It must be tough to be the opening band for the Eastpak Antidote tour. Especially when the entire crowd is there to see the headliners, Anti-Flag and Alexisonfire and therefore consists of underage emo kids who are not having a good time if they can't sing along.

Best of 2009 Albumlijstje!

Vele muziekwebsites (Oor, NME, LiveXS, 3voor12, en ga zo maar door) doen aan eindejaarslijstjes. Zo ook ik dit jaar voor het eerst, omdat ik dit jaar toch wel flink wat nieuwe albums beluisterd heb. Daarbij moet wel gezegd worden dat ik het bij mijn eigen stijl hou, dus je hoeft geen hiphop/RnB/andere 'troep' te verwachten. Goed, hierbij mijn Top 10 Albums uit 2009!

1. Wintersleep - Welcome to the Night Sky (European Release) - 10
Van de opener 'Drunk An Aluminium' tot afsluiter 'Miasmal Smoke' boeit dit album. De stem heeft soms wat wat weg van Tom Smith, zanger van de Editors, maar is iets softer, en past mooi bij hun eigen rocksound. Met zijn vele instrumentale stukken is het echt een plaat die ik uren achter elkaar kan draaien. De ene track is sloom en dromerig, de volgende heerlijk
uptempo, en het stoort gewoon niet! Een heerlijke plaat om bij weg te dromen.

2. Placebo - Battle For The Sun - 9,9
Placebo's Battle for the Sun is een weinig vernieuwende, doch ijzersterkte plaat. De opener(Kitty Litter) slaat de plank enigszins mis, maar vervolgens zijn er 5 singlewaardige tracks achter elkaar! Placebo heeft deze fout blijkbaar ook door; Kitty Litter is één van de weinige nummers van het nieuwe album die ze niet live performen. Afgezien van deze kleine
misser is Battle for the Sun gewoon weer een heerlijke Placebo plaat.

3. White Lies - To Lose My Life - 9,8
De heren van White Lies hebben een bijna perfect 2009 gehad. Hun hits vlogen je om de oren, van Death en To Lose My Life tot Farewell to the Fairground. Ook de andere tracks van hun debuut zijn solide, de donkere stem van zanger Harry McVeigh creëert een mooi sfeerbeeld
samen met de muziek. Ik hoor je al denken, hoezo 'bijna perfect 2009' dan? Enkele weken na de Nederlandse concerten stortte de zanger in tijdens een concert in Berlijn, wat het einde van hun tour betekende. De rust hebben ze in elk geval verdiend na zo'n goed jaar.

4. The Living End - White Noise (European Release) - 9,5
The Living End is net als Wintersleep een band waar maar weinig Europeanen van gehoord hebben. Deze Australische punkrockband is echter al meer dan 15 jaar een succes op eigen bodem, en wordt dan ook beschouwd als de Australische Green Day. The Living End is in
tegenstelling tot laatsgenoemde echter nog niet zo bekend buiten Oceanië, en heeft dit jaar er alles aan gedaan om hun plekje in Europese harten te veroveren met hun Europese (festival)tour en (re-)release van hun album White Noise. En met succes! Een uitverkochte Melkweg en een volle Alphatent op Lowlands bewezen dat hun reputatie buiten Australië ook groeiende is, en dat ze niet vies zijn van een goede liveshow.
Over het album zelf ga ik weinig zeggen, die moet je zelf maar checken als je van punk/rockabilly houdt!

5. Muse - The Resistance - 9,5
Voor Muse geldt hetzelfde als Placebo: Niet de beste plaat ooit, maar wel een goede! Muse is wellicht 'vernieuwend' bezig door hun eigen stijl te mixen met Queen-invloeden(United States of Eurasia, Guiding Light) en Marilyn Manson beats(Uprising), maar behoudt gelukkig ook nog
de inmiddels klassieke Muse sound(MK Ultra, Resistance). Het klassieke drieluik Exogenesis is rustgevend en uiterst solide. Festivals in 2010, haal binnen deze act!

