  • Instrumental Hip Hop

    Mar 5 2009, 17h24 por wutanghej

A good beat goes a long way in the rap world these days. But what also goes a long way is being able to establish yourself as a credible Hip Hop producer. True Hip Hop heads know the importance of producers in the game- DJ Premier, Pete Rock, J Dilla- but rarely do people take the time to enjoy the craft of just the beat. Sure fire for lyrics over an equally hot sound is the definition of Rap music, but songs off of instrumental albums deserve more credit than they get. Often, people forget that Hip Hop is a form of art. Within the art is the creation of music. While most producers have limited knowledge on musical instruments, they have an ear for good jazz, funk and everything in between, which helps them craft beats from crate digging, song sampling and keyboard noodling all as a form of artistic expression.
My interest in instrumentals has been for longer than I can remember. Growing up, my father used to play a wide variety of genres around the house and after I started getting into Hip Hop, I started listening to this music that i once interpreted one way, and thought of it in another. I would hear a drumline or a bassline and think about other instruments that would mix well with it, or what vocal sample would be good to use. Classic artists shaped the sound, and then today's producers heard what I heard, but put it into action and crafted rap beats that ended up being very appealing for the average ear. In my experience, I have found artists like Jimi Hendrix, The Meters and Funkadelic to have the necessary soul and groove to lay the foundation for- as Jurassic 5 put it- future sounds. Most of the producers in the game may agree with these artists put forward, but would most likely offer alternative influences. Primo and Pete Rock can never stop stressing the importance of jazz, and it is shown as all of their beats often have some kind of obscure jazz sample.
Other producers may choose take different routes. Dilla is a big fan of the theme idea for his albums, while also crafting in sounds and breaks that distinguish his sound from others. Black Milk, starting a new trend of beat making, is a fan of the electronic sound which is very prevalent on his album Tronic. Primo goes for bounce and movement in his beats- see Moment Of Truth , while Rock is all about the mellow mood- see The Main Ingredient or Center of Attention.
At the end of the day, so much can be said about beats in rap music. The bottom line is, it is a huge reason why the music is as good as it is and even if you aren't a Hip Hop fan, you really should appreciate a good beat, because the influences are from unsuspecting places and it is a form of art. Who hates on artistic expression?

    Good Instrumental Artists / Albums:
Pete Rock- PeteStrumentals, The Main Ingredient
    J Dilla- Donuts, Vintage
DJ Premier (Gang Starr)- Moment Of Truth, Step In The Arena
    Dr. Dre- The Chronic
RZA- Enter The Wu-Tang, Only Built 4 Cuban Linx... (Raekwon album)
Eric B. & Rakim- Follow the Leader
    EPMD- Strictly Business
The Roots- Illadelph Halflife, Things Fall Apart
A Tribe Called Quest- Basically all of their albums, but The Low End Theory especially.
    Beatie Boys- Liscenced To Ill
    Brand Nubian- One for All
    Common- Resurrection
CunninLynguists- Anything. DJ Kno is a genius at picking and scratching vocal samples. As far as I'm concerned, the beats themselves contain limited instrumental samples.
De La Soul- 3 Feet High And Rising
    Bonobo- Animal Magic
    RJD2- Dead Ringer
9th Wonder- Murs 3:16 the 9th Edition (Murs album)
Madlib- Blunted in the Bomb Shelter Mix (so bomb), Shades Of Blue

  • album of the year!

    Out 19 2008, 19h29 por Lord_Krichian

God what have I found. The most awesome album of the year by a coincidence. Believe me , this year you can actually go back in time 30 or 40 years listening to this awesome piece of work. Now I know lots of you will say "who is that faggot?" but you should reconsider your opinion. After the first track you know the mood , you know everything. Goddamn this is so good I have to listen to it one more time ;D

I know I forgot one thing. Or maybe two.

The artist and the name of the album. So here we go. Drums

Al Stewart and the album called Sparks of Ancient Light.

If you find this album somewhere go and buy it. It's the best release this world have seen this year. Believe me.

    Here's the cover

You'll thank me later dudes ;)
