  • Murs at home, at work in my car.....Murs everywhere, Murs for president.

    Nov 18 2008, 10h50 por Spankmaster79

I know the release of the Murs - Murs for President album is not brand new. But I didn't write about it yet. So I'll do now, because I just love this album. I was always a listener of Murs, but untill now he only had huge tracks, but not albums for me. But wait, that's not all correct because I also love that Felt 2: A Tribute To Lisa Bonet together with Slug. Production is done by, of course his pal 9th Wonder, will.i.am, NOTTZ, Khalil and some more

So here's the cover, the tracklist....just as usual....and below some comments on the tracks.

    1 - Intro
    2 - I'm Innocent
    3 - Lookin' Fly feat. will.i.am
    4 - The Science
5 - Can It Be (Half A Million Dollars And 18 Months Later)
    6 - Everything
7 - Road Is My Religion
    8 - Sooo Comfortable
9 - Time Is Now feat. Snoop Dogg
10 - Think You Know Me
11 - Me And This Jawn
12 - Love And Appreciate II feat. Tyler Woods
    13 - Apart Of Me
14 - Break Up (The OJ Song)
    15 - Breakthrough

I love tracks with a good soul sample, so the album starts of just right with nr. 2 sampling Honey Cone with Innocent 'Til Proven Guilty, that was also used for Commons - TocarTestify. I would have never thought someone else could use it and it would not sound like the Common track, but here's the proof. Lookin' fly with will.i.am has more of a club attitude, which I didn't like first. But now I'm turning it up in my car just as I do with the others. The science where he is really dropping science about the problems of "rich staying rich and poor staying poor" to the history of Hip-Hop and how it all started. Nr. 5 has a great The Jackson 5 sample to it and no, Murs, you didn't stay away to long ;-), we still love you.

Another track that really sticks out for me is Nr. 11. The The Isley Brothers sample is wiggled up by a little scratching and the beat NOTTZ build there is just a bomb!!! And yes,me an my jawn got our thing going on, so it just fits my situation........except for, I'm not getting married.......yet. ;-). From this track on you go through all stages of realation ships from loving your girl for life, to breaking up with her in Nr. 14 . Just great story telling and even the, at a first impression akward Rock a like track Nr. 13 is a great song. And last but not least is another great 9th Wonder track Breakthrough.

Just one question, why was the a little earlier released Sweet Lord together with 9th Wonder not as strong....maybe because it's for free??? Not really, it's still better as most albums out there, so go get it here:

And to finish it up here are some vids:

  • Thrill the World

    Out 24 2008, 15h23 por hanoc

  • Family Business (got this from my bro)

    Out 24 2008, 14h36 por 5anna

I don’t know what’s wrong with him but anyway, my (step)bigbrother wanted to create a playlist based on his own taste for me. Ha, I suppose he’s worried I’ll lose my mind with all 30STM or something but anyway, this is the receipt I got last night with an order to listen it from first to last at least once (and to be honest with you, the list isn’t that bad IMO, me and my bro share some artists in common anyway).

So here’s for you bro if you’re ever stalking me – see, I’m listening your shit! ;)

    +++

    Faith No More > Epic
    > Hey, I really like this! And I bet I have heard this song before somewhere… But yeah, I could borrow some CDs in near future, I promise ^^’

    Tool > Forty Six & 2
    > I actually listened quite much Tool last winter (before I reset my account in here) but I don’t know… I listen it sometimes and it’s ’okay’ but nothing more for me, at least not at the moment.

Nine Inch Nails > Terrible Lie
    > D’oh, this one was quite unnecessary, I already am a NIИ fan. And someone apparently wanted to play smart with picking up Terrible Lie as a reference to 30STM’ album A Beautiful Lie – ooooold one ;P

    Radiohead > Idioteque
    > I have never listened Radiohead and as stupid as it sounds, I don’t even want to try them because of the fact that they have so fucking much plays in here. I know it sounds stupid and makes no sense but anyway, I’m not interested in them ><’ I have heard couple of songs and those ones were nothing special for me. Also that endless Radiohead vs. Muse –war irritates me (and btw I do like Muse and have listened them quite much, so maybe that’s one reason I don’t care about Radiohead – God bless my subconscious).

