Em 1984, os adolescentes Dexter Holland e Greg Kriesel, que eram colegas de ginásio em Huntington Beach, resolveram formar uma banda após saírem de um concerto da banda de projeção local Social Distortion. Mais tarde, Kevin “Noodles” Wasserman foi chamado para banda pelo seu infame talento de conseguir bebidas alcoólicas para os integrantes da banda, na época menores de idade.
Tocando sob o nome de Manic Subsidal, em 1986 a banda decide trocar de nome para The Offspring.
Seu primeiro single em vinil foi lançado na gravadora independente Black Label, fundada pelos próprios integrantes da banda. Mais tarde, o baterista original resolve sair da banda para dedicar-se mais aos estudos, sendo trocado por Ron Welty, com 16 anos na época. Seu primeiro single teve tiragem de mil cópias, contendo as canções “I’ll Be Waiting” e “Blackball”.
Seu álbum de estréia, The Offspring, foi lançado pela gravadora independente Nemesis/Cargo, produzido por Thom Wilson (responsável por álbuns de outras bandas como Dead Kennedys), vendendo três mil cópias desta estréia em vinil. Dois anos depois, uma de suas canções é inserida numa coletânea da Epitaph Records (selo pertencente ao guitarrista do Bad Religion, Brett Gurewitz), lançando logo no ano seguinte seu primeiro disco pela nova gravadora, Ignition, que ganhou disco de platina pelas suas vendas no mundo todo.

I know I'm a bit behind the curve on this one, but I never really got around to listening to the new album, and now that I have, I can't stop. My favourites so far are Half-Truism, You're Gonna Go Far, Kid (though I was less than pleased when I realized how quickly it had been picked up by shows like 90210, which will screw up the charts and become the only song new kids know) and Kristy, Are You Doing Okay? The Offspring was pretty much the premise for my friendship with one of my buddies years ago, so it always reminds me of him. That's also where I heard the new album.

How bizarre, ParaSonitus--have CD's become these strange, fragile objects that young people don't know how to handle, because all music is now downloaded? You would really trip out if you saw my vinyl collection... I mourn the apparent death of the album, as opposed to discrete songs...

I've been listening to this band since I was a kid. They're just amazing. Everyone who likes their music should go out and buy their new album, even if you've already downloaded the tracks. The album art is great and really is worth it. And the design is awesome as well. No plastic to break if you have it sitting around on the floor with no CD inside! : D But if the CD is inside, make sure you've got it somewhere safe. Seriously guys, it's definitely worth it. You're Gonna Go Far, Kid is a great song, but a bit repetitive. Hammerhead is a very unique song and the way it's written is great. Kristy Are You Doing Okay? and Fix You are a lot softer than all the other songs, and not my favourites, but they're also very good songs. The album was definitely worth the wait. Favourite song = Nothingtown. Love it. So, go and buy the album guys.
