s independence from Great Britain in 1962 and the impact of Rudeboy culture in the mid-60s. Of particular note in this show is a discussion of the impact of this Jamaican music culture on later African-American music, especially the origins of hip-hop.

Here's the playlist we used for this show:

    American R&B Origins:
This is the process by which we got the earliest forms of reggae:

Step 1: The Creation of the Sound System, which is essentially a portable dance party. Jamaicans began to demand to hear the most popular records coming out of the U.S. in the early 50s instead of their local live mento bands.

Step 2: After listening to enough American R&B (especially artists like Louis Jordan, Wynonie Harris, Fats Domino, and Bill Doggett), local bands started playing it themselves, but they still often incorporated the rhythms of traditional Jamaican folk music and mento.

TocarHey, Bartender by Laurel Aitken (1961). Aitken was known as "the Godfather of Ska." This song could almost have passed as American R&B, but it has just a little different feel to it.

Step 3: Sound System owners like Duke Reid and Clement Dodd began producing songs by the best local musicians. Their intent was still to be able to play the best records at the parties they hosted.

    Ska:
Ska was meant to be dance music, so the beat was rather up-tempo. Jamaica gained independence from Britain in 1962 and the ska dance craze, played by Jamaican musicians, matched the optimism associated with the time.

pink lane shuffle by Duke Reid & His Group (1961). Many of the artists who would later become The Skatalites worked as musicians for Reid until...

Step 4: Clement Dodd founded Studio One. Dodd created a new studio in late 1963 and to go along with it he created a new record imprint, Studio One. Dodd was the first major ska producer to have his own recording studio, beating out Reid by a few months. Reid founded Tresure Isle records, but he had lost most of the future members of The Skatalites to Dodd's Studio One. Studio One has been called “the Motown of Jamaica.” Studio One records led the Jamaican music scene until about 1966 when artists on Reid's labels (most notably Treasure Isle) brought Reid back to the forefront.

TocarFidel Castro by The Skatalites (1964). The Skatalites were the house band at Studio One and played on most of their hit records in the mid-60s.

My Boy Lollipop by Millie Small (1964). Island Records founder Chris Blackwell (A Brit who had lived in Jamaica since 1961) brought Millie Small to England to record. "My Boy Lollipop" surprisingly reached #2 in both the UK and the US. A young Rod Stewart supposedly played the harmonica solo.

Shame and Scandal by The Wailers (1965). Yes, this is the same Wailers that we know from the '70s. They originally formed in 1963, recorded at Studio One (with The Skatalites), and participated in each of the style shifts in the development of Reggae. "Shame & Scandal" was an old calypso and mento standard. This evidences that Jamaican traditions were still vital to the development of ska. Peter Tosh sang lead vocals on this track.

    Rocksteady - Romantic Love Songs:
Rock Steady was only popular from the fall of 1966 to summer of 1968. In Rock Steady, the musical emphasis shifted to the bass and drums and the ska rhythm was slowed considerably. Lyrically, Rock Steady was dominated by two basic formats: romantic love and rudeboy culture.
TocarAin't That Bad by The Heptones (1966)
TocarI'm Still in Love With You by Alton Ellis & the Flames (1967)
TocarThe Tide Is High by The Paragons (1967). This is, of course, the song that Blondie covered in 1980.

    Rocksteady - Rudeboy Culture:
The term "Rudeboys" meant the youth culture of urban Jamaica. Rudeboy culture was sometimes blamed for the increased crime and rudeboys were often scapegoated as the reason things were worse after Jamaica gained independence from England in 1962. Artists took both sides regarding the issue. Some said rudeboys were harmless, others said they were criminals, but that their poverty was to blame, and others held the rudeboys wholly responsible and warned of consequences. Rudeboys were also known for having an affinity for Spaghetti Westerns and James Bond.
Tocar007 (Shanty Town) by Desmond Dekker & The Aces (1967). "007 (Shanty Town)" includes every one of the aspects listed above. It both glorifies and warns rudeboys and it name-drops James Bond and the Rat-Pack film Oceans 11. “007 (Shanty Town)” hit the Top 15 in the UK and at least charted in the US.

