  • Amazing Restored Venue Opens Up To Start Social D's 30 Year Anniversary Tour

    Fev 7 2009, 22h52 por dvoodoo

The beautifully restored interior of Oakland's Fox Theater was the unlikely venue for a an old Orange County punk band to celebrate their 30th year in the game.

Fri 6 Feb – Social D @ Grand Opening Night of Oakland's Renovated Historic Venue

The ornate Deco and Moorish decor of the Fox added immensely to the affair, and the sold out crowd eagerly anticipated Mike Ness and his band's arrival onstage. A couple opening acts were granted permission to set up in front of the Social D gear, but were not the most memorable of groups, neither likely to upstage the headliners.

The Devil Makes Three played an acoustic sort of hillbilly twang that seemed somewhat lost in the cavernous retro magnificence of the venue. Earlier a rote pop punk band incongruently called The Black Tibetans played their set to the early arrivals, some of whom paid attention, and the band, maybe in their best moments sounded like they were riffing off of mid 90's period Social Distortion outtakes.

Eventually the lines at the many bars throughout the building and it's multi-tiered levels cleared, as it became apparent the main event was upon us. The mighty Social D, slowly lumbered onto the stage. The excitement was palpable, and the floor filled up fast, while those trapped in the upper mezzanine craned their necks to see better...

Social Distortion blasted through a good hour plus set featuring plenty of faves from the band's long career. While Mike Ness is now the only original member, drummer Charlie Quintana has a touring pedigree including The Plugz ( as well as Bon Jovi and Cracker )and now been in the group for a decade. The slow recording pace of Social Distortion means that Quintana has only played on one full album, 2004's Sex, Love and Rock 'n' Roll.

Midway through the set, Mike commented to the crowd "Thanks for packing this place out you mutha f-ckers, becoming the first paying customers this place has seen in 43 years"

  • Richard Thompson at The Ark

    Jul 12 2008, 16h18 por musica23

Mon 7 Jul – Richard Thompson

I honestly don't know if there is such a thing as a "bad" Richard Thompson show, so my thoughts on this particular appearance may be irrelevant to his fans. But I'm going to at least make a record of it for myself. Read on if you like...

We arrived in Ann Arbor and located the venue at about 3:30PM. There was no line at The Ark yet (general admission seating), so we had a bite to eat at a nearby sidewalk eatery and kept an eye out for RT's fans to appear. At approximately 4PM, we spotted Fan #1 (Will, who turned out to be an interesting and knowledgeable guy) so we sped up our meal so we could get in line.

The management let us in about 3 hours later and we managed to get 2nd row seats at this cool but tiny club (it seats only 400). The opening act was called The Devil Makes Three. They were very enjoyable (2 guys on acoustic/electric guitars, one of 'em with an excellent voice, and a gal on upright bass), playing for nearly 45 minutes. They weren't terribly unique but were far better than many bands in their genre enjoying huge success. I'd give 'em a strong B. (Extra points for having to be their own roadies! They swiftly moved their amps and such themselves to clear a path for the main attraction...make that a B+!)

Not long after, Richard hit the small stage and didn't stop for 2 hours (unless you count encores as a "stop"). I had seen him only once before nearly 20 years ago and was beyond impressed. This show was equally extraordinary despite the progression in age (for both of us, obviously). In fact, it's possible that his voice has actually gotten better over time. His guitar playing (acoustic/electric all night long...alone...no band necessary...) is nothing short of superb. It's a real shame that more folks aren't aware of him (especially here in the USA). He doesn't appear to mind, though, as he put his heart, soul, infamous sarcastic wit and pure talent into this show (as I suspect he does at every one of his gigs).

I will now attempt to provide a setlist for the evening. As my memory is not what it once was, I honestly can't remember even the first song he did. (I guess I was already under his spell...) I do remember most of his tunes for the night, but not necessarily in order! Included in my list are songs from his 2 encores. Here goes...

