i'm one of those stubborn jerks that's been on here for a while and never reset my lib. if you're at all curious as to what i was listening to before weekly charts started being compiled (i know you are!), i've discovered the first hundred or so pages of my "recently added" list are what i was listening to between april 04 and jan 05 (even though they're all listed as feb 05). this should get you close, but the back gets pushed back further with each subsequent present-day listen (duh).

why do i do this? because that was a point when i listened to more music. between 05 and 08 i hardly scrobbled at all. then after that, i started scrobbling my ipod listens and the bottom fell out. this milestone thing here makes a good visual aid (note that the first displayable track is 3000):

  • Tuesday Twenty: My top 200 tracks 1990-99 Pt.03a: 120 to 101

    Nov 17 2009, 14h34 por amodelofcontrol

    Previously: My top 200 tracks 1990-99 Pt.01a: 200 to 181
    Previously: My top 200 tracks 1990-99 Pt.01b: 180 to 161
    Previously: My top 200 tracks 1990-99 Pt.02a: 160 to 141
    Previously: My top 200 tracks 1990-99 Pt.02b: 140 to 121

Part three of my tracks of the 90s rundown: again split over two posts. The next forty will be posted on Friday.

    120
    Red Hot Chili Peppers
    Sir Psycho Sexy
    BloodSugarSexMagik
    1991

You may be forgiven for forgetting, but once upon a time the Chili Peppers were a funk-rock party band, that made everything they did sound enormous fun, with the exception of the odd ballad. And aside from the singles, they seriously went "out there" at points - like this, one of the closing tracks from BloodSugarSexMagik. It's lengthy, filthy, funny, and funky as hell. In fact, it pretty much sums up everything that was great about them (except some of the questionable lyrics), and what they've lost since in becoming stadium-rock bores...

    119
    Cannibal Corpse
    TocarHammer Smashed Face
    Tomb of the Mutilated
    1992

It's ridiculous, over-the-top, and fucking rules. Yes, it's one of the greatest death metal tracks ever written (just check the opening, chugging riff and that bass solo!), a track that never fails to inspire metalheads to go batshit whenever it's aired in clubs (or at gigs). And, never mind anything else, this has to be the most unlikely song ever to feature in a Jim Carrey film.

    118
    Ben Folds Five
    TocarJackson Cannery
    Ben Folds Five
    1995

One of the first songs BFF released, and one of the first I heard (after the delicious dig at the alternative scene that was TocarUnderground), this track has a slightly more down-to-earth subject - dead end jobs and not doing a lot with your life. It's unashamedly retro - harking back to the piano-led rock of the likes of Billy Joel and Elton John from the seventies, but with a knowing post-modern nod in the delivery, not to mention Ben Folds' fantastic line in melodies and vicious sense of humour...

    117
    Longpigs
    TocarShe Said
    The Sun Is Often Out
    1996

Another band who had a brief time in the spotlight, this Sheffield-based band were where Richard Hawley first had success, amongst other things. Their second album sadly sank without trace (it was nowhere near as bad as some would make out), but their first album had some success, mainly thanks to a trio of great singles, of which this - the first, as I recall - was the pick. A slightly-sneering take on the fashion industry (I think that's the subject, it's been a long time!), Crispin Hunt's vocal, that guitar riff...ah, the memories...

    116
    Life of Agony
    River Runs Red
    River Runs Red
    1993

I've said before just how important Keith Caputo's voice was to this band - and this blinding, short-sharp-shock of a track is a perfect reason why. His soaring vocal elevates what would otherwise a brief hardcore blitz into a soulful, shimmering track that still sounds incredible nearly twenty years since it was first released.

    115
    Blur
    TocarFor Tomorrow
    Modern Life Is Rubbish
    1993

For me, this is Blur's greatest single by miles. Parklife may have gained all the plaudits as an album, but this wonderfully whimsical slice of early-90s London life is a spot-on character sketch, and probably the closest in style the band ever got to their beloved The Kinks, too.

    114
    Faith No More
    TocarAshes to Ashes
    Album of the Year
    1997

This album was FNM's last new material - and it's something of a miracle that they lasted this long, such were the internal tensions within the band. Perhaps all the more surprising was how good this last album was, too - aside from the likes of the Mr Bungle-esque chaos of Mouth to Mouth, it was played a little more straight than previous albums, but didn't suffer a bit as a result. All of the singles were marvellous, too, but the muscular crunch of this track remains my favourite (not to mention it being one of Mike Patton's best vocal performances ever, too).