6. Telekinesis - Telekinesis! - 9,4
Ik beloof hierbij plechtig dat dit de laatste onbekende band in mijn top 10 is! Telekinesis is de band(die nog wel eens wisselt) rond Amerikaan Michael Benjamin Lerner. Bij gebrek aan (veel) nieuw Death Cab For Cutie materiaal in 2009 komt hij met zijn debuutplaat,
'Telekinesis!', die verdacht veel weg heeft van eerder genoemde. De oorzaak? Het album is door niemand minder dat DCFC-gitarist Chris Walla geproduceerd in de studio van de drummer van DCFC. Dat de zanger naast zijn stem ook nog eens iets qua uiterlijk weg heeft van Ben
Gibbard(DCFC) heeft wellicht weinig met de sound te maken, maar is ook noemenswaardig. "Zijn er dan ook nog verschillen?", kan je je afvragen. Ja, die zijn er; Michael Benjamin Lerner is een drummer, Ben Gibbard een gitarist. Daarnaast is Telekinesis een terugkeer naar de oudere Death Cab for Cutie albums, het is meer indie dan Death Cab's 'Narrow Stairs', dus als de oudere DCFC je aanspreekt, zal Telekinesis je ook zeker boeien!

7. Kasabian - West Rider Pauper Lunatic Asylum - 9,2
Deze band gaat ook al wat jaartjes mee, maar ik ken ze eigenlijk pas sinds dit jaar. Na de goede albumreviews op verschillende sites gelezen te hebben, wilde ik toch eens zelf horen wat er zo goed aan Kasabian was! Het klinkt nieuw, het klinkt fris, het is enigszins bombastisch maar o wat lekker! Ze hadden verreweg het beste optreden van Lowlands 2009, en hopelijk ook 2010, want dat verdienen ze zeker met deze plaat!

8. Florence + The Machine - Lungs - 9,2
Net als voor White Lies was 2009 ook voor Florence & The Machine het jaar waarin zij internationaal doorbraken. De opbouw van de meeste Florence-songs is vrijwel hetzelfde(rustig begin, steeds pompender en harder totdat er een climax komt), maar het werkt geweldig! Dog Days are Over, Girl with One Eye en You've got the Love zijn de beste tracks,

9. The Fray - The Fray - 9,2
Wellicht het meest mainstreamerige album uit mijn top 10, maar zeker niet verkeerd! Zanger Isaac Slade bewijst weer eens over een goed geolied keeltje te beschikken, met Never Say Never, You Found Me en afsluiter Happiness als hoogtepunten. Ook de gitarist doet weer van
zich spreken, door het mooie Ungodly hour te zingen. Door sommigen wordt The Fray bestempeld als 'simpele pianopop', maar voor mij blijft The Fray gewoon vaste kost!

10. The xx - xx - 9,1
Ik beloofde bij Telekinesis dat dat de laatste onbekende band was; ken je the XX niet?!?! Dan moet je echt weer onder die steen gaan liggen, want je hebt wat gemist! The XX kwam eigenlijk pas na het festivalseizoen echt opduiken, nadat ze begin dit jaar al op London Calling stonden, maar het nog rustig aan deden wegens schoolverplichtingen. Want jong is
deze band! The XX mixt donkere indie met electronica, en hoe! debuutalbum XX is een heerlijk relaxte plaat geworden, zij het eigenlijk nét iets te kort, het smaakt naar meer, véél meer!
Een band om in de gaten te houden!

Green Day - The band that took me out of my Hilary Duff and Aaron Carter phase of my childhood. I heard their Dookie album and fell in love at my preteen years. I then proceeded to fall in love with BIllie Joe, mercilessly hate his wife Adrienne, then realize I was an idiot. I've grown disappointed in their most recent music, as well as American Idiot. They are pushing 40 though, perhaps they should call it all quits.

blink-182 - The second band that pulled my further out of my pop phase. Awesome band I will always love. My second love (right behind Billie) was Mark Hoppus. I obsessively listened to his podcasts and dedicated pages to him. Unlike with Billie, I didn't hate his wife. I grew out of that as well. I'm happy to hear the band is back together.

Mindless Self Indulgence - A band I heard about on a Green Day forum. All I heard was Bitches and thought not much of it. In the past 2 years, I've collected a ton of their music and of course, as usual, fell in love with the lead singer, Jimmy Urine. Who would've guessed. I watched and listened to all I could and now they're among my top 5 loves.

The Living End - Possibly the most important band of my life, these guys are badass. I got into them from a Green Day forum, and eventually, I helped turn that forum into a Living End forum. I managed to talk to the band members on myspace, and went to my first concert at Warped Tour 06 just to see them. Took a shitty ass picture with them, got them to autograph my CD as well as my tickets. Then went to see them again at Ventura Theatre way back in December 06. Best night of my life, I will say. I love them with all my being. They are the best thing I've ever heard in my life.

Music is powerful, I'm sure we all know this.

