March 21, 2009
The Zoo, Brisbane
The Gin Club, Hits, Danny Widdicombe
Floppy-haired local Danny Widdicombe croons "satisfy me" over and over like a mantra to the accompaniment of a drifting guitar arrangement. I'm in hearty agreement. His voice offers a rough-hewn country charm, but too often his finger-plucked tunes slide into frustrating aimlessness. Twanging excursions into the blues hold more verve, but the aggressive stomping of set-closer My Desire highlights the confusing patchwork of his offerings tonight.
"Hi. We're Hits. Not that we have any."
Hits are definitely the bastard stepchild of tonight's bill. Wedged between the alt-country stylings of The Gin Club and Danny Widdicombe, the punk-rock five-piece detonates with the percussive force of a psychotic child throwing the biggest tantrum you could imagine.
Decked out from the waist-up as a sailor captain…
Fev 23 2009, 10h35 por BlackCoffeeDuckThe Drones were on the T.V. this past weekend on RAGE, an ABC music show which has been going over 25 years here in Australia. What happens if you live somewhere else (why? but that is your problem not mine) RAGE asks an artist or band to pick their favorite video clips and they talked about songs and why they have picked them for this or that reason. The Drones were very funny, They picked Billy Bob Thornton song called Angelina which they haven't heard but said Brad Pitt should cover it, well maybe you had to be there. The show takes place on late Saturday night and now for an hour in the morning, It's the best TV show ever.
Gareth Liddiard was also on Aussie music quiz show Rockwiz a few weeks ago too. At the start of this show Gareth played Oh My then sitting down he was asked what was his first album he ever bought with his own money which he answered with Dire Straits' Brothers in Arms but later in the show a bit called Master-blaster which the guest is asked to pick a topic to be quizzed on. …

The Old Museum, Brisbane
December 13, 2008
The Gin Club, clinkerfield, The Aerial Maps, Texas Tea, Jacob S Harris
Built in 1891 to enable the city of Brisbane to host a world exposition, but named after it's decades-long stint as the city's museum, The Old Museum tonight plays host to The Gin Club's Christmas bash. The Ginners have assembled no less than four support slots, and an early start means I miss Jacob S Harris, who performed so well at the Globe just last month.
In fact, I only just catch the start of the Texas Tea set. The local duo are in fine fettle, even if the rarified concert hall atmosphere lends an irritating touch of reverb to their mellow country tune. Many of the tunes are drawn from Junkship, which is all to the good. I'm a little disappointed that they skip the dirge-like Ferry Song, but a remarkable rendition of the Ronny Shannon-penned, Aretha Franklin-performed Never Loved A Man more than makes up for it.
Nov 8 2008, 12h19 por BlackCoffeeDuckAfter my last epic Kim Salmon journal now I’m going to write about Fri 7 Nov – The Drones, Gin club. I saw them the night after Kim, it was great because it was like the next generation along in that style of Aussie independent music and Gareth Liddiard and Fiona Kitschin are from Perth too. So it was like a weekend of home town singers and bands coming home. Gareth and Kim played a lot of the same chord progressions and finger picking like you would on acoustic but using an electric guitar. The Gin Club was great but I don’t know why everybody was standing as far back as possible. You could hardly get in the door because everyone wanted to get away from the support band. But I would love to hear more of them.
Before The Drones started the first song some idiot shouted “Tear me a new asshole” and Gareth answered with “Yeh I need another one of them”. They pretty much played the entire new album in the same order as on the new album Havilah but without the last two songs which by the way are my favourites from it. …

My bits of the review of Sounds of Spring festival that I helped write for Fasterlouder. The whole piece can be found here.
The Butcher Birds quickly display just how well they’ve integrated new drummer Donovan with a more muscular attention-grabbing tone to their toffee-drone melodies. The real surprise, though, is Donovan abruptly stealing vocal duties from Stacey for a screamy number mid-set. The contrast is stark – and it works. Perhaps it’s a sign of things to come?
“This song is called It’s Getting Worse ” indie-folkster Laura Imbruglia tells the milling crowd. “It’s not a reflection on the day, it’s just a song.” One hopes that after the hour-long gates delay debacle that she’s right. She backs her optimism with a fine set of gentle acoustic numbers – highlighted by the off-the-wall lyrical acid trip that is Magical Washing Machine – that hold their own against the raucous rock drifting…

where do i start. i was so excited for this gig and i wasn't quite sure why. i've heard some of her stuff, i saw her sing that Talking Heads cover of Phsyco Killer and absolutely loved it and saw a glimpse of her on the ARIA's when i was flicking through. I basically knew "Words", and that i had been wanting to see her since i first moved to brisbane this time last year.
again, at the tivoli, i have decided i really like it here, a really nice venue.
we missed the first act, but arrived in time to catch the second support act Dead Letter Chorus.
At first I didn't think i liked the music that much. But with the exception or one or two songs they played i actually really liked them. i would love to buy their cd.
swapping between both male and female vocals, makes a very nice contrast, as the bands almost feels a tad country-esq, then female singer (sorry don't know names) sings with the sweetest voice.