    113
    Tori Amos
    TocarThe Waitress
    Under the Pink
    1994

By some considerable distance the most spiteful song Tori Amos ever wrote, if this was based on fact you have to wonder what exactly the titular character did to deserve this wrath. It starts out calmly, Tori's near-spoken first verse accompanied only by a piano, the lyrics only hinting at what is to come - when the chorus comes hurtling in out of nowhere, and that's the marvellous kiss-off: "I believe in peace...bitch". Yeah, right.

    112
    Stabbing Westward
    TocarNothing
    Ungod
    1994

One of the many, many bands to surface in the alt-rock explosion in the aftermath of grunge, this band took more of an influence from Nine Inch Nails and various earlier electronic bands, coming up with a vaguely chart friendly, anthemic take on the style, at least with the singles. Lyrically the band were unremittingly bleak, Christopher Hall wallowing in misery and self-hatred, although it worked well with his vocal delivery and the music - this was probably the most immediate track on the album (and I'd suspect is the song that got me into the band, although my memory is kinda hazy on this), and the reason it caught on is probably something to do with the stadium-sized chorus...

    111
    The Lemonheads
    TocarConfetti
    It's a Shame About Ray
    1992

Way back when, Evan Dando's band were the shit. Like, the band every alternative kid loved. And it was all down to this album (and, likely, Mrs Robinson). The whole album is summery, whimsical indie-rock, with no song overstaying it's welcome (the whole album - all thirteen songs - is done within half an hour), and it's still a fantastic listen even now. This track - a single in the UK, at least - is still my favourite, a joyous-sounding track with rather less happy vocals...

    110
    Snot
    TocarSnot
    Get Some
    1997

A sadly short-lived first incarnation of this band, after Lynn Strait's untimely death, but their only album with him at the helm was enormous fun. A blast of punk-metal, snarling attitude and the odd breather of lounge-like ambience, they were never a band to be taken too seriously (it was plainly obvious that the band never took themselves too seriously at this point, either). And this, their calling card and the opening track on the album, laid this out nice and clearly. It was party time, and we were all invited.

    109
    Deftones
    TocarEngine No. 9
    Adrenaline
    1995

The Deftones' first album had a highly unusual, dry production that made the whole album sound extraordinarily raw, burying Chino Moreno's vocals deep within the mix. Those few moments where he did break through - like his near-primal delivery in this - were matched by some of the most brutal music the band wrote. I'll never forget the band opening with this in London back in '98 or so. It hurt, but was utterly exhilarating.

    108
    Jeff Buckley
TocarLover, You Should Have Come Over
    Grace
    1994

It wasn't TocarHallelujah that was the true centrepiece of Grace, it was this. A glorious, slow-burn (it's seven minutes or so long) detailing his state of mind as a relationship ends, and as much as it's Buckley's rich voice that is important here, it's also the elegant, poetic lyrics that set the scene perfectly, conjuring up rainswept nights lost in a city, musing on what might have been. Not that this ever happened to me, either, right? Honest.

    107
    Slayer & Atari Teenage Riot
    No Remorse (I Wanna Die)
    Spawn OST
    1997

The film may have blown, but the soundtrack ruled. A very of-the-time set of collaborations between "electronica" and "metal" artists, whoever got Slayer and Atari Teenage Riot together to do this deserves a knighthood. Quite possibly more extreme than any material either band ever put out seperately, it's so loud and in-your-face that you can't help but submit. Shame they never did any more material together, really. Could you imagine how ace an entire album of this would have been?

    106
    Vision of Disorder
    Imprint
    Imprint
    1998

A band that never quite got the respect they deserved, in my view, merging viciously heavy hardcore with lighter elements and coming up with a couple of endlessly listenable albums at least - not least this one. Of which the title track is one of a number of highlights - impressively changing tempo for each verse and containing at least three awesome breakdowns, and being a great tune to boot, too.

    105
    The Jesus Lizard
    Mouth Breather
    Goat
    1991

David Yow's band always sounded like they were teetering on the edge of complete and utter chaos, and it also strikes me that Steve Albini's production techniques were the perfect fit for such a band: tight, taut, and they could be unrelentingly harsh. Mouth Breather isn't their harshest, but the glorious riff that heralds the track is worth it alone.

