  • My Ausmusic Month 100 greatest Aussie songs by Me + Gareth Liddiard's top 5 tracks

    Nov 24 2009, 14h36 por BlackCoffeeDuck

November is almost over so I better do this or I'll never do it. Here in Australia on Triple J radio is Ausmusic month and ABCTV show Rage has joined in this year too. In Jmag The Drones won the top spot in their "Greatest Aussie Song Ever" Top 30 as voted by Aussie muso's. Winning with TocarShark Fin Blues, which got the most votes and so should they, check it all out here: http://blogs.abc.net.au/triplej/2009/10/greatest-aussie-songs-ever.html

Plus the other night The Drones won two A.I.R. Awards for "Independent Artist Of The Year" and "Best Independent Album" for Havilah and so should they too, check it out here: http://www.airawards.com.au/ (also they should win every A.R.I.A. award at the end of this week but will miss out more than likely because well, it's the crappy arias). Anyway I'm going to re-post Gareth Liddiard from The Drones top five votes for Jmag's greatest Aussie songs, which are:
    AC/DC - Jailbreak
    Dirty Three - Hope
Kim Salmon - Obvious Is Obvious
    Laughing Clowns - Collapse Board
    X - Revolution
Cool, eh? Plus now triple J’s "Like A Version Vol. 5" album is coming out at the end of this month with The Drones doing Suicide is Painless cover on it, yipee!

Now I was going to do a top 30 tracks too but it got bigger and bigger until it has turned into 100 tracks. It is my choices so most likely no one will agree with me (You could make your own too). These tracks are just my all-time favorite tracks from Aussie bands that I love and could listen to them forever. Also I have somehow numbered them too, which was so hard but I'll post it now because it's round about right (maybe tracks could go up or down in time) But to me these are the greatest Aussie songs ever. OK, that is it. I think I've picked a bit of everything but maybe more obscure than your normal top 100 Aussie chart. If you don't know something which sounds good to you please let me know and I'll do my best in letting you know where or how you can find it. I was going to write a line or two on each song but it really would take forever to do that so it's just a big long list again. There was reasons why for all of them and where they ended up in the chart but you can tell what I like and what I don't and a lot of bands or artists have been left out but I don't like them as much as the songs above. These I would listen to forever and if I could take over Triple J this is what I would play for you. What do you think???

  • EasyFever: A Tribute To The Easybeats & Stevie Wright

    Out 28 2008, 16h17 por musicdish

Albert Music will celebrate the extraordinary musical legacy of The Easybeats, by releasing EasyFever: A Tribute to the Easybeats & Stevie Wright, a superb 2CD album in celebration of this ground-breaking group.

The band – Harry Vanda, George Young, Stevie Wright, Dick Diamonde and Gordon “Snowy” Fleet – formed in Sydney in 1964 and almost immediately ‘Easy Fever’ took Australia by storm and was soon to captivate audiences overseas. Their meteoric rise to stardom was due to releasing hit single after hit single, including classics such as Friday On My Mind, Wedding Ring, She’s So Fine and Good Times. Their success saw them consistently get mobbed at airports, chased down streets and tour internationally with the Rolling Stones.

    MP3: "St. Louis" by Grinspoon
    http://www.bfmdigital.com/mi2n/grinspoon.mp3

A year in the making, EasyFever sees the ‘who’s who’ of contemporary Australian music come together to pay tribute to our most popular and successful band of the 60’s, and pay homage to the band who carved the stone in the Australian musical landscape. From Jimmy Barnes to Ben Lee, from The Veronicas to Grinspoon, The Living End to Old Man River, these artists have all recorded their unique interpretation of these enduring songs from The Easybeats and Stevie Wright’s majestic musical career. As well as this disc of today’s hottest local bands tipping their hats to The Easybeats, there is also a second disc of all the original tracks.

EasyFever also features a previously unreleased Stevie Wright song, Motherfigure… with a twist. Albert Music unearthed from their vaults a never before heard track, written by Vanda & Young, initially slated to be the first single from Stevie’s never-released third solo album in the late 70’s. Now 30 years later, it will see the light of day as an amazing duet with rock legend Jimmy Barnes.

The Easybeats drifted apart in 1969, however it was by no means the end of their musical careers – with Vanda and Young returning to Australia in 1973 to become house producers for the new Albert Productions record label. They wrote for and/or produced many chart topping acts including Stevie Wright, Rose Tattoo and the Angels. They also wrote and produced several major hits for John Paul Young, including Love Is In The Air, not to mention producing the first 6 albums for AC/DC.

And the accolades kept coming. In 1998 Australia Post issued a She’s So Fine stamp, celebrating the early years of Australian Rock n Roll. In 2005 Friday On My Mind was voted by APRA as the most important Australian song written in the past 75 years. Vanda and Young are also the only songwriting team inducted into the Australian ARIA Hall of Fame.

And now in 2008, Australia’s hottest and most respected artists pay tribute to The Easybeats and Stevie Wright, with electrifying interpretations of their timeless songs. Be sure to catch EasyFever!

Gary Moore / TocarFriday on My Mind / Wild Frontier (6) / Mar 1987

Yeah, I know it's a cover, originally done by The Easybeats in 1966, but this is the version I like best. And it might make better sense on a Monday rather than a Friday, but it's been in my head today, so there it is!