    Refused > New Noise
    > HC punk from Sweden? Well whatever, basically I’m not into this kind of music and I know nothing about it but at least the sample song was okay. I guess I wouldn’t mind hearing couple of songs more.

The Dillinger Escape Plan > Setting Fire to Sleeping Giants
    > Actually Kati already recommented Dillinger Escape Plan to me and I listened it quite much some time ago and this one is for some reason one of my favorite songs by them. At least first this band (and now don’t kill me) reminded me about The Fall of Troy but actually I prefer DEP. Yeeeeeah, I want to listen them more, perfect music for sleepy mornings to wake you up or for angsty evenings alone at home.

    The Bled > Red Wedding
    > Never Heard -band but sounds okay. Does the song title has something to do Billy Idol’s White Wedding?

    Björk > Violently Happy
    > Hmmm, I love Björk and her art work & Debut is definitely my favorite album<3 So again a bit unnecessary recommendation but I don’t mind since it feels nice to hear something familiar and lovely after (and before) all those HC bands x)

    A Perfect Circle > Passive
    > For me A Perfect Circle is in the same category than Tool in my book: sometimes I listen to it and like it or fell in love with some song, but erm you could say I don’t have more passions towards them. eMOTIVe is great album anyway and actually the only one of their albums I own.

Thom Yorke > And It Rained All Night
    > LOL, so I’m not interested in Radiohead but I love Thom Yorke’s solo works. Wicked, isn’t it? Damn maybe I should give up someday and listen one Radiohead album or something after all… IDK but I adore Thom Yorke’s songs and they always remind me of some other artist’s art work but I still haven’t figured that puzzle out. Whatever, Thom Yorke seems to have a vision.

    Peeping Tom > Mojo
    > ha, I didn’t know this is one of Mike Patton’s projects :P Well, I’m wiser again and yes, I do like this! I should have found this last summer while having a huge trip-hop fever but anyway this still works, gotta find more this shit.

Bullet for My Valentine > No Control
    > Haha, bittersweet memories of last winter in this song. I remember how Elina and I first met B4MV and why/how that happened, lol. Actually my other bigbrother is the one to blaim for that, damn this family. Erm anyway, I’m not literally a fan of B4MV anymore since I have some not-so-nice experiences related to them but I like them when I’m in a right mood, they are nice guys and great for live! (and secretly I’m a tr00 fangirl for Matt Tuck! XxooXX lol )

    Pantera > The Badge
    > Hey, I already got this song, it’s from The Crow’s soundtrack o/ I actually don’t have anything else to say about Pantera at the moment… I’m not there yet :P

    Avenged Sevenfold > Unholy Confessions
    > I remember my sister likes/liked Avenged Sevenfold a lot, at least it was in last summer ^^ Well, I have nothing against this band, personally I just haven’t listened them (yet). Damn Jen, I want you to make me a playlist like this someday (lol, maybe you could skip the 30 Seconds to Mars part :P )

    Slipknot > Purity
    > I maybe unsofisticated but I have never listened Slipknot before and to be honest, I didn’t like this song. I don’t know and I’m not doing too quick conclusions or anything, let’s just say the first impression wasn’t the best one. Laters.

    Mudvayne > Happy?
    > (ha, Mudvayne actually was quite hight in Slipknot’s similar artists) I like this song and I want to find more >:) Somehow reminds me about Fair to Midland and that’s definitely a positive thing. Gotta remember these guys too.

    Beastie Boys > Intergalactic
    > DAMN I love this song! :’D Actually I downloaded this playlist to my mp3-player last night and heard this song this morning in work and I had to stop for awhile to check out my player to find out what was this weird & unknown song going on. I promise Beastie Boys will be now officially at the top in my shopping list.

    The Pharcyde > Runnin’
    > Yeah I admit I don’t know anything about hiphop/rap/whatsoever stuff but I have always appreciated the magic they can do with words and… yeah, maybe I should find out more someday, at least this song sounds nice (and damn it seems to be from 8 Mile’s soundtrack – I bet I have that CD somewhere… gotta find it next).