    104
    The Chemical Brothers
    TocarIn Dust We Trust
    Exit Planet Dust
    1995

The Chems: one of the few electronic acts to successfully write tracks like a rock band, and cross over in a big way. Certainly, that was how it was in the first place, and while TocarLeave Home got me interested, it was this track that followed it on their debut album that sealed the deal. It sounds bloody huge, and a fantastic, dirty bassline underpinning it that drives the whole track forward.

    103
    Pulp
    TocarJoyriders
    His 'n' Hers
    1994

It wasn't Different Class that got Pulp their big break after years toiling away on the indie circuit - it was the previous album, His'n'Hers, that got them the wider attention that then paved the way for the huge success that followed. And the opening track from that, Joyriders, is a marvellous sketch about rebellious youth with nothing much to do other than to nick cars for fun, one of those songs that is brilliant because you can picture every single lyrical detail (and, not to mention, it's an ace song generally). The real story behind the song is rather thinner (if no less amusing), though...

    102
    Sepultura
    Manifest
    Chaos A.D.
    1993

Five minutes of brutal metal fury, this track was built around (fake) newscast-style radio reports detailing the police brutality surrounding the Carandiru prison massacre (that eventually saw the police chief in charge acquitted), and was a staggering clarion call for justice. Other tracks on this album may also have had points to make on the state of Brazil and the wider world, but none made their point as forcefully - or brilliantly - as this.

    101
...And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead
    TocarMistakes & Regrets
    Madonna
    1999

Following the cacophonous, chaotic noise at the heart of their debut album, they somehow managed to fashion this into a more, er, indie mainstream appeal on their second album, without losing an iota of their visceral fury that seemed to drive everything they did. Leading the charge was this extraordinary track, a dramatic kiss-off to someone who really must have done something bad to deserve such a stripping down in the lyrics.

  • Wait, People Released Records in 2009?!

    Nov 5 2009, 6h48 por theoncegreat

Ah, another time to blindly assume that people whom I don't know even remotely give a shit about the records I've been enjoy thus far this year.

    The Good:
    1. Converge 'Axe to Fall'

Past the obligatory "their best since 'Jane Doe'" comment, you can apply whichever brand of generic messianic praise as heard from every magazine, website, and lips of "jaded" ex-hardcore-kid-gone-hipster.
    2. Mount Eeire 'Wind's Poem'
Mr. Elvrum has taken an already gorgeous indie folk sound and packed with a tone infinitely more overwhelming and unsettling than a horde of corpse painted Moribund rejects.

    3. Hail 'Folklife'

This is the sort of epic, almost religious black metal record that reminds you exactly why you get so damn irritated at the sight of a Wolves in the Throne Room t-shirt.
    4. Andrew Jackson Jihad 'Can't Maintain'

The several paces made towards the more electric end of the sarcastic folk punk spectrum may upset a few fans ala "Dylan goes electric" but it doesn't come close to stopping the record from being their usual blast of smarmy, manic depressive, toe-tapping goodness.

    5. Weekend Nachos 'Unforgivable'

You know those holes you used to leave in the drywall of your buddy's studio apartment after a night of cheap beer and Slap-a-Ham 7"s? They're about to get bigger and more frequent.

    6. Diamatregon 'Crossroad'
    7. Marduk 'Wormwood'
    8. Dear Landlord 'Dream Homes'
    9. Black Vomit 'Jungle Death'
    10. HAT 'The Demise Of Mankind'
    11. The Catalyst 'Swallow your Teeth'
    12. The Mountain Goats 'The Life of the World to Come'
    13. Skagos 'Ást'
    14. Marissa Nadler 'Little Hells'
    15. The Wild 'The Wild'
    16. Grave Miasma 'Exalted Emanation'
    17. Fell Voices 'Untitled'
    18. Battletorn 'Reflect the Filth'
    19. Wizard Smoke 'Live Rock in Hell'
    20. Past Lives 'Strange Symmetry'
    21. The Devin Townsend Project 'Addicted'
    22. Peste Noire 'Ballade Cuntre lo Anemi Francor'
    23. Stabat Mater 'Stabat Mater'
    24. Ithdabquth Qliphoth 'Funeral Spirit of Holy, Holy, Holy Tranceformation'
    25. Altar of Plagues 'White Tomb'
    26. Matt & Kim 'Grand'
    27. Morrissey 'Years of Rufusal'
    28. Rome 'Flowers from Exile'
    29. L'Acephale 'Stahlhartes Gehause'
    30. Amesoeurs 'Amesoeurs'
    31. Beherit 'Engram'
    32. Proclamation 'Execration of Cruel Bestiality'
    33. The Ruins of Beverast 'Foulest Semen of a Sheltered Elite'
    34. Ad Hominem 'Dicatator - A Monument of Glory'
    35. Teitanblood 'Seven Chalices'
    36. Big Business 'Mind the Drift'
    37. Asobi Seksu 'Hush'
    38. Nurse With Wound 'The Surveillance Lounge'
    39. Yoga 'Megafauna'
    40. Beat Circus 'Boy from Black Mountain'

