I just discovered this music, f***n brilliant! Yeah the new album is a bit different, but musically wider ranging, didn't notice the vocalist had changed that drastically. It works for me, but the singing on the first album was a bit more lush.
hahaha, this pithcfork review just once again shows how helplessly poor musical taste their kids have! i take the new album of M.H.B.B. as a reference frame rooted in an excellent piece of music. the reviews are, therefore, evaluated according to this frame, not the other way around :)
what a pain-in-the-ass review on pitchfork complaining about the "spotlight-seeking mannerisms" of singer Eska Mtungwazi and her voice "while impressive, makes no allowances for subtlety" ... damn, I couldn't disagree more since her "squeaks, whispers, bleats, purrs" do not "over-emote" but are the great spices in the soup of the new album. She's a great singer with great emotions making a kick-in-the-ass political record which seemingly do not fit in the flatline-post-everything-indie-hipster-universe of pitchfork ... oh, I over-emote! Sorry, pssst!
