Obviously, a significant part of American people has been brainwashed over the decades to believe in the "communist danger" which threatens to overtake the country from inside. Thus, Obama's political will to generate a public-owned health-care system is viewed as an attempt to literally hand the U.S.A down to socialism. The truth, however, is that ONLY private health-insurance companies benefit from a privatised health system. Of course, the media, being controlled by the upper bourgeoisie (which owns the greatest part of the means of production), propagate the "red alert" story (even now, 20 years after the fall of the Soviet Union) so that the interests of the socioeconomic elite to be seen by the public at large as coinciding with the interests of the society as a whole, regardless of the existence of different classes and, thus, colliding interests. You listen to "hippie" music today but, unlike hippies, you are, unconciously perhaps, victimised by the system's propaganda.

One thing the hippies had good was the music, but I don't agree with some of their views that a few of them had such as "Free Love", polygamy (same thing as last one really), premarital sex, etc. They weren't bad people though.

Although I like this song as much as everyone, I asked to know why some people hold the notion that hippie culture sucks. And what I get is the accusation that I am showing off when I clearly included myself in the description below. You may not have noticed, but I was trying to defend both hippies and the Byrds' song. Some reject hippie ideals based on ridiculous arguments such as "they don't wash" and the rest. I may have used an accusatory tone but beneath it lies just the desire to generate an interesting discussion.I agree that one need not be a hippie to enjoy hippie music. But, if one feels that hippies suck, one must be able to justify their opinion. Faith in God is an entirely personal matter, I wouldn't want to interfere with anyone's religious convictions. However, I agree with the marxist critique of religion and the left-wing notion that organised religion is the problen not the solution.

You need not be a hippie as you put it to enjoy the music of my youth. I think you feel the need to put others down because you yourself are just someone who doesn't really feel like someone inside unless he can bring others down to his level with his "let me blow you away with my big words" post. It's just a good song but maybe the real reason you don't like it is because it did come from the Bible. Are you one of those liberals who would just as soon remove God out of everything just because you think He didn't answer one of your childhood prayers so therefore He just does not exist; is that you? Well get over it and get over yourself. Just enjoy the music and if you feel that you must criticize someone or something; how about goingn to the White House blog site and blasting the socialist policies of the regeime in power and the undocumented worker who is weilding that power. Good day.

Why do hippies suck? You 've got to justify your opinion. Perhaps your conservative, bourgeoisie poisoned minds are incapable of conceiving the idea of personal freedom and community sharing which was central to hippie culture. Or you are subconsciously jealous for not being able to live in the culturally and politically significant decade of the 1960s. Instead you are stacked in front of a computer screen alone all day, listening to music alone and making comments left and right (myself included).

Hippies were peace- loving people who just wanted to be able to enjoy life. This song, like many from the era, came straight out of the Bible. Ecclesiastes - look it up. Good memories, good song. Timeless.