The Hip-Hop Beef developed out of sound system competitions in the Bronx between Afrika Baambaataa and DJ Cool Herc (who was himself from Jamaica - he is the link). As mentioned above, sound system competitions first occurred between Clement "Coxsone" Dodd and Arthur "Duke" Reid in 1950’s Jamaica. In addition, following this strand, the idea of writing attack and response songs directly or indirectly about a rival musician can be traced at least as far back as this 1966-7 contention between Derrick Morgan and Prince Buster (a debate about the merits and detriments of rudeboys):
TocarTougher Than Tough by Derrick Morgan (1966)
TocarJudge Dread by Prince Buster (1967)

    Growing Influence / Mature Form:
TocarIsraelites by Desmond Dekker & The Aces (1968). "Israelites" was a number one hit in the UK and reached the Top Ten in the US. This was the first truly international reggae hit.
Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da by The Beatles (1968). With "Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da" Paul McCartney acknowledged the growing popularity of Reggae in England. The character named Desmond in the song is in reference to Desmond Dekker. The groove is an odd mix of ska and honky-tonk.
TocarRivers Of Babylon by The Melodians (1969). "Rivers of Babylon," just like "Israelites," uses the parallel between the Biblical Jews and the enslaved Africans. With "Rivers of Babylon," Reggae had reached a fully mature form (the groove is perfect, as are the harmonies, call and response vocals, and production).

    Reggae Hits the Mainstream:
The line between Rocksteady and Reggae is a little blurry. Reggae was generally not as smooth lyrically or musically as Rock Steady. The music could be faster or slower than Rock Steady (Bob Marley would tell you it got even slower). Basically, Reggae meant a lot more experimentation and variety.
Mother and Child Reunion by Paul Simon (1972). Mr. World Music Extraordinaire himself actually had a Reggae hit just as authentic Reggae became popular in the US with the soundtrack to the film The Harder They Come (think Blaxploitation films, like Shaft, but set in Jamaica). The next two tracks are both from that soundtrack album and "Rivers of Babylon," although already three years old in Jamaica, was included on the album as well.
TocarThe Harder They Come by Jimmy Cliff (1972).
TocarPressure Drop by Toots & The Maytals (1972). Toots & the Maytals had been around since the early 60s and I regret not putting any of that earlier music on this playlist - if one more song would have fit in the playlist, it would have been early Toots.

    Reggae Experimentation:
TocarI Can See Clearly Now by Johnny Nash (1972). Great song from an American artist, but what are those strange noises in the background during the chorus of this Reggae song? Experimentation.

  • Ouvindo muito reggae ultimamente.

    Ago 12 2007, 3h22 por lordlancaster

Estou ouvindo bastante o The Ethiopians.

The Paragons, Justin Hinds & The Dominoes, Winston Wright...

  • Chalk and Cheese #20: Atomic Kitten vs. Eartha Kitt

    Out 15 2006, 10h43 por Orange_Anubis

What we have here is innocence versus experience, like William Blake if he'd used to be in OMD. Atomic Kitten always tried to project a wholesome sort of of an image, which never quite rung true as they always carried the distinct whiff of being slappers, while Eartha Kitt celebrated her own sexuality at every turn, but somehow seemed more of a lady overall.

I say 'celebrated' and 'seemed' when talking about Eartha Kitt, but my use of the past tense is premature. Most famous perhaps for her stint as Catwoman in the 60s Batman series, she's still touring today, at an unconfirmed age believed to be approaching 80. It's her signature song TocarI Want To Be Evil that I'm interested in today. Delivered originally in a lazy drawl, like most of her early material it became cultish following her live performances. The 1965 recording 'Live At The Plaza' is a huge favourite in my workplace; Eartha performs improbably in languages including Japanese, Romanian, a Philippines dialect and Urdu, cackling and barking throughout.

And in 'I Want To Be Evil' she laments how she's 'always pure but never chased' (nice wordplay, thank you) while going on to exclaim how she'd like to 'shoot pool', 'trump an ace' and 'wake up in the morning with that dark brown taste'. I appreciate her sentiments, but the exact meaning of that last phrase remains unclear, perhaps we need to refer to my post yesterday.

Atomic Kitten, meanwhile, inject the least possible meaning into every song they sing. I hear they've reformed, I'm trying to ignore it. Four years ago they were at number one for weeks with their cover TocarThe Tide Is High. Cover versions which add nothing to the original appal me in their cynicism. You picture a producer rubbing his hands together at the thought that a large number of 14 year olds will never have heard the song before and so buy the single because it's such a great track. It's especially egregious when it's a cover of a cover like this one. It interests me as a kind of extreme projection of postmodernism: when you hear Atomic Kitten's 'The Tide Is High' you're lucky if you're old enough to remember the Blondie version they're referencing, let alone the original by The Paragons. In just the same way that Will Young's cover of José Feliciano's Light My Fire leaves everyone ignorant of The Doors, and Marilyn Manson's Tainted Love might just spark an interest in Soft Cell but never in Gloria Jones's original.

Which places Atomic Kitten as the ultimate modern product, and, I'm pleased to say, Eartha as a true original. The Cat to these Kittens. she purrs and growls as she pleases. She was ostracised from the US for ten years after speaking out about Vietnam, can you imagine a single member of the gruesome Scouse threesome doing the same? Or for that matter anything remotely interesting? In their tireless quest to sell records they eliminate all traces of personality from themselves, while Eartha - being quite genuinely mad - remains a star.