John Williams > Star Wars: Main Title
    > hallelujah Bro, why no one told me before this is the guy behind Star Wars’ music? Ha, I’m big fan of the original Star Wars trilogy and I love soundtracks so how an earth I have never before searched for Star Wars music? DAMN hearing this makes me homesick; I want to go home and watch these movies! :’D

Creedence Clearwater Revival > Fortunate Son
    > wow what a weird coincidency: last night I was reading Stephen King’s Shining and there was mentioned that some Creedence Clearwater Revival song was going on in radio. Yeah well now I know how it sounded then – and it sounds okay, I like this kind of music =)

Eminem > The Way I Am
    > HA, I remember I listened a LOT of Eminem at the time I was freshman in highschool and that Sing for the Moment song was constantly played in radio (yeah: I listened Energy FM by that time). Like said I haven’t listened this kind of music in years but despite that I really appreciate Eminem as an artist (and aww those teen angst memories with songs like Cleaning Up My Closet and When The Music Stops). Ha, I think I have that The Eminem Show -album somewhere, maybe I should search for that too.

The Jackson 5 > I want You Back
    > OmfG, where the hell did this came from? .___. OMG OMG now I’m just laughing my ass off while imaging in which state of mind my bro listen to stuff like this xD No offence but… no thanks for me. Must be some nostalgia track I can’t understand because I was born too late or something (see, I’m trying to make sensible explonation for this one after all). (or then this was a joke and now I'm the one you should laugh at as I took this seriously... hmph, I dunno)

Guns N' Roses > Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door
    > Yeah, I admit it’s a shame I haven’t listened Guns N’ Roses before and I’ve been planning to buy some of their album in near future anyway… I used to know this song as a cover by Daniel Lioneye and I have always loved it. Yep, another must-have-an-album -band from this playlist. (besides I have always loved the finnish nickname of this band – would be nice to say that I’m nowadays listening Gunnarit, lol).

    16Volt > Everyday Everything
    > If I was writing in Finnish now I’d say No nyt päästiin asiaan! but since I’m not and I don’t know how to enact that expression well in English I’m just saying that this sound fucking good for me, I want MORE.

    Godhead > Deconstruct
    > Actually I have a feeling someone else have also recommended Godhead for me or then I have heard some song by them in some soundtrack… sounds familiar & okay for me (wait a second, actually I have listened Gravity Kills and Stabbing Westward and Godhead is in their Similar Artist, holy Last.fm) …but yeah, I’m pretty big fan of industrial in general and I have nothing against this band nether.

    +++

…that’s all, I listened it all, happy now? Let’s see how long it takes before the bands mentioned above show up to my charts ;)

Ps. I couldn’t find all the songs I was recommented so I just took something from every artist. Don’t come to say me ”that spesific song sucks, they have so many better ones…”

Pps. I also skipped Depeche Mode, The Beatles (hey Mrs. Robinson is my favorite too<3), The Police, Led Zeppelin, Metallica and Nirvana from this playlist review since I’m already into them and I had nothing more to say about them. Apparently me and my wannabe-bro still have something in common in our music tastes after all and without any force-listening sessions. Ha but thanks for these new sounds anyway & cheers =)
  • "Never Can Say Goodbye" - fun fact

    Out 3 2008, 5h36 por 2Serenity

Did anyone ever watch the show, Amen, which was on NBC from the late 80s to early 90s ? Remember the character of the Reverend who was chased by Thelma Frye?

    Well, guess what?

Do you know that the Reverend (Clifton Davis)from the hit series, Amen, wrote the song, "Never Can Say Goodbye?"

    Clifton Davis' Official Website
    http://www.cliftondavis.com/

I honestly was clueless on this. All these years I really was unaware of the writer but when I realized that not only did The Jackson Five make this song famous but it was performed by Isaac Hayes and some other musicians.

When another artist performer's another musician's work, they call that a cover. So, I was unaware of all those who had covered the song beyond The Jackson 5 and Isaac Hayes.