    The Bad:
    1. Brokencyde 'I'm Not a Fan, But the Kids Like It!'
When I was seventeen years old, I had to see my father laying dead on the cold, concrete basement floor of my parent's house due to an early morning heart attack. A handful of years the gravity of that image means little to nothing in the shadow of something as disgusting and utterly upsetting as this record. Quite simply the worst album ever.
    2. Emmure 'Felony'
The "br00tal" breakdowns and vocals serve as fantastic thought fodder for when you're trying not to get an erection in the locker room after football practice...you jock asshole.
    3. Mastodon 'Crack the Skye'
What was once the future of heavy metal is now the past of mediocre alternarock.

    The Demo:
    Like Bats 'Demo'
It's rare that I wish my eyesight was bad enough to require me to don a loose, gray t-shirt found in a thrift store dollar bin, ride my baby blue spray painted fixed gear bike down to Lens Crafters to pick up my thick, black rimmed glasses, all in order to make sure the fresh Jawbreaker tribute tattoo looks as badass as I imagined.

    The Split:
Ashdautas / Volahn / Arizmenda / Kallathon / Axeman / Unknown 'Worship Black Twilight'
Remember those days when USBM was little more than a nod to Von in a conversation about Sweden and Norway? Neither can I.

    The Reissue:
    The Jesus Lizard 'Goat'
Amongst a sea of the usual countless unknown out of print Japanese psych / krautrock / prog masterworks pressed to plastic for either the first time or first time in years to the glee of ubernerdu collectors and genre freaks (myself included somewhere between) floats one of the most important (and one of my favorite) albums ever record - which has most definitely recieve it's much due praise. The minor sounds tweaks to 'Goat' are noticable enough to flesh out the album quite nicely - giving it a more rounded sound - but subtle enough to not destroy the hectic not-quite-lo-fi freakout tone that make the album so damn listenable.

    The Shows:
    1. The Jesus Lizard / All the Saints (Atlanta, GA)
    2. The Mountain Goats / John Vanderslice (Durham, NC)
    3. Woven Hand (Denver, CO)
    4. Amebix / Poison Idea (Portland, OR)
    5. Primordial / Korpiklaani / Swashbuckle (San Francisco, CA)
    6. Joe Jack Talcum (Chicago, IL)
    7. Gogol Bordello (Atlanta, GA)
    8. Fear (Atlanta, GA)
    9. Phobia / Municipal Waste / Cauldron (Atlanta, GA)
    10. Leech / Hail / Fauna (Olympia, WA)

  • 30 Questions About My Top 30

    Out 26 2009, 6h18 por MisterJunior

I'm a sucker for a good (or bad) survey, so here's another...

    1. How did you get into 29?
The Beatles: Hard to say. I remember my mom playing some Beatles stuff when I was younger but I didn't really listen to them very much again until I was probably 18 or 19.

    2. What was the first song you ever heard by 22?
The Band: I'm sure it was either "The Weight" or "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down."

    3. How many albums by 13 do you own?
Dead Kennedys: All of them except the live archival stuff they've put out recently.

    4. What is your favorite song by 15?
Dead Can Dance: I'll say "Black Sun" because I guess technically "How Fortunate the Man with None" is a cover of sorts.

    5. What is your favorite song by 5?
John Coltrane: I like "Alabama" a lot. "Equinox" is great too. I'll say "Alabama," though.

