Amanda Palmer. Union Chapel, London. September 11-12 2009

In june I read that Amanda Palmer was playing in London, I asked my girlfriend half as a joke if we should go... she said yes and 20-30 minutes we had booked the flight, hotell and concert tickets. A month later she added an extra concert, so we bought tickets to that one too!

We drove down to Gothenburg and at the airport we found out that the plane had been delayed... Fuck! We knew we didn't have too much time to check into our hotell and get to Union Chapel in time for the first concert. We were over an hour late to London, grabbed a cab who took us to our hotell, told him to wait while we checked in. We threw our stuff into the room grabbed a wine bottle and ran back to the cab who took us to Union Chapel. We ran to the doors where they told us Amanda just had started. Totally stressed out we sat down in the beautiful church while Amanda played Missed Me. We missed the first song...



It took a while to calm down to really enjoy the show after all that stress. She continued with Astronaut and Blake Says... After a few songs she threw away her setlist and started taking requests instead. I loved hearing Sex Changes, Mandy Goes to Med School and Ampersand but after Amanda playing a classical piece came one of the highlights of the night, a very powerful version of Strength Through Music... followed by Runs in the Family, I thought it was impossible to sing that song live with all those words... :)

It was followed by a "hymn" that Neil Gaiman had taught her, the hymn was actually Jump by Derek & Clive (comedian Dudley Moore). It was followed by the funny I Google You with lyrics by Gaiman.



Polly Scattergood who had opened the show showed up on the balcony over the stage for a wonderful version of Puff The Magic Dragon and Delilah, one of my favorite songs by The Dresden Dolls. Oasis ended the set with Polly and the rest of her band as guests.



Encores started with a wonderful version of Makin' whoopie with Amanda on the balcony playing ukulele, followed by Point of it All and going out with a bang with Half Jack.



After the show we got to meet and shake hands with both Amanda and Neil. It was weird meeting Neil Gaiman, I have been a huge fan of his books/comics ever since I first read Sandman 15-20 years ago and I every book he has written. They both signed and drew in my Who Killed Amanda Palmer book. :)



A very good and spontaneous show but I must say that it didn't really meet my huge expectations. Checking Amandas twitter she thought she fucked up the whole show by forgetting lyrics and stuff.

While I thought the friday show was good the saturday show was amazing. More than half the songs had been switched from last night, two Ask Amanda sessions, art auction, new song, Neil Gaiman singing... We got there in time and got to see Amanda play Girl Anachronism on a bicycle piano outdoors for us standing in line... We got great seats a few rows behind Neil Gaiman. Polly Scattergood opened but I didn't like her music very much.



Amanda opened with a wonderful accapella performance of the Irish folk song The Wind That Shakes the Barley. The next new song was the rarity Bank of Boston Beauty Queen before Beth Hommel entered the stage for the first session of "Ask Amanda". A very fun part of the show that I missed from yesterdays show...



The show continued with surprises... We got the worlds first vocal performance from Neil Gaiman! hehe... He sang Jump, "the hymn". Very funny. She played a great version of the Jason Webley song Icarus and an all new song, The Bed Song.



After auctioning out a painting that an artist had been painting onstage both nights the encores started. We got another surprise with a heartbreaking accapella version of Tori Amos' Me and a Gun that gave goosebumps before ending with The Point of It All.



This show was so much more than an usual concert. It was an unique experience, more like a night hanging out and having fun with Amanda. Amazing.