Please check the Wikipedia Entry for more information:

  • The worst songs EVER

    Set 4 2008, 14h03 por Richaod

Apologies to my single-digit readership for not updating in a few months... but circumstances (procrastination, school, the need to make all blogs a substantial length, the rise and fall of the planned Phoenix Wright: The Musical publicity release and MICHAEL FUCKING HAMMOND) prolonged my absence. I have another mega-blog in the works, but right now I feel inspired to finally complete my ever-growing list of worst songs ever.

Some blogger dude on some website (might've been Roger Ebert, or PopMatters) recently pointed out that the true worst movies ever aren't the lowest-common-denominator ones - the Snakes on a Planes, Soul Planes, Epic/Date/Superhero Movies of the world, or anything involving Paris Hilton or Uwe Boll. Unless you're utterly deluded, you shouldn't actually expect anything of them, and even if you do spend your money or bandwidth, at least they're forgettable. On the other hand, the movies that people do expect something from, but are absolute, complete trainwrecks - Water World, Ishtar, Battlefield Earth, Baz Luhrmann's Romeo + Juliet etc. - are truly terrifying.

Same goes for music. Though terrible, no one cares about Hanson or Simple Plan. So I've gone for artists who terrorized an unexpecting world on their debuts, or ones you thought were only average or unspectacular, the ones you heard years ago on Mix 101.1 FM before you realized half the songs they played were disco and got under your skin, hibernating and growing larger over the years until you randomly come across them again on YouTube at which point they cause you to wake up screaming, screaming in the night yelling, "LINDA PERRY'S MOUTH! LINDA PERRY'S MOUTH!" before the infinite blackness of Linda Perry's mouth swallows you, and you lapse into a restless sleep once again.

Public (internet) opinion seems to support most of these songs too, hurray for credibility. But someone has to compile them together.

    6. (bonus track) Europe - TocarThe Final Countdown

This is the only one on the list that I can actually confess to liking - because I find the above video too hilarious. Though I'll be surprised if you last longer than 30 seconds - because that's when the vocals come in. Which is a shame, because you'll miss the highlights - the random dude who walks onstage and checks the amp, and the other random fat dude who WALKS PAST THE CAMERA AT 1:45! Whenever I gig, THAT BAND playing THAT SONG literally serves as my direct inspiration. We'll never be that good.

Actually, the drummer's not that bad, you have to give them that.

And it may not be the original Europe version, which itself isn't any good, but that performance is far more entertaining.

    5. Nitro - Long Way From Home

Aah, Nitro, everyone's favourite Out. Fucking. Rageous. hair metal band. Jim Gilette's "six octaves and a sixth of the tone", glass-shattering voice is rivalled only by Michael Angelo Batio's four-neck quad guitar.

So why this and not any other Nitro song (all of which surely qualify)?

Power ballad. And accompanyingly cheesy video.

They're so inept at songwriting that they don't even sound like they're writing a power ballad because every other glam band at the time was; it's as if the record label knew that without one, the album would sell absolutely zero. But it still did.

    4. 4 Non Blondes - TocarWhat's Up?

Why are successful professional songwriters like Max Martin, Dr. Luke, Diane Warren, Linda Perry etc. what they are? Because they were too ugly, and sucked too hard in their respective solo careers to make it. Would they choose to write songs for brats like Avril Lavigne to sing?

Have you ever read one of those "Songwriting for Dummies" or "How to Write Lyrics" books written by "acclaimed" songwriters, like the woman who wrote the 102 Dalmatians theme with a chorus consisting solely of "diggity diggity dog"? That's right, creative geniuses dispensing invaluable advice like "you don't have to rhyme - Eye of the Tiger uses 'tiger' and 'rival' so it's commercially proven to be okay!" Well, before Linda Perry was one of those people, she must have gone through Songwriting 101, working through all the checklists in those books and shitting out one of the most contrived songs ever. This my accurate depiction of her "artistic" process".

    Maximize your appeal:
"What do the kids like these days?"
Linda flicks on MTV; it's 1992 and she watches the top ten video countdown.
"This grunge thing, eh? But I don't want to scare off the baby boomers with those heavy guitars, so let's strum some acoustic chords! And let's call the band 4 Non Blondes so we don't seem stereotypical!"