    6. Is there a song by 6 that makes you happy?
Johann Sebastian Bach: Lots, but I'll be predictable and say the "Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring" movement of Cantata 147.

    7. What is your favorite song by 10?
Neil Young: "Cowgirl in the Sand."

    8. What is a good memory you have involving 30?
The Velvet Underground: I can't really think of anything specific.

    9. Is there a song by 19 that makes you happy?
Madvillain: The whole Madvillainy album makes me happy. I'd be even happier if they ever put out the proper follow-up to it.

    10. How many times have you seen 25 live?
Steely Dan: Never! I would love to see them live, though.

    12. What is your favorite album by 11?
The Rolling Stones: The four from Beggars Banquet to Exile on Main St. are all equally awesome, I think... but in the past couple years my favorite has been The Rolling Stones, Now!.

    13. What is your favorite song by 1?
Thelonious Monk: I'll say "Bemsha Swing."

    14. Have you ever seen 14 live?
Misfits: No. I'm not old enough to have seen them when they were together, and I don't consider the current band to be the same Misfits.

    15. What is a good memory involving 27?
The Jesus Lizard: Check back with me in November, when I hope to have seen them live.

    16. What is your favorite song by 16?
The Fall: That's like asking a parent to name their favorite child. If I had a gun to my head I would say "Garden."

    17. What is your favorite album by 18?
Morphine: Probably Cure for Pain, but The Night has really grown on me lately.

    18. What is your favorite song by 21?
    Pixies: "Motorway to Roswell."

    19. What is the first song you ever heard by 26?
Carl Orff: "O Fortuna" from Carmina Burana.

    20. What is your favorite album by 2?
Ludwig van Beethoven: He pre-dates the idea of "albums," so I'll skip this one.

    21. What is you favorite song by 3?
Tom Waits: "All the World is Green."

    22. What is you favorite song by 8?
Cows: Again, this is very difficult. I'll say "Cabin Man," although I've likely perjured myself since I think I said "The Man" in another survey.

    23. How many times have you seen 17 live?
    Minutemen: None.

    24. What is the worst song by 12?
Bill Evans: I haven't heard anywhere close to everything he ever recorded, but it's tough for me to think of a bad song of his that I have heard.

    25. What was the first song you ever heard by 28?
Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds: "Red Right Hand," which pops up randomly in Dumb & Dumber.

    26. What is you favorite album by 7?
Ramones: The debut. I'd put it in my top 3 albums of all time.

    27. What is your favorite song by 24?
    The Clash: "Straight to Hell."

    28. Is there a song by 9 that makes you happy?
Lou Reed: "Walk on the Wild Side" makes me kind of happy. If I could include "Sweet Jane" that would be my choice.

    29. What is your favorite album by 4?
    NoMeansNo: 0+2=1.

    30. How many albums do you own by 20?
Fugazi: All of them except the "Furniture" single.

  • 60,000

    Out 7 2009, 3h33 por asdfqaz

My 60,00th track is Blackbird Raum - Valkyrie Horsewhip Reel

I chose this as my 60,000th track, as this band (and particularly song) was introduced to me by a friend within my cooperative housing community. I've recently moved into one of the co-ops in Kalamazoo. This is the first band I've really seriously gotten into that someone here has introduced me to.

I feel the need to give a few more music mentions, other than my 60,000th track.

Best album of the year so far: Madness - The Liberty Of Norton Folgate
Best band discovered this year: Aartist]Andrew Jackson Jihad
Best live show this year: The Jesus Lizard (honorable mention to X)
Favorite local band: Cookie Bumstead & The Lonesome Space Cadets
Anticipated releases for this year: Mischief Brew & Guignol - Fight Dirty, Blackbird Raum, Mountain Goats - the Life of the World to Come

Also I feel like mentioning that this year I have joined a folk-punk band: the Alamanc Shouters. All our recordings thus far are available online, and we will soon be working on more. We haven't played a ton of shows, but we have already played shows with the likes of Wingnut Dishwashers Union, chris clavin, Pink Houses, Arkansas? Public service announcement, and will soon be playing with Destroy Nate Allen.

    Obligatory top 10 artists overall:
    1 The Mountain Goats 1,684
    2 The Residents 1,231
    3Frank Zappa 1,138
4 They Might Be Giants 1,023

    7 Mischief Brew 922
    8 Against Me! 755