David Bowie - Earthling (1997)
David Bowie is an incredibly versatile artist who reinvented himself countless times during his 40years+ long career. His album Earthling is one of his most experimental works featuring lots of industrial-like technostomping beats, heavy guitars and synthies from hell. In my opinion his creativity was never bigger than on this one.
Play: Little Wonder

The Clash - Sandinista!(1981)
The Clash were a lot more open minded to other musical styles than other punkbands from their time - their best known album London Calling combines reggae, ska and the punkrock from their previous two albums. Sandinista! continues that way and is a two cd-36 track-packet full of ideas tearing down all genre boundaries. The mixture of punk, genuine reggae/dub, funk, jazz and pop makes this album a classic that probably never gets boring.

Sparks - Hello Young Lovers(2006)
When a band that has been around since the late 60s releases an album nowadays the result is usually not what one would call interesting(The Rolling Stones anyone?). If that band is called Sparks - a band starting with "glamkindofrock" (Kimono My House, Propaganda) then developing into electronica(and, by the way releasing the incedibly influencial classic album No.1 In Heaven) from that to pop(When Do I Get to Sing 'My Way') from pop to baroque pop using huge walls of synth-strings(Lil' Beethoven) - the result is always worth a listen.
Their 2006 released album Hello Young Lovers shows the peak of their creativity combining the pompous sound of their previous album with rock guitars(done by Dean Menta, Faith No More) and the quirky songwriting of their earlier works that influenced countless bands such as Queen who even were Sparks' supportband in their early days.. A grand opus everyone should give a listen to.

The Doors - Waiting for the Sun (1968)
The imho best album by the legendary acid rock band from LA with Jim Morrison on vocals. The psychadelic elements that already shone through the first two albums are dominating this album. It is full of interesting ideas like spanish guitars on Spanish Caravan and poppy synthies on Hello I Love You.

The Living End - Roll On (2001)
The three-piece band from Australia started off as a Stray Cats coverband which clearly influenced Chris Cheneys incredible guitar style as well as the use of the upright bass which makes them different from other modern Punkrockbands. Their debut was one of the most successful australian albums for decades and their liveperformances are among the best there are. Roll On was their second album. It combined their fresh and poweful approach on music with a much improved songwriting. It is their most complicated album to date and probably their heaviest one. The versatile songwriting and structures and the raw instrumentals make this their strongest album.
Blood on Your Hands

The Damned - The Black Album (1980)
The Damned were the first uk punkband ever to release a single, an album as well as touring the US. Their first three albums are punkrock classics with hits such as Neat Neat Neat, Smash It Up and New Rose. Their 1980 "black" album features the Damned in their most psychadelic period before becoming a goth -band. An incredibly interesting album with 12 tracks, partly beeing connected what makes up one big work, ending in the 17 Minute epic Curtain Call. Can't dare to skip a single track on it.

Tom Waits - Swordfishtrombones (1983)
Theres no real genre you could put Tom Waits in - basicly its kind of Blues / Jazz / Rock using unusual instruments like Marimbas etc and featuring his incredible raw voice. The trilogy of Rain Dogs, Franks Wild Years and Swordfishtrombones are Toms best known and most appreciated albums but his output has a constant high level so it is hard to pick a single album out of it. My choice was Swordfishtrombones(followed by Bone Machine) because it has the most atmospheric feel in it and barely leaves my stereo.

Joe Strummer and The Mescaleros - Global a Go-go (2001)
Basicly the second album by The Clash former frontman Joe Strummer with his band The Mescaleros has many aspects that his old band was famous for - a wild mix of styles and genres. But this album brings this approach to the maximum: its a musical journey round the world featuring folk rock, world music(Bhindi Bagee), Reggae, oriental sounds etc etc. Opens up your mind!

The Beatles - The White Album (1968)
Everybody knows the Beatles - but they surely had more to show than the overplayed Let It Be, Yesterday and Yellow Submarine. With Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band they released their most psychadelic album which got voted for the best album ever by the Rolling Stone magazine. The follow-up was The White Album: a double album featuring some of the most beautiful sons The Beatles have ever written, along with classic rock'n'roll bits, along with weird and experimental stuff.
Probably their most versatile album and in my opinion their best.

Pink Floyd - The Piper at the Gates of Dawn (1967)
The first album by Pink Floyd is the only one that was mostly written by the genious of Syd Barrett before he got replaced by David Gilmour. The sound is raw and psychadelic as well as somehow childish with lots of interesting harmonies and noises. A classic.

Soul / Punk / Indie combined to a unique record. Singer is now famous as Moneybrother If you dig the Clash, try this.