    Instrumentation:
She checks her How to Play Guitar book; the first chord listed is A major.
"TocarSmells Like Teen Spirit has a guitar solo in it... I like how it's just the vocal melody so you can sing along, even if you know not what it means. Too bad I can't really play guitar."
So she plays a non-guitar solo consisting mostly of As.
"I have to escalate the dynamics in the chorus like in Smells Like Teen Spirit too! I'll play a few A power chords on electric guitar, but we can't mix it too loud or we'll frighten the old folks."

Lyrical brainstorming (what does your target audience like?!!!):
"How do I make it appeal to both the old and the young?"
She opens her American history textbook to a chapter about old people and reads about some hippie guys at Woodstock. Something about being inspired, peace, smoking pot and caring about what's happening in the world. She thinks of a line for each theme.
Inspiration: "this great big hill of hope"
    Peace: "this brotherhood of man"
    Drugs: "get real high"
She couldn't think of a line for the last one herself, so she stole from Marvin Gaye, using "TocarWhat's Going On". Sadly, the record company made her change the song's title (a very unconventional technique increasing the risk factor - not including the song title in the lyrics!).

    Vocal melodies:
Rule number one - use notes that fit with the chord progression.
"Hmm, the chorus starts with an A major chord, so I'm not allowed to use any notes other than A, C# and E."
Rule number two - consider the singer's vocal range.
"I have a big vocal range! So let's make the line span an octave!"
Rule number three - when you're writing the hook at the start of the chorus, use something wordless, it's catchier.
"How about 'hey-uh, hey-uh, hey-uh hey!' And I'll yodel it because I can!"

Professional songwriters are the bane of my existence.

And I realize both the previous songs have been suggested by Idolator as amongst the worst songs ever, but I knew of them before then. I take no pride in having such bragging rights.

Also, Linda Perry has a very large mouth.

    3. Gloria Gaynor - TocarI Will Survive

Naff. Camp. Cheesy. Cringeworthy. Do you even like music described by those adjectives, yet alone songs that utterly live, breathe and embody them whilst pretentiously attempting to jump on the feminist bandwagon and make a statement of socially acceptable and musically inoffensive (i.e. punk is too loud) "defiance"?

How do you know the girl dancing onstage has a penis? She's dancing to I Will Survive.

Disco is a terrible genre overall, but if you have to make an exception, don't pick the shittiest song of the entire movement. Go listen to later-period The Jackson 5 or Off the Wall.

    2. Six Feet Under (featuring Ice-T) - One Bullet Left

Good death metal is good. Bad death metal generally isn't offensively terrible, it's just boring and sounds the same as all other death metal. This is bad, but it has something to distinguish it as truly bad: gangsta rap. And it combines the best of both - indistinguishable growling, repetitive shitty chromatic heavy riffs and gory lyrics with empty gangsta posturing!

Chris Barnes left Cannibal Corpse because he decided he didn't want to play only death metal that was fast. Struck with inspiration, he decided to play death metal that was slow. And they called the genre... "death 'n' roll"!

But a few years later, he'd run out of ideas. So he looked for inspiration through more unconventional takes on metal... like combining it with rap! Enter Ice-T, formerly of rap/metal hybrid Body Count, who did the whole "Cop Killer" anti-police controversy thing years after N.W.A's "Fuck Tha Police" - a true sign of originality.

I'm going to post the entire lyrics of this song, just because I feel like it. Jump forward to 1:27 on the video for Ice-T's brutal rapping.

    I'll kill all the haters
    They'll never stop their deaths
We'll bread and burn and murder
Each of you to the last
    Return to make it final
    One bullet to your head
I know it just won't happen
A world that's free from pain
So I'll just use my freedom
To fucking kill and maim them
    Reduce their heads with lead
    Not ever gonna stop us
Not 'til the last one drops off
Not 'til they die and rot up
    Not ever gonna stop
Not 'til the last one drops

One bullet left - one bullet left - one
One bullet left - one life to die - one
One bullet left - one bullet left - one

For some reason you motherfuckers think this is
    Some kind of motherfuckin game
You ain't gonna realize until I got some fucking
Steel pointed at your faggot-ass face and blow your
Motherfuckin dome off your goddamn shoulders
    You motherfuckin critic-ass bitch motherfuckers
Catch you comin out your motherfuckin house
    Bleed!