Toward the beginning (or even at the beginning...not sure...), he did an oldie from his classic with ex-wife Linda, Shoot Out the Lights..."Walking On a Wire." He later did the title tune as well. Other songs included "Down Where The Drunkards Roll," "Crawl Back (Under My Stone)" (with audience participation), "1952 Vincent Black Lightning," "Dad's Gonna Kill Me," "I Want To See The Bright Lights Tonight," "Hots For the Smarts" (never recorded thus far), "Cooksferry Queen," "Keep Your Distance," "She Twists The Knife Again," "The Sunset Song" (one of 3 songs from his latest CD, Sweet Warrior), "I Feel So Good," "Persuasion" (a shouted out request), a most beautiful version of former bandmate (Fairport Convention), the late Sandy Denny's "Who Knows Where The Time Goes?," "Valerie"...and I'm wondering what I'm forgetting..."Beeswing" was his final song (unless I'm mistaken)...

A great time was had by all. That's what I know for sure! Not only is Thompson an unparalleled writer/guitarist/singer...he is an exceptionally personable and funny guy! His exchanges with the audience were quick and witty as usual and his performance overall was spellbinding. How he manages to get such sound from just one instrument (not counting his unique and powerful voice) is a mystery. He was plugged directly into the PA system, and I got a look at his pedalboard (a Line 6 DL4 Delay, a Fulltone Deja Vibe, and a Voodoo Labs Pedal Power for you techies out there...!). I can tell you he used those few effects very sparingly, even asking the soundboard guys to turn down the effects once.

To top things off, Richard came out and did a Meet 'n' Greet with no hesitation. He appeared approximately 15 minutes after his show ended to sign, chat and meet with his fans (myself being one of the lucky ones who stayed). I presented him with a picture of us together from the other 20-year-ago show to sign and tried to convince him that he remembered me. I also had a stack of CD covers and he proceeded to sign almost all of 'em before putting a leash on me. There were others in line, after all, and he does have a life (my words, not his!).

In short, if you have any interest whatsoever in Richard Thompson and/or his music, do yourself a favor and catch him LIVE! His recorded catalog is impressive as it is, but his live show is not to be missed. In case you hadn't guessed, I'm giving this performance a very solid A+!

  • Odds and sods

    Jan 22 2008, 17h40 por soundtrekkie

I am quite literally bouncing and clapping on the inside (as much as possible--sometimes it leaks out!) about the shows I will be seeing next week.

    Howard Jones

    Tim Finn

The only way that this week could be more complete is if Nik Kershaw and Tony Banks decided to come to Portland and play shows on the dates in between. *sigh* A girl can dream.

I've picked up my music buying habit and managed to get a ton of Howard Jones and Split Enz on vinyl in preparation. How these albums made it to my little corner, I don't know. But I did notice something odd the other day: the Split Enz US fan club circa 1970 was in Eugene, Oregon. What are the odds of that? The Earl and I plan to send something to the P.O. Box and see if it's still in business.

    Other purchases include:

    - Radiohead's In Rainbows, which I am thoroughly enjoying now that it sounds better.
    - Brad Mehldau's Largo, which I didn't know about and picked up based on Jon Brion's contributions.
    - A reordered copy of Meaningless that I have missed so badly.
    - The first Weepies album, Happiness should be gracing my mailbox soon. Can't wait for the next one!
    - ELP's Pictures at an Exhibition. I've always had a weakness for this Mussorgsky piece so I grabbed it. The first ELP album I can stand!
    - Teddy Thompson's Separate Ways, another "couldn't find" for a while. Wish he didn't have his dad playing guitar on a few tracks -- it's distracting for us RT fans.
    - The Devil Makes Three debut. I missed them on my birthday but was told it was a great show. :(

In other news, the music appreciation bug has spread to my little town. I hosted four of us (though there were quite a few interested) for the first meeting and we had such diverse childhood songs as The Beatles' Hey Bulldog, It's a Hard-Knock Life from Annie, Chuck Mangione's TocarFeels So Good, and Willie Nelson on TocarCity Of New Orleans. Next week: break-up songs.

Also....if anyone hasn't heard the Legion of Rock Stars or The Most Wanted/Unwanted Music, get thee hence!