Hopefully no offense to my fellow members Down Under for my preferring a version done by an Irishman!

    British India

ben preece CHATS WITH MATT O’GORMAN, DRUMMER FOR MELBOURNE ROCK OUTFIT BRITISH INDIA, ABOUT THEIR NEW ALBUM Thieves, ITS SPEEDY DELIVERY AND GROWING UP.

British India’s incredible rise from the underbelly of melbourne’s healthy independent scene to the top of the Australian indie pile has taken a mere 12 months. July last year saw the release of their acclaimed debut album Guillotine and it’s been nothing but an endless stream of Triple J airplay, sold out shows and festival dates nationwide. Now comes Thieves, the second album released one year, almost exactly to the date.

“We wouldn’t have done it so quickly if we weren’t so confident with the songs,” explains O’Gorman. “Between the recording and the release of Guillotine, we had a bit of time spare. We used that time to do a lot of writing and of course, a lot of touring. We’d pretty much have a gig each weekend so during the week we’d get together. It was something we always want to do; release a second album close to the first.”

Again produced by Easybeats legend harry vanda and glenn goldsmith, Thieves continues on from where Guillotine left off, celebrating the garage pop that has so far defined the band while exuding their obvious growth.

“We couldn’t be happier with it,” claims O’Gorman. “I think the band has grown so much since Guillotine. It makes a difference going into the studio after you’ve been playing a lot, also I think the band had more of an idea of what we wanted to get from it soundwise. When you go into a studio for the first time, you’re like a rabbit in the headlights. We were just more confident going in this time.”

With the album hitting shelves last weekend and it’s brooding, foot stomping first single ‘I Said I’m Sorry’ currently getting much radio love, it’s already clear that Thieves is a proper step up for British India and the budding lyrical genius of declan melia.

“I think lyrically it’s grown a lot,” explains O’Gorman. “Declan hasn’t changed his formula much, I just think they’ve grown. The same themes are there like Guillotine, which are growing up and what you experience being this age, 22, but they’re just much stronger. Also, it feels more like an album. Guillotine felt more like a collection of songs because you’ve got your whole life to write your first album. We wrote these songs in that one year period so they seem to go really well together.”

In year brimming with highlights, one classic moment that most would kill to see stands out to O’Gorman.

“During the big day out Tour, we were in Adelaide,” he enthuses. “We had played and the other boys were having an afternoon nap and I went down to the foyer and there was Bjork, The Arcade Fire, Battles and Rage Against the Machine all huddled around this big grand piano. They were singing ABBAsongs and I remember sitting down by the bar and filmed a bit of it on the camera. I should put it on YouTube.”

  • I've Been Music Shopping Like Cray-zee.

After spending a year discovering virtually zero new artists (and spending a ridiculous amount of time discovering new films and film makers), I'm back into music with full-force. So of course I've been anxious to get out and buy some new stuff... and by new I mean new and used copies of rather old music. So N-E-Wayz, here's what I've picked up over the past week:

    Compact Disc:

    John Cale - Fear (1974)
    The Children - Rebirth (1968)
The Creation - We Are Paintermen (1967)
    The Deviants - Ptooff! (1967)
The Dukes of Stratosphear - Chips From The Chocolate Fireball (1987)
Bob Dylan - Bringing It All Back Home (1965)
The Easybeats - Friday on My Mind (1967)
The Easybeats - Falling off the Edge of The World (1968)
Faine Jade - Introspection: A Faine Jade Recital (1968)
The Glitterhouse - The Almost Complete Recordings (1966 - 1974)
    Gong - Camembert Electrique (1971)
    Gong - Flying Teapot (1973)
    Gong - Angel's Egg (1973)
    H.P. Lovecraft - H.P. Lovecraft (1967)
    H.P. Lovecraft - H.P. Lovecraft II (1968)
The Incredible String Band - The 5000 Spirits or the Layers of the Onion (1967)
The Kinks - Face To Face (1966)
    The Litter - Distortions (1967)
    The Litter - $100 Fine (1968)
The Moon - Without Earth (1968)
The Moon - The Moon (1969)
Pink Floyd - The Piper at the Gates of Dawn (1967) Three Disc Edition
Small Faces - Small Faces (1966)
The Soft Machine - The Soft Machine (1968)
    Sparks - Propaganda (1974)
Ten Years After - Ten Years After (1967)

    Vinyl:

    Calliope - Steamed (1968)
Cold Blood - Cold Blood (1969)
    Cream - Goodbye (1969)
The Cryan' Shames - A Scratch in the Sky (1967)
Mort Garson - Signs of the Zodiac: Taurus (1969)
    H.P. Lovecraft - H.P. Lovecraft II (1968)
    Iron Butterfly - Ball (1969)
Jefferson Airplane - Crown of Creation (1968)
The Monkees - The Birds, The Bees, & The Monkees (1968)
The Rolling Stones - Between The Buttons (1967) MONO Version!
The Rolling Stones - Flowers (1967)

That's a lot of stuff to listen to--at least the vinyl was cheap. Now I need to stop myself from buying anything else until after Christmas. :D