I put the gat to your face and head and blast
Blow your fuckin face off, rock you with the
Sawed-off, blow guts all over your bitch
Leave your stankin in a six foot ditch
Run up in your house with a tek out
Duct tape your spouse with a gun in her mouth
Smack your kids up you think I give a fuck
I'll call the fuckin pigs on myself
Barricade the black with the ATF
I don't give a fuck bitch I pray for death
Grab your little girl by the neck
    Bust her in the chest
And throw her on the lawn
Call CNN it's on, get this on TV
    The last one's for me
Aim with the pipe down dead in my head
    And squeeze
    Leave the whole wall red

One bullet left, one bullet left - one
One bullet left - one life to die for
One bullet left, one bullet left - one
One bullet left - one life to die for

    Always got one bullet left
One of fifty to their fucking chests

    1. Leonard Nimoy - The Ballad of Bilbo Baggins

Literally everything about this song is wrong. The actor known for portraying Spock on Star Trek having a singing career is wrong. His awkward baritone voice is wrong. Him appearing in the video with his Spock haircut is wrong. Him frolicking with multitudes of jailbait-age girls in the video is wrong. Their wearing of pointy elf ears is is wrong. Their wearing of "hobbits unite" badges is wrong. Their dancing like rabbits is wrong. Their bobbing up and down is wrong. Trivializing great books like The Hobbit is wrong. Using "He fought with goblins! He battled a troll!" in any non-polka metal song is wrong. The constant key changes - including one during the chorus that REVERTS BACK TO THE ORIGINAL KEY AFTER THREE SECONDS - is wrong. The vocal harmonies are wrong. EVERYTHING ABOUT THIS SONG IS WRONG. IT IS OFFENSIVE TO MUSIC.

And holy shit, I'd never seen the full version I just posted until today...

  • "Dibder" - Music From The Motion Picture

    Ago 12 2008, 11h55 por CvaldaVessalis

Though I have indulged in this iTunes shuffling fandango previously since my introduction to all things last.fm, and even submitted my very own rom-com soundtrack as a 70-minute playlist (which proved to be even more annoying than I realized, seeing as I was getting annoyed with good songs as opposed to Working Title/Hollywood standards or overplayed chart hits this time around). In any event, I decided that, if I were to try this soundtrack-shuffling exercise one more time, a little refinement in my shuffle technique needed to be put in order. Firstly, only five-star songs from my library would constitute this CD-long roster, so as to make sure that consistency wouldn't be compromised this time around. Secondly, I am keen to propose that life doesn't necessarily constitute a set list of key rites of passage (Wedding? Birth of child?? Waking up!?!), so, as per my present life experience and my own pre-supposed life trajectory, I have established new criteria for each soundtrack cue. Thirdly, given my last.fm friend Popicn's ridiculously appropriate playlist, I am guessing it's OK to cheat on this playlist just a little...? Forgive me, this is how much time I have to myself at work...!

Just for reference, the title refers to my karaoke pseudonym during the last three years of my young and carefree life wherein I was allowed to be a dirty little stop-out and be privy to all kinds of illicit goings-on without recrimination or condescension from loved ones and friends... or, to put too fine a point on it all, my university years! Those years where you didn't feel self-aware when chatting bullshit about international relations, half-baked semi-religious philosophies, the responsibilities that leading powers of the world have for more impoverished nations and the resulting exploitation on both sides of the argument or how pissed off you were that your favorite singer always gets voted off halfway through The X Factor... That lovely time when becoming a professional and "five year plans" were the least of your worries. Though some of the cues on this list were composed and released after my graduation, they still remind of one of the best times of my life. This is dedicated to Deborah, James, Jessie, Richard and Rob, my housemates on Brading Road for two years, and five people I really need to spend some time catching up with:
